Specifically, staying at ADLER Spa Resort DOLOMITI, tucked away in the Dolomites in Ortisei, will guarantee an amazing spa experience coupled with adventure and charm.

From the moment we arrived, we felt like the entire environment was designed to melt our worries away.

Every second of every day was about wellness, rejuvenation, and soaking in the sheer beauty of the Dolomites.

This wasn’t just a vacation; it was an experience we’ll be dreaming about until we return.

A Room with a View

Our room at ADLER was everything we could have hoped for—spacious, cozy, and incredibly comfortable.

The natural wood paneling and elegant alpine decor created a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it the perfect retreat after a day of exploring.

But the best part?

The breathtaking view from our balcony.

Every morning, we woke up to a stunning panorama of the Dolomites, with the sun casting a golden glow over the peaks.

It felt like waking up in a postcard.

To top it off, when we arrived, we were greeted with a chilled bottle of champagne and a beautiful fruit spread waiting for us. It was such a thoughtful touch that made our stay feel extra special from the very first moment.

A Spa Experience Like No Other

ADLER Spa Resort DOLOMITI is truly a paradise for anyone who loves to be pampered (raising my hand right now!).

The spa is divided into family-friendly and adult-only areas, so whether you’re visiting with kids or seeking a quiet retreat, you’ll find your perfect space.

One of the absolute highlights of our stay was the private spa experience for two.

This was next-level relaxation. We had our own little private sanctuary that felt like stepping into another world.

It started with time in the sauna together, followed by a rinse, and then one of us would nap on the comfiest bed ever while the other got a massage.

Then we switched, and then we switched again for a body scrub. Finally, to top it all off, there were two tubs waiting for us, filled up with warm water, where we soaked and sipped on champagne.

It was one of the most romantic and rejuvenating experiences we’ve ever had.

Another must-try is the adults-only spa area. We created our own little sauna ritual that we did every morning and highly recommend!

We moved from the steam sauna to the dry sauna, then braved the cold plunge before finishing in the jacuzzi.

It was an invigorating cycle that left us feeling completely refreshed.

The resort also offers a Himalayan salt sauna, a hay sauna (it smells amazing), and a salt grotto where we could float while listening to peaceful underwater music.

If you’re a fan of hydrotherapy, their AGUANA Water World is the place to be.

With both indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpools, and panoramic mountain views, we easily lost track of time just floating and taking it all in.

The Perfect Base for Exploring Ortisei

While we could have easily spent every moment in the spa, we did take time to explore Ortisei.

This charming mountain town is known for its stunning scenery, incredible hiking trails, and rich woodcarving tradition.

We hiked on trails within walking distance of the resort and discovered lifts all around town that make skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer super accessible.

Unfortunately, since we visited during the off-season, they weren’t running—but we’re already planning to return, alternating between winter and summer each year.

Yes, I said each year.

Sometimes, you stumble on a place that is worth endlessly repeating, and ADLER DOLOMITI and Ortisei fit the bill.

Hiking and Outdoor Adventures

Ortisei is a hiker’s paradise. In the summer months, the trails around town offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Dolomites.

There are scenic paths leading to places like Seceda, Alpe di Siusi, and Resciesa. The well-maintained trails vary in difficulty, making it easy for both casual walkers and experienced trekkers to find something we’d love.

For those looking to take their adventure up a notch, there are guided alpine excursions available, including sunrise hikes, via ferrata climbs, and even paragliding for the truly adventurous.

And if you’re visiting in winter? This region transforms into a skiing wonderland with some of the best slopes in the world.

The Art of Woodcarving

Ortisei is also famous for its woodcarving heritage.

This tradition dates back centuries, and we could still find family-run workshops creating intricate sculptures, figurines, and religious art.

We wandered through several local shops, admiring the craftsmanship and even bringing home a few small handcrafted pieces as a keepsake to add to our nativity every Christmas.

Dining at ADLER: A 5-Star Culinary Experience

One of the best things about staying at ADLER is that breakfast and dinner are included in our nightly rate—and let us tell you, the food is on another level.

While there are great restaurants around town, the hotel’s restaurant is a five-star dining experience. Each meal felt more like an event than just eating.

Breakfast was a dream, with an incredible spread of fresh pastries, local cheeses, fruit, and made-to-order eggs. And dinner? Absolutely unforgettable.

We enjoyed gourmet multi-course meals that were both delicious and nourishing, making us feel like we were indulging while still embracing the overall wellness theme of the resort.

We liked to dress up a bit for dinner, though it’s not required—just another touch that made the experience feel extra special.

Winter Magic: Skiing in the Dolomites

Though we visited in the warmer months, we’re already planning a winter trip to experience Ortisei’s ski scene.

The town is part of the Dolomiti Superski area, which connects over 1,200 km of slopes across 12 ski regions. That means endless runs, breathtaking snow-covered landscapes, and some of the best après-ski relaxation we could ask for.

What makes skiing here extra special is the seamless blend of sport and wellness.

Imagine spending the day gliding down perfect powder, then returning to ADLER to soak in the heated pools and unwind in the sauna. It’s the perfect balance of adventure and self-care, and one we plan to take advantage of ASAP!

The Ultimate Mountain Escape

Aside from the spa and dining, everything about ADLER is designed for comfort and relaxation.

The resort itself is set within a 9,000 m² park, blending nature and luxury seamlessly. The rooms are spacious, cozy, and beautifully designed with natural wood paneling and panoramic mountain views.

One of our favorite memories? Just sitting and staring at the mountains from our balcony, from the jacuzzis, from the sunning area—anywhere, really.

The Dolomites have a way of making you feel small in the best way possible, like you’re part of something truly majestic. We still dream about those views and honestly wish we could live there.

As if there weren’t enough white-sand Caribbean beaches to jet off to, those looking for their next paradisal vacation now have another option.

We all know the Caribbean is speckled with islands, making for unforgettable getaways amongst some of the world’s top beaches, some more popular than others.

As such, some of the most spacious untouched beaches are a trek to reach, even by cruise if that’s more your jam.

But American Airlines is making one such place easier to reach by offering Americans a pathway to one stunning island with new resorts, sugary white sand, and crystal-clear waters for the first time ever.

South Caicos: The Caribbean’s Budding Hotspot This Spring

If you think you know Turks and Caicos, think again!

Yes, we all know Turks and Caicos is in an exclusive club of picture-perfect destinations that has probably flashed before your eyes on your screensaver numerous times.

But vacationers often hit up the same beaches over and over again or find themselves in a tizzy trying to see all the sites in a tight squeeze so they can make it back to the cruise port on time.

Most travelers who visit Turks and Caicos find themselves on the island of Providenciales (a.k.a. “Provo”), home to the island’s main airport and stunning beaches like Grace Bay Beach as well as numerous resorts lining the vibrant coast.

But now visitors have a new entry point — South Caicos. This is a separate island set to become the new “it” destination of Turks and Caicos with American Airlines leading the charge.

While it’s true other Caribbean islands such as Jamaica and The Bahamas are more popular, beach crowds can be a nuisance anywhere, including right here in Provo.

In fact, in what could formally be described as one of the Caribbean’s crowd-free getaways, more travelers are now in on the secret, resulting in places like Provo skyrocketing in popularity recently.

On the flip side, South Caicos offers a wonderfully secluded experience with heaps of white sand, immaculately pristine waters, and a new name-brand resort, adding to an already impressive portfolio of lavish stays that we’ll get to in a moment.

Historic New Flight To South Caicos

On a day where many travelers are up in arms over Southwest putting the kibosh on their free-bag policy, kudos to American for taking chances on new destinations in 2025.

Adding South Caicos to their list of new flights, travelers can begin flying here as soon as March 15th, the date of the initial launch.

According to the Caribbean Journal, after unexpected delays, the new service is set for twice-weekly service on Wednesdays and Saturdays after kicking off this weekend.

Flights will depart from Miami (MIA) and land in South Caicos (XSC), joining only InterCaribbean Airways at this tiny airport.

Tickets are on sale online through February 4, 2026. Clearly, Americans believe this route will be a big success if you book almost a year in advance.

New Marriott Resort Now Open

Those who haven’t heard of South Caicos won’t need to worry about finding a nice place to rest their head at night, as there are already luxe resorts awaiting them.

The newest of the bunch is Salterra, a Luxury Collection Resort & Spa, Turks & Caicos (a Marriott brand) — and they’re booking up quick!

This highly anticipated resort is in their soft opening phase and taking reservations. I searched random dates throughout spring and found you will need to fork over a hefty amount to stay here as I rarely found rates below $1,000 per night.

As mentioned, there are other resorts on the island as well. While not as new, they’re still luxurious, including the 5-star Ambergris Cay Private Island Resort — truly a bucket-list destination, but again, you’ll need to count your pennies.

The other resorts are 4-star Sailrock South Caicos and 3-star South Caicos Ocean & Beach Resort.

New Travel Advisory Issued For Turks And Caicos

You may have seen a new travel advisory was issued for Turks and Caicos by the U.S. State Department.

It was widely publicized due to being pretty surprising as this paradise island is largely deemed safe, overall.

Most travel advisories urge travelers to be aware of their surroundings as crime can happen anywhere, but in this case, despite mentioning most crime occurs in Provo, the concern is actually in travelers’ hands.

The U.S. State Department is warning travelers to double-check their bags as carrying firearms, or any ammunition is illegal and a surefire way to wind up on Locked Up Abroad in Turks and Caicos, facing stiff penalties of up to 12 years in prison.

Winding navigable canals, picturesque fondamenti lined with pastel-hue buildings, and impossibly narrow alleys that lead to hidden piazzas with ornate fountains… there’s many a reason why you should visit the floating city of Venice.

At the same time, there are many why you should avoid it altogether:

Think of the jaw-dropping prices, with hotels in the historic center averaging $251 a night, or the overcrowding––and by that, we mean you simply can’t walk around the historic center without brushing shoulders with strangers.

That’s without factoring in the blatant anti-tourism policies, from the restriction of short-term rentals, to the introduction of a new ticketing system for day trippers.

Fortunately for crowd-wary, budget-conscious travelers, there’s a lesser-known Venice dupe all the way out west in Portugal, also traversed by a grand canal and famous for its richly-decorated gondolas:

Did You Know There Even Is A Portuguese Venice?

Aveiro boasts a high concentration of Art Nouveau architecture, skinny edifices draped in colorful tiles, and magnificent Baroque churches, but then again, this could be used to describe any other Portuguese city.

Its distinctive feature is the fact that it’s built on a lagoon, connected to the Atlantic Ocean by means of passing waterways, and it’s essentially born out of seaweed harvesting:

As the settlement grew over the centuries, and Aveiro’s exports grew bigger, a number of water-filled passageways were constructed to provide workers with easier access, from their place of residence to the harvesting hotspots.

These manmade canals are precisely why Aveiro is known as the ‘Portuguese Venice‘.

How Do Aveiro And Venice Compare?

Now, we won’t lie to you and tell you that’s a perfect comparison: there’s truly no other city like Venice in the world, built on a sheltered lagoon over oak-pile reinforced swamp isles and absent of streets and wheeled traffic.

Aveiro has navigable canals, but traffic runs alongside them, and unlike Venice, which has too many of those to count, its Portuguese equivalent has three main waterways.

Though they are not as numerous, but one could argue they’re equally scenic, especially with the colorful barcos moliceiros, the Portuguese gondolas, that travel around them––you can even take a canal tour for as cheap as $15.94.

Shall we remind you again how much those will cost you in the actual Venice?

Additionally, Aveiro rarely ever feels crowded, except for a handful of peak summer days, and even then, most of the visitors hail from other parts of Portugal or just neighboring Spain:

It’s yet to catch the gaze of most prying Instagrammers who are looking for the next European hidden gem or guided tour.

Other than charming canals and a timeless townscape, Aveiro is popular for its landmark cathedral, featuring a whitewashed bell tower, and delicious cuisine:

Great Food At Cheap Prices

It is the birthplace of ovos moles, a well-loved Portuguese sweet treat rivaling the world-renowned pastel de nata, made with pure egg yolks and sugar only––if you’re asking us, the best ones are served at this bakery called M1882, open e very day except Sunday.

Unless you’re vegan, make sure you add Tasquinha do Leitao to your list of restaurants to check out: they have the best roasted suckling pigs in town, presented with orange slices, and prices are more than reasonable.

Expect to pay around $14-16 for a main dish and a glass of local wine.

For sea beam and the signature Portuguese salted codfish bathed in olive oil and accompanied with baby potatoes, Necas’ House is the place to go, and if seafood’s the way to your heart, you can’t leave Aveiro without sampling some of Palhuça’s market-sourced squid and prawns.

Where To Stay In Aveiro This Spring

Looking for somewhere to stay in the heart of the Old Town, within walking distance to both the canal front and the train station?

The aptly named Veneza Hotel has nightly rates starting from an acceptable $72 this April, and in case you don’t mind splurging a little—if $104-a-night can even be considered a splurge at all—the 4-star, canal-lining Hotel Aveiro Palace is centrally located near all the best restaurants and photo spots.

It’s also a 10-minute drive from Barra and Costa Nova, two sandy beaches on the Atlantic that Aveiro locals commonly escape to in the balmy Portuguese spring.

The cheapest listing, however, is a 3-star economy room at Hotel Imperial, that should set you back by an almost-negligible $47 per night––no prepayment needed, free cancellation, and with an option to add breakfast for only $8 more on Booking.com.

Bottomline

On average, a weekend trip to Aveiro will run you up $316 as a solo traveler, as per Budget Your Trip estimates, placing it in the mid-range to cheap bracket.

For comparison, the same website indicates that a three-night stint in Venice is an eye-watering $869, and we’re inclined to believe them, based on hotel rates alone and the price of food, museums, and sightseeing tours.

Naturally, prices can widely vary depending on your profile as a traveler, but there’s no denying Aveiro is a much-better bargain than its famous Italian sister.

The closest airport to Aveiro is Porto International (OPO), some 41 miles north, hosting flights from Newark (EWR) and Boston (BOS).

From Porto, there are multiple train and bus connections to Aveiro daily, for as cheap as $7 one-way.

Not only is this hidden gem still exuding the charm of a bygone era, standing the test of time, but it beholds numerous secret islands and a treasure trove of maritime history and coastal charm waiting to be (re)discovered.

Welcome To Kittery, Maine: The East Coast’s Best Kept Secret

Ever heard of Kittery? Unless you’re from the region, likely, you haven’t. With Portland hogging Maine’s travel scene, it’s completely understandable.

But Kittery has existed for hundreds of years, and gatekeepers have done a phenomenal job of remaining tight-lipped about one of the East Coast’s best-kept secrets.

Being a town of only 10,000 residents, there’s no commercial airport here, but there is in neighboring Portsmouth, New Hampshire, another charming coastal town in its own right with connecting flights from budget airlines, Breeze and Allegiant, from popular hubs such as Orlando (MCO).

Otherwise, Boston International Airport (BOS) is only an hour away and has a lot more options.

Kittery has a fascinating timeline spanning centuries from formerly being named Amiciskeag by Native Americans years before tribes engaged in armed conflicts with French and English settlers for rights to the land, and we all know how that ultimately turned out…

Furthermore, what may seem like a tall tale is actually true. Pirates (yes, real-life pirates!) like infamous Blackbeard, once traversed Kittery’s isles, so you may want to bring a metal detector along as there have long been rumors of lost treasure left behind.

As Kittery stands today, you can’t help but notice the aesthetics of seafarer charm and the palpable sense of history throughout town, with sites like Fort McClary, a military fort used as far back as the Revolutionary War.

But even with all the historical significance, don’t expect Kittery to be a boring glimpse into the past.

Downtown (a.k.a. Kittery Foreside) has been transformed with quirky artisan shops, upscale cafes serving craft coffee concoctions, and a surging food scene leaving one travel guide to essentially describe Kittery as a mini Brooklyn.

Kittery’s Secret Islands: Barbecue, Beaches, And Waterfront Stays

Some islands of Kittery’s scenic shorelines are off-limits for tourism hence the secret. The good news is there’s plenty of islands nobody ever seems to talk about that make for awesome spring and summer getaways.

Let’s start with Gerrish Island. Visit Fort Foster Park for only $25, another historical site, but this one boasts small tranquil beaches and sweeping coastal scenery, including quintessential lighthouses.

Your best bet for the full Gerrish Island experience is to book a vacation rental on Vrbo or Airbnb since public access is closed (except for Fort Foster).

Next up is the Isle of Shoals, a series of islands spanning across state lines but featuring fun-to-say Smuttynose Island and Appledore Island on the Maine side of the dividing line.

To get here, though, you’ll need to cross over to Portsmouth and hob aboard a boat from Isle of Shoals Steamboat Company.

Unfortunately, they leave us hanging with the dreaded “coming soon” message on their calendar, but as the weather gets warmer, it’s all but certain they’ll restart service sooner rather than later.

Here is where I said you might want to bring a metal detector ,as these are pirates’ old stomping grounds,

Circling back toward town, there’s a pair of islands worth visiting: Badger Island (Maine) and New Castle (New Hampshire).

Badger is connected by bridge, so you can drive here, and boasts great eats like local favorite Ore Nell’s Barbecue served ‘Central Texas style’, while New Castle offers a great selection of waterfront hotels like Wentworth by the Sea with rave reviews claiming it’s a ‘charming historic hotel with a water view’ and has ‘lovely clean rooms antique style’.

Cheaper Than Portland

Maybe I’m in an exclusive club, but when I visited Portland, I was sticker-shocked by hotel prices. In fact, it’s the only city I’ve chosen to stay in a Motel 6 to save money.

Worst of all, they didn’t leave the light on for me! What a sham!

Portland has become so trendy, there’s no way I’m the only one noticing the city’s high prices whether it be top-rated lobster rolls or hotel rooms.

Travelers don’t have to worry about that in Kittery. In fact, one of its claims to fame, besides being Maine’s oldest city, is its shopping.

East Coast residents from all over make day trips to shop ’til they drop at the Kittery Outlets. Affordable prices don’t stop there, though.

Stay at the revamped Kittery Inn & Suites for just $64 this spring or The Water Street Inn, holding a perfect 5.0 Google rating, for $128.

Last but not least, it’s a must to have lobster, right? Dave’s Maine Cafe has lobster rolls for just $18!

If you thought ranches and rodeos were the only place for cattle herds, you haven’t been to an airport!

There’s no doubt TSA agents have a tough job keeping travelers safe, and it’s easy to see all the potential threats they deal with daily, from questionable liquids to sharp objects and always that one traveler who forgets to pack deodorant.

But on the receiving end, it’s a frustrating ordeal being moved like livestock in tight spaces where every airport seems to have different rules, which can add precious time to getting to your gate.

Plus, just when you think you’ve struck gold with a TSA PreCheck emblem on your boarding pass, somehow the PreCheck line always seems to be longer than the standard line of normies.

Security checkpoints and the boarding process may be the most annoying parts of travel, and a busy spring season surely won’t change that, but the TSA just issued a new travel alert urging travelers to follow 4 essential tips to make your experience at airports as seamless as possible.

Pack Wisely And Think Ahead

We’ve all been behind that one person who seems like they’ve never traveled before. Oh, that’s me. Sorry.

Despite having traveled to nearly 40 countries, that should speak volumes about how unorganized each airport around the world can be.

Well, with the exception of Oman – that place is spotless and a well-oiled machine!

But here in the U.S., it’s a fustercluck come spring, followed by summer. No matter how many places I go, it’s always a guessing game if liquids and electronics need to be removed and if I remember to take off my metal-clasped bracelet that always sets off that stupid machine.

TSA is asking travelers to meticulously organize their carry-ons for when these situations arise. This means having your liquids and electronics accessible so as not to hold up the line.

Sorry, guys. I’ll be better.

Arrive Early: Don’t Believe The ‘Airport Theory’

Just like we’ve all been behind people like me in airport lines, we’ve surely also tested fate by arriving way too close for comfort, ultimately missing our flight entirely or making it by the skin of our teeth.

TSA is urging travelers to arrive early and not take part in the current TikTok ‘airport theory’ which tests if you really need to arrive the suggested 2 hours before flight departure.

Newsflash: it doesn’t work!

As spring is one of the busiest times of year, it’s best to face the music and arrive early to ensure you make the vacation you’ve been waiting for all winter.

TSA considers spring’s peak season March 6 – 24, so if your trip falls in this window, expect crowds.

Last Call For REAL IDs!

The time has finally arrived. REAL IDs will be required for all flights this spring with few exceptions.

The goalpost has been pushed back until May 7, 2025 when TSA will be enforcing the new requirement to board flights.

While nobody wants to visit the DMV, nobody wants to miss their flight either over something so simple.

Every passenger aged 18 and over must show a valid ID or U.S. Passport or U.S. Passport Card.

There are some other options to bypass the new REAL ID requirements. For example, I don’t need one since I have a SENTRI card.

A Little Patience Goes A Long Way

As frustrating as airports can be, try to remember TSA agents are human like you and me and are simply doing their job to keep us all safe.

While certain tactics and rules may seem over the top, it’s for our own good whether we like it in the moment or not.

The truth is if you’re an avid traveler this spring, you’re going to experience some airport headaches, so it’s best to simply embrace it’s going to happen.

A little patience goes a long way and helps keep the security process running smoothly. And just know it’s illegal to harass and impede the work of federal employees, including TSA.

I’m a huge fan of low-cost airlines.

Ultra-low-cost carriers may not offer any frills, but they do give us the opportunity to explore new destinations on a very tight budget.

Frontier has demonstrated this perfectly this week by offering flights on its newest routes for as little as $29!  

Frontier is officially the fastest-growing airline in Atlanta thanks to a huge expansion that has seen departures increase from the hub by 40% year on year.  

Much more interestingly, this means that they’ve added new flights to new destinations from Atlanta. And these two overseas hotspots stand out from the crowd.  

New Flight From Atlanta to Aruba 

From May 24, Frontier will introduce a new weekly service from Atlanta to Oranjestad in Aruba. This will operate every Saturday throughout the summer months.  

The advertised rates for this route are ‘from $69’ each way, so how much will flights really cost?  

The cost of a return, nonstop flight for one traveler flying on June 14 and returning on June 21 is $309.

This is for a basic fare ticket which doesn’t include a carry on bag, checked bag, or the option to choose your own seat.  

If you want to add these extras then, as is the case with most low-cost airlines, these will be subject to an extra charge.  

Why Visit Aruba?  

There’s so much to love about Aruba. It is famed for its stunningly beautiful beaches, abundance of water sports, hiking in Arikok National Park, and laid-back vibes.  

Oranjestad is the main arrival point for visitors to Aruba, but its more than just a transport hub, it’s well worth exploring in its own right.

The city is famed for its brightly colored Dutch architecture and is a cultural melting pot of delicious foods and fun nightlife.  

It’s worth noting that Oranjestad is Aruba’s largest city as well as the main port of the island, so don’t be surprised to find that the streets are almost always busy and bustling with tourists.  

Want to get away to somewhere a little quieter? Head to the island’s western coast where the waters are warm and calm, but you’ll find fewer tourists here. Rodger’s Beach and Druif Beach are considered the two best beaches on this side of the island.  

New Flight From Atlanta to Honduras
 

From June 12, Frontier will add a new flight from Atlanta to San Pedro Sula, Honduras, to its schedule.  

This flight will operate three times a week, giving you more flexibility with the duration of your vacation. Frontier is advertising rates starting ‘from $59’ on this route.  

The cost of a return, nonstop flight for one traveler flying on June 17 and returning on June 24 is currently $243.  

Like the flight to Aruba, this is based on a basic fare ticket, but it’s worth noting that if you do want to take a carry on bag and to have the ability to choose your own seat then you can upgrade to the Economy Bundle for an additional $58. This includes carry on luggage and seat selection, but doesn’t include hold luggage.  

Why Visit San Pedro Sula?  

San Pedro Sula is located in the North of Honduas and is considered one of the country’s main transport hubs, acting a gateway to more obvious tourist attractions.

From here Copan, the Caribbean Coast, and the Bay Islands are all easily accessible.  

One of the closest beaches to San Pedro Sula and one of the best spots for travelers is the vast sands of Tela. Tela is famed for boasting the best beaches in Honduras and is an incredible scuba diving destination.  

Other attractions in Tela include the Lancetilla Botanical Garden, which is home to rare plant species from around the world, and the protected Punta Sal National Park, which is home to mangroves and coral reefs.  

While there’s so much to see and do, Tela is a great place to relax and unwind.

Despite being able to zoom through the skies at breakneck speed, slow travel is making a comeback.

And by ‘slow travel’, of course I mean trains.

Taking a page out of Europe’s and Asia’s playbook, the U.S. has been teasing more train routes and bullet trains for years, but even the train routes already in place are often overlooked in favor of taking a faster, more convenient flight rather than snagging a ground-level window seat to enjoy the journey.

Obviously, the most notable name in America’s train industry is Amtrak. The most popular carrier for train travel released a list of their ‘most scenic routes’ and this West Coast adventure takes the cake for the most beautiful train ride in the U.S.

The Coast Starlight: An Epic Journey From Seattle To L.A.

If you’re an indecisive traveler like me, Amtrak’s Coast Starlight route is the answer to your made-up travel problems.

This 35-hour journey takes you through just about every major West Coast city, along with stunning natural landscapes in between ranging from cascading mountain ranges to breathtaking blue-water coastlines.

Before diving further, don’t let the 35-hour runtime deter you; you’re welcome to hop off at any point, as there are dozens of stops, or stay for the full trek and attempt what’s sure to be a “raw dogging” record.

With daily departures from Los Angeles to Seattle and vice versa, the Coast Starlight offers a balanced mix of urban delights and natural attractions as you’ll pass by lush forests, snow-capped mountains, and some of the most fun-filled cities this side of the country.

No matter if you begin your journey in L.A. or Seattle, it’s the in-between that will leave a lasting memory.

Whether it’s window seat views of Santa Barbara’s stunning shores or towering pines throughout the Pacific Northwest, the whole trip is an Instagram post waiting to happen.

The Coast Starlight’s Hidden Gems

You’ll certainly recognize all the major cities you’ll traverse, such as L.A., San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and Seattle, Amtrak also highlights a pair of hidden gems as notable stopping points.

For outdoor adventurers, Klamath Falls, Oregon should top your list. This beautiful town is full of outdoor thrills from rafting tours, scenic biking trails, and of course, Crater Lake, one of America’s most postcard-worthy lakes.

The other hidden gem Amtrak mentions is California’s Central Coast hideaway, San Luis Obispo. This idyllic town is brimming with historic Missions, sprawling vineyards, and, according to HomeToGo, the top beach in America this spring.

But if you ask me, the real hidden gem is Paso Robles, California’s most underrated wine getaway that gives Napa a run for its money.

You Have To Check Out The Observation Car!

One huge benefit of train travel is avoiding being barked at by TSA. The hassle of airports is here to stay and as nice as the views are at cruising altitude, there’s an argument to be made that the experience of train rides is more fun and memorable.

With amenities like the Coast Starlight’s Observation Car, it’s like nothing you could experience on a plane with panoramic views of the world passing you by.

You’ll glide past rustic towns, iconic skylines, vast vineyards, and so much more that’s surely worth snagging a window seat whether it be in Coach or scoring a seat in the lounge.

Seating, Dining & Fares

Remember, the Coast Starlight route is hop-on hop-off, so you can divvy up the 35-hour journey as you see fit.

That’s an important question to ask yourself when booking your seat/accommodations. Obviously for shorter stints, you may want to go cheap with the lowest class, Lower/Upper Level Coach Class Seat.

Otherwise, more space is likely a priority.

If you’re anything like me, you’re likely wondering what it costs before making the commitment. There are a variety of ways to book the Coast Starlight; one of which is by booking a rail pass, which covers aforementioned hop-on hop-off privileges.

Otherwise, you can simply go to Amtrak’s official website and search your desired destinations. In this case, if you were to fully commit for the full ride, you would enter Seattle to Los Angeles (or vice versa) or shorter routes, such as Portland to San Luis Obispo, for example.

Fares will vary depending on availability, season, and ticket class. Before booking, don’t forget to check out the latest promotions!

We’re not sure about you, but we can’t seem to get the idea of Vespa rides into blood-orange sunsets or lounging on a fine-pebble beach hugged by crystal-clear waters out of our minds lately.

The Mediterranean is calling, and this summer, we plan on answering it.

There’s just one slight… problem. The Med is huge, and there are so many incredible destinations to choose from.

Maybe this is the year you finally check a beautiful Santorini off your bucket list, but then that offbeat Hvar in Croatia looks just as charming…

Oh, and how about Mallorca, over in Spain, with its vineyard-dotted hills and pristine calas? Don’t get us started on Côte d’Azur and its pastel-hued villages and vintage charm… ok, we get it, it would help would just narrow it down a little for you.

We definitely have our favorites ourselves, but if you’re one to look to TripAdvisor experts for advice, you should know they have just unveiled their Europe’s Best of the Best ranking for 2025, and surprise, surprise, 5 sun-drenched Mediterranean gems have made the top 20.

Without further ado, here’s our lucky winners––and why they should be on your radar this year:

Santorini, Greece

Santorini has been experiencing a rough patch lately due to earthquakes and landslides, but as the saying goes, the darkest hour is just before dawn.

Once the first rays of sunshine break through the overcast winter skies and weather conditions improve, we’re sure the island will be restored to its former glory, and there’s truly no better year to explore Greece’s whitewashed treasure than 2025:

From Imerovigli’s brand new One on One boutique hotel, with luxury villas overlooking the caldera, to Firostefani’s glitzy Nevma Suites, there is a host of exciting new listings we’re eager to experience firsthand ourselves this year.

On top of that, this is the year the Municipality of Thera, which governs Santorini, shifts its focus from Oia and other cliffside hotspots to hidden gems inland. They want to preserve Santorini’s close-to-being-lost cultural identity and promote tourism in lesser-explored areas.

After all, blue-dome churches and Instagrammable, bougainvillea-adorned villages is not all Santorini has to offer:

For instance, there’s Megalochori, a labyrinthian hilltop village with a multi-level bell tower, Akrotiri, where a red-sand beach and archeological ruins await discovery, and even Pyrgos, the highest village, and a fortress-style settlement characterized by its classic Aegean architecture.

Sardinia, Italy

Italy’s second largest island, Sardinia is a stand-alone destination you should dedicate one to two weeks to.

It lays claim to a whopping 1,242 miles of coastline, mostly comprised of sandy strips and teal-colored waters, not to mention it simply oozes Old World charm.

Cagliari, Sardinia’s capital and main port, is famous for its well-preserved, walled Old Town, 13th-century cathedral, renovated along Baroque lines, and unrivaled food scene–you truly haven’t been to Sardinia until you’ve tried the local fregola with clams.

If it’s the unspoiled coastal scenery that makes your heart skip a beat, however, maybe you should head straight for Costa Smeralda, the aptly-named Emerald Coast:

The water here is impressively clear, and the beaches are that perfect, powdery white sand.

Honestly, if it weren’t for the old fishing villages, with their scenic harbors and medieval centers, like Porto Cervo and Cannigione, you’d swear you’d landed in the Caribbean.

Can’t get enough of the subtropical vibes? The virtually untouched Maddalena islands are a short 20-minute boat ride away from Palau, and if you’re chasing those peaks, the Gennargentu National Park offers some of the most beautiful panoramas in all of the territory.

Mallorca, Spain

The trendiest holiday island in Spain, Mallorca truly needs no introduction:

It is well-known for its picture-perfect capital, Palma de Mallorca, a compact coastal hub dotted with historic landmarks, with a monumental Catalan-Gothic cathedral and a unique, round-shaped Bellver Castle, to name a couple, and numerous secluded coves bathed by turquoise waters.

It can get very busy in summer, especially with the influx of British and German tourists and the nonstop flights coming from America, so why add it to your itinerary in 2025?

Well, instead of flocking to a resort-dominated Cala d’Or, like everyone else, or the yacht-lined Port de Sóller, take a deep dive into Mallorca’s rich history instead:

Valldemossa is a beautiful, stone-built mountain village, retaining much of its ancient allure despite being founded as early as 123 BC, and Alcudia combines both seaside relaxation and cultural immersion with its intact medieval core and long ivory beach.

Looking to beat the crowds and soak up all that lush Mediterranean nature without the constant humdrum of the resort zones?

Book a 1 to 3-night stay at the pool-equipped Mon Boutique Hotel, nestled in the Pollença hills, and one-minute walk to one of the most idyllic towns anywhere in Mallorca––can you smell the citrusy aromas and hear the cicadas yet?

Crete

Greece’s most cosmopolitan island, as well as its largest, roughly the size of the U.S. state of Delaware, Crete boasts an incredibly-diverse tourist offer:

Only in the capital, the bustling Heraklion, will you find an imposing 16th-century fortress guarding the main port, a palm-backed marina filled with restaurants and gelato shops, and a 3,900-year-old Palace of Knossos, still partially preserved and with restored frescos.

Outside Heraklion, Samaria Gorge is the main attraction for nature lovers: it is one of Europe’s longest gorges, and there are planks allowing tourists to walk over the crystalline stream.

Over in Balos, there’s a natural lagoon bathed by a striking-blue Aegean, and for the iconic pink sands, head straight for Elafonissi, but do temper your expectations––the vividness of the pink depends on coastal conditions as well as the season.

For a traditional Cretan experience (with smaller crowds), take a day trip out to Chania, a quaint city famous for its medieval harbor, picturesque narrow streets, and bougatsa, a fluffy custard pastry you can find in just about every bakery up around the Old Town.

Sicily

It seems there’s just no beating Sicily when it comes to a Mediterranean escape.

The highest-ranking European summer paradise on TripAdvisor, Italy’s biggest island could well be its own country, judging by its unique character––it has a rich history comprising periods of Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman and even Islamic rule––distinct culture and even language.

Words like ‘buongiorno‘ and ‘grazie‘ will get you far anywhere in Italy, but in Sicily, if you truly want to impress locals, you might want to opt for the Sicilian equivalents ‘bonjornu‘ and ‘grazzi‘.

The territory’s main tourist destination and one that’s hosting U.S. flights beginning this summer, Palermo is a sprawling city known for its 12th-century cathedral. It is also home to several ancient royal tombs, the well-frequented Ballarò Street Market, and a lively port area.

A short drive from town, Mondello Beach has ivory sands and translucent seas, and Cefalù is a postcard-ready whitewashed village topped with a fortified Norman cathedral dating back to medieval times and flanked by the paradisiacal Settefrati beaches.

On the opposite end of the island, Catania is the second-busiest Sicilian hub, that will equally be served by Transatlantic flights in the upcoming high season.

For architecture enthusiasts, the cathedral square and its ornate elephant fountain are a must, and foodies simply cannot skip A Piscaria, the local fish market, off Piazza Alonzo di Benedetto––best sardines and lemon-sprayed clams you’ll get anywhere in Sicily!

Oh, and Catania is backdropped by a towering Etna, an active volcano that will occasionally spew ash at its most agitated––in quieter periods, however, it’s great for summiting, commanding breathtaking views of the greater landscape.

If you’re a White Lotus fan, you’ll want to check out Taormina, a one-hour train ride from Catania, for a Roman theater overlooking the ocean, or even an offbeat Noto, featured in the show’s second run thanks to its impressive Baroque basilica and richly-decorated Palazzo Nicolaci.

After much of the U.S. dealt with frigid cold winters, springtime is essentially an open invitation to explore the great outdoors.

We all know California is one of the best states for an awesome beach getaway, but it also boasts some of the best national and state parks in the nation, such as Joshua Tree, Yosemite, and, most notably for this particular article, Sequoia National Park.

Home to unbelievably towering trees and some of the prettiest scenery I’ve personally ever seen in the Golden State, Sequoia draws crowds from all over the U.S.

But why not visit a place that’s nearly identical with fewer tourists, spacious trails, equally pretty photo-ops, and nearby wineries to cap off a much-needed relaxing escape in nature?

You can do so in far lesser-known Calaveras Big Trees State Park, an underrated state park that undoubtedly lives up to its name, and visitor satisfaction is through the roof!

Word to the wise – Whichever state park you decide to visit this spring; don’t do like I did at Sequoia by renting a cheap Toyota Yaris only to deal with the anxiety of wondering whether it will make it up a rocky hill or if I’d soon be calling AAA for assistance in the middle of nowhere.

Needless to say, a little extra engine oomph goes a long way.

Obviously, you will need a vehicle to explore Calaveras as it’s located roughly 2 hours away from the nearest airport, Sacramento, which is also worthy of spending some time before venturing off into the woods as California’s trending capital city is breaking tourism records.

From Sacramento, you’ll head through some of NorCal’s hidden gems, such as Lodi, before you weave through the western slopes of the Sierra in what’s hopefully not a Toyota Yaris before ultimately reaching this nearly century-old state park.

Day-use passes are $10. Before planning your trip, there are some notable closures to vehicles to be aware of:

• Walter W. Smith Parkway (until May 1, 2025)
• Scenic Overlook
• Lava Bluffs
• Stanislaus River
• South Grove
• Bradley Grove
• Beaver Creek

Emphasis On ‘Big Trees’

A visit to Calaveras is all the more enjoyable without dozens of tourists lined up to take the same selfie you’re trying to take like you might find at Sequoia National Park.

Until you witness Calaveras’ staggering Sequoia trees in person, you won’t believe how huge they truly are.

There are ample trails to taking you deep into the park under canopies of giants that are often thousands of years old.

The South Grove may be off-limits for vehicles for now, but here you’ll find at least 1,000 towering trees, while the North Grove is home to roughly 100.

One of the most popular sites is the “Father of the Forest” a fallen behemoth thought to stand as tall as 400 feet in its heyday and like Sequoia, there are carved-out trees to pass through for the perfect Instagram shot.

Visitors have truly fallen in love with Calaveras and the proof is in the pudding. Park guests have ooh-ed and ahh-ed about their experiences ranging from the cozy on-site cabins, ‘breathtaking trees’, to being the highlight of an entire California road trip.

If you thought Napa was the only place to sip California’s finest wine, think again! There are numerous inviting wine destinations spread across California; some more popular than others.

The tiny town of Murphys may not have been on your 2025 Bingo card until now, but it should be.

With over 20 family-owned wineries, this charming small town is a far cry from what some might say is overly curated Napa.

Additionally, after a long day exploring Calaveras’ vast wilderness, there’s no better way to reward yourself with sinfully delicious eats than a top-rated V Restaurant, Bistro & Bar.

There are many wineries to choose from along the town’s main strip like fun-to-say Frog’s Tooth Winery or the oldest family-owned winery, Milliaire Winery.

For more space and pretty scenery, there are multiple wineries and vineyards away from the quaint townscape, such as Locke Vineyards, Ironstone Vineyards, and Indian Rock Vineyards.

One recent visitor to Murphy’s Ironstone Vineyards may have put it best by saying, “Basically, Murphy’s is now one huge wine tasting room. The wines on the main street are hit and miss, but when we skipped town and came here, we hit the jackpot”.
