An alternative to Punta Cana? That might sound crazy, but there’s a brand new Dominican airport slated to open by the end of 2025.

Scouring travel forums, there’s already pushback at just the thought of a Punta Cana dupe, especially as Samana, Miches, and Puerto Plata inch closer to becoming mainstream each year.

But the Pedernales Province is one of the Dominican Republic’s last frontiers for tourism, and it might be off-putting to some simply because of its close proximity to neighboring Haiti, which, it goes without saying, is not exactly the postcard paradise it should be.

Home to stunning footprint-free shores, vibrant coastal villages, and far fewer crowds than Punta Cana’s flashy resorts, like it or not, Cabo Rojo is set to become the Dominican Republic’s new vacation hotspot once the Pedernales International Airport cuts the blue ribbon by year’s end.

Pedernales: The D.R.’s Virtually Untouched Shores

Untouched Caribbean seaside? Now that’s a selling point Punta Cana can’t offer.

If there’s one claim to fame in Pedernales, it’s Bahía de las Águilas, often going neck and neck with Punta Cana’s Playa Bavaro as the country’s most beautiful beach.

You’ll find gleaming white sand and vibrant turquoise waters, except there’s minimal development here, offering a better experience than Bavaro for those who don’t like crowds — but who does?

The stunning shores don’t stop there, though. In fact, Bahía de las Águilas is likely hard-pressed for competitors since this side of the D.R. is less frequented by vacationers, often viewed as more of a tight-lipped local escape.

One such place is Playa Blanca, a secret hideaway boasting epic sunsets and only has reviews from locals (all but one is a perfect 5-star rating by the way).

Another is Playa Cabo Rojo in the town of the same name where the new airport is located. Local patrons claim to enjoy the ‘crystal clear waters ‘ and close access to nearby attractions — not to mention ‘soft white sand’ and completely trash-free despite a lack of infrastructure being so isolated.

Most foreign tourists have yet to discover the spectacular shores near Cabo Rojos, but that’s expected to change in 2026 with far more enticements than just the region’s flawless beaches (with the exception of an occasional sargassum invasion).

Genuine Culture & Jaw-Dropping Nature

While there are a few negative aspects of Punta Cana, such as the prices for all-inclusives being more than reasonable, it lacks culture.

From what I saw on my trip, Punta Cana has become a tourist haven solely for its astounding beaches, posh resorts, and seductive vacation home market, while the culture is left to places like bustling Santo Domingo.

That’s not the case for Cabo Rojo, where Punta Cana’s curated experiences far outweigh any cultural delights you might find elsewhere.

That’s not to say there isn’t a slight touristy vibe, though. Just last fall, Port Cabo Rojo was completed, making it more appealing to cruisers to disembark and explore the region.

The town’s goal is to attract 150,000 cruise passengers in 2025, with no telling how many more air travelers come in 2026 once word spreads of this up-and-coming Dominican gem.

With such lush nature like Jaragua National Park, Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge and the breathtaking Oviedo Lagoon (within Jaragua) with scenic boat tours and more flamingos than a Tommy Bahama shirt, it’s easy to see why the Dominican government chose this region to showcase.

The Pro Pedernales Tourism Project: Name-Brand Hotels & New Airport

Information regarding which airlines will serve Pedernales International Airport remains a mystery at this point, but given how the D.R. has been a raging success ever since the pandemic, it would be shocking if no U.S. airlines were among the first to join in.

What we do know is that the airport will open by the end of the calendar year, and if it’s anything like Tulum’s highly anticipated opening, airlines will trickle in month after month, creating a new Caribbean vacation hotspot.

As for hotels, there’s a lot more information with confirmed commitments from household names.

Last winter, it was confirmed such brands as Hyatt and Iberostar are set to develop new properties here with the goal to make Pedernales the Dominican’s next ‘luxury tourist destination’.

We all know Rome is an instantly recognizable icon that lures all levels of travelers, from first-timers to the most seasoned of us with beat-up passports.

As such, we all know Rome’s crowds can be a bit out of control. Perhaps more so in a Jubilee Year. Not to trash one of the world’s most renowned cities, but it’s safe to say 2025 isn’t the best year to visit for the best possible experience.

According to Travel + Leisure, one local innkeeper was quoted as saying, ““If you’re coming in 2025, you should plan ahead for accommodation, sights like the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, for all the things you need reservations and tickets for”.

Plus, Rome’s new tourist taxes are taking a bite from your coffee budget, and what better country to indulge in velvety cappuccinos?

Rome aside, there’s obviously a treasure trove of premiere destinations to immerse in Italy’s fascinating timeline, such as the romantic streets of Florence, ancient wonders of Pompeii, or whatever you believe about the Shroud of Turin, which has garnered more attention as of late with new findings.

But hey, let’s not sleep on Italy’s postcard coastlines either, where you don’t have to venture all the way down to the Amalfi Coast or Sicily.

Just 1 hour from Rome lies one of Italy’s most hush-hush paradises — and TimeOut just let the cat out of the bag.

Day Trip Or Main Stay, Don’t Skip Terracina!

Terracina is located on Italy’s Pontine Coast. Between Rome and Naples lies numerous secluded beach towns falling in the shadow of this pair of cultural cities.

With many tourists being more food and wine focused, beach getaways fall to the wayside, leaving a cluster of coastal paradises relatively undiscovered by mainstream travelers who care more about Rome’s Colosseum and Naples’ endless rows of pizza parlors.

TimeOut believes Terracina stands out the most, despite Sperlonga, Sabaudia, and Nettuno being worthwhile beach hideaways in their own right.

Terracina is perched between the foothills of Monte Sant’Angelo and the vibrant Tyrrhenian Sea, boasting a charming waterfront promenade and timeless Old Town giving a glimpse into the bygone era of Romans, while also embracing more modern acclaim as a seafood hub with TimeOut-backed Vicoletto.

For what its’ worth, Old Town Terracina is renowned by visitors on TripAdvisor with one recent tourist claiming ‘Terracina surprised us! Walking on the ancient pavement of the square transforms the visitor into a real Roman citizen’.

Terracina’s Best Beaches

Where to start? Terracina is speckled with gleaming blue-water shores from the jump, connecting from each end of town to aforementioned neighbors.

Spiaggia Sperlonga is Terracina’s top-reviewed beach on Google (technically one town over). One beachgoer said it’s a ‘clean beach, possibility of long walks, fantastic sunsets, kiosks present with excellent food’.

Fiumetta Beach is another top-rated beach, but locals are ashamed of the trash left behind. According to recent reviews, the aftermath of a many-a good times has presented painful moments of stepping on beer caps, which might be worse than LEGO pieces!

There are numerous beach hotels to choose from whether in Terracina proper or the connecting towns of Porte Dabino.

There you’ll find one of travelers’ favorite stays, Torre del Sol, a 4-star beachfront hotel with fantastic sea views and a $3 shuttle to go out and about town.

As for Terracina, you simply can’t beat the serenity of Hotel Acquasanta, which is nestled away from the “action” on a private beach and won’t break the bank at about $130 per night.

All Aboard! Easy 1-Hour Train Ride From Rome

Given Terracina is home to just 44,000 residents, you’ve probably gathered there’s no direct flight here.

The easiest journey is to fly into Rome and hop aboard a train that takes 51 to 69 minutes, depending on the schedule that day.

Operated by Trenitalia, you can purchase tickets on their official website or popular third parties like Omio.

Best of all, it’s as low as $4, according to Trainline. The official website has it listed for $6 most days.

Local publication Terracina Online claims the $16 Leonardo Express takes arriving tourists from Rome’s Fiumicino airport to Rome Termini, where there’s a direct train to Terracina every hour.

You could also take a train from Naples, also operated by Trenitalia, but expect to tack on another 30 to 45 minutes to your trip as well as a few more dollars.

Delta has doubled down on that fact by announcing a plethora of exciting new flights to not one, not two, not three, but seven stunning international beach destinations!

Some are household names, while others are still rising in the ranks. But hey, that just means fewer crowds to deal with.

Bottom line — there’s no doubt you can go wrong with any of these paradisal getaways.

Think crystal-clear waters, flashy resorts, and all the delights Mexico and the Caribbean have to offer, whether you’re visiting to indulge in endless cocktails at the swim-up bar or simply looking to escape the city grind wasting away in a beachside hammock.

No matter your preference, Delta has got you covered with their latest launch, which is slated for later this year.

Delta’s New Flights To Caribbean Islands

Who wants to go to the Caribbean?! Well, that’s probably a dumb question. Who would say no?

Delta is giving you more options as if the Caribbean wasn’t teeming with enough postcard island getaways.

According to Airline Geeks, Delta is adding 11 new routes, but not all are to some of the prettiest beaches imaginable.

No offense to Los Angeles, but Santa Monica needs a bit of a cleanup, don’t ya think?

The Caribbean, however, is brimming with white-sand hideaways from notable names such as Punta Cana, which Delta is also increasing capacity from Atlanta.

But let’s get down to the nitty-gritty — the 5 proper Caribbean destinations Delta will be serving with new flights (don’t worry; we’ll get to Mexico in a sec).

Let’s start with some Caribbean up-and-comers, such as St. Vincent and the Grenadines, which, as just announced, is breaking all-time visitor records, and Grenada, which has seen 26 straight months of continued growth.

Both these pristine, lesser-known island retreats will soon be served by Atlanta.

Now for the rest, with more notable names:

• Minneapolis to Nassau, Bahamas
• Detroit to Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (check out American’s historic new flight too!)
• Atlanta to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
• Boston to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Delta’s New Routes To Mexico’s Icons

You know where this is going…

As if Cancun needed any more connections, Delta just said “hold my cerveza“.

Americans’ favorite international beach vacation spot is becoming even easier to reach with a new flight from 3 U.S. cities:

• Nashville
• Kansas City
• Indianapolis

But, here’s the kicker: the new Cancun routes will only be offered on Saturdays, so plan accordingly. Although, Detroit lucked out a bit with additional flights being added to their already existing route.

When you land, don’t forget to take the new $7 shuttle to avoid the ongoing feud between taxis and Ubers.

Scroll back up and notice I said ‘icons’ — plural. That’s right; Delta is also launching a new flight to Cabo.

Austin is the big winner for this new route with daily service to Baja’s numero uno paradise, but let’s hope the airfare doesn’t top the resort rates — yikes!

While Cabo is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Baja, and always one of Mexico’s most visited cities, you might be surprised to know Cabo has also become more of a gateway to nearby beach destinations, such as the small coastal town of Todos Santos with vibrant culture and posh stays, or La Paz, a bigger city known for epic seafood cuisine and one of Latin America’s most beautiful beaches, Balandra.

All of Delta’s new routes are slated to launch December 20, 2025.

Delta Recap: The Popular Airline Is Going Big This Year!

In case you missed it in March, Delta made another major announcement for some thrilling off-path destinations Americans can reach easier than ever before.

Going beyond the glitz and glamour of Cancun and The Bahamas, Delta is betting big on travelers’ sense of adventure in 2025.

According to research conducted by MBO Partners, 18.1 million U.S. citizens are officially digital nomads, or roughly 11% of the total American workforce.

That’s a stunning number in itself, considering that, prior to 2020, the concept of remote work was restricted almost exclusively to IT and certain niche fields of entrepreneurship.

The primary goal of these individuals is to be location-independent while earning a living, and many of them have an innate passion for traveling, and you’re likely to find them anywhere the sun is shining, and the cost of living is low, from Mexico, to Spain, to Thailand.

Be that as it may, an equally significant percentage of American nomads are quite happy city-hopping in their own neck of the woods and aren’t exactly keen on relocating to a foreign country.

One U.S. city in particular has in fact tripled its digital nomad population since 2019, charting ahead of long-time faves for tech-savvies like Austin and San Francisco.

Miami Is America’s Top Nomad Hotspot Right Now

Florida’s most popular beach destination, Miami is America’s leading nomad hub right now, leading not only in numbers, but in public opinion:

According to this other Hostinger analysis, it is the best home base for digital nomads craving a change of scenery while keeping it somewhat ‘local’.

Miami has excelled not only in the ‘freelance income potential’ category, thanks to its thriving economy and myriad of career opportunities, but also its big selection of coworking spaces.

It has a well-established cafe scene that puts it on a par with New York, Chicago, Seattle and the like, and wherever you are in the sprawling coastal metropolis, you’re never too far from a laptop-friendly eatery serving delicious daytime brunch to keep you going.

Think a cozy The Cafe At Books & Books in Coral Gables, a solid pick for overcoming that persistent writer’s block if you’re an independent writer—free WiFi, floor-to-ceiling shelves stacked with books, timeless wooden furniture, and an intellectual vibe throughout.

For a livelier environment and a quick 30-minute inbox-clearing sesh powered by strong coffee, we love Magdalena in Edgewater, and if you feel a light breakfast in an airy, soft-lit space will get you to boost your productivity, try Little Haiti’s Panther Coffee.

A Vibrant Culture & Social Scene

Speaking of Little Haiti, it is one of Miami’s most vibrant ethnic neighborhoods (one of many!), boasting a high concentration of Caribbean-style restaurants, creative murals covered in street art, and quirky indie galleries.

The local Caribbean Marketplace is particularly great for finding local produce if you’re staying in Miami a while, as well as buying Afro-Caribbean handicraft.

Over in Little Havana, the heart of Miami’s Cuban community, you’ll stumble upon an equally fascinating cultural scene, from Calle Ocho, lined with cantinas and walk-up windows selling Cuban cigars, to the busy meeting point that is Maximo Gomez Park.

Then there’s South Beach, or how we like to call it, quintessential Miami, with its historic charm—you’ve probably never seen this beautiful collection of pastel-hue, Art Deco facades anywhere—cosmopolitan feel, and active nightlife

If you’re wondering where to go for some fun on a Friday night, Ocean Drive’s where it’s at.

In sum, there is plenty about Miami and its diverse communities that will keep you inspired and get your creative juices flowing when you need them most.

High Quality Of Life & No Visas Required

As MBO Partners have concluded, Miami also scores well in monthly living costs: though it is the gateway to Latin America, by no means does it share the nether subcontinent’s cheap prices, but life here doesn’t have to be expensive to be enjoyed.

In fact, nomads will spend an average $2,200-$2,800 per month, in line with other Floridian cities, and tourism hotspots across America, and somewhat cheaper than the average for places like New York and Chicago.

Rent is truly the one thing that will nab the greatest chunk of your income, particularly if you’re keen on living in a trendy Wynwood, or a Bohemian Coconut Grove—on the other hand, grocery prices are reasonable, and there is plenty of affordable dining options around.

Another one of Miami’s undeniable appeal for American nomads is the fact it is a domestic destination boasting pleasant weather and white-sand beaches.

Americans don’t need to apply for a Digital Nomad Visa (commonly shortened to DNV), worry about entry and stay regulations, or for God’s sake, even have a passport when choosing Miami as their new temporary hub: this is the United States, after all!

Latin America, Europe and Asia are great, but have you tried qualifying for one of those hard-to-get DNVs, or living on constant visa-runs to avoid breaking immigration law?

Lastly, this is the closest you can get to being in a tropical location Stateside, as temperatures here vary from 62°F to 90°F during the year, and they rarely fall below 50°F.

As a local coworking space founder Karla Rodriguez has added, ‘Miami offers what nomads crave most’, namely the infrastructure for productivity, coupled with ‘endless opportunities for rejuvenation’: in other words, it offers great quality of life.

An airline you may not be quite as familiar with has taken over U.S. skies as the ‘most reliable’ carrier in the country.

Given my awful experiences with budget airlines lately, that’s quite a feat, but not one to worry about with Avelo Airlines.

One of America’s newest additions, taking its first flight in Spring 2021, the low-cost carrier has rapidly expanded since its inception, starting off solely as a domestic carrier and now offering travelers affordable fares to some of the most sought-after international beach destinations.

Recently announcing a fourth international flight to one of the Caribbean’s most popular resort destinations, Avelo’s passport-required portfolio now totals 4 premiere getaways for an epic vacation.

Avelo Now Flies To 4 Amazing Caribbean Destinations

As the official first day of spring is right around the corner, there’s no better time to plan a Caribbean escape.

The downside is airlines know this and often jack up the prices knowing you’ll pay it regardless.

Well, that’s the beauty of budget airlines, especially when they’re as reliable as Avelo and not fighting bankruptcy or removing the only enticing perk that’s built a loyal team of travelers for decades (ahem, Southwest).

The Bahamian capital is gleaming with colorful streets, gorgeous white sand beaches, and towering resorts with equal parts relaxation and entertainment for the whole family.

Travelers will have to wait until summer to take advantage of the new Nassau route as it’s slated to launch June 11, 2025, with two flights per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

One unexpected East Coast state has been quietly creeping up on travelers’ itineraries the past few years, including my own.

The magnetizing seafarer’s charm, endless seafood shacks, and tranquil shores of Maine have become a huge draw for travelers seeking sun and sand over the big city grind, but the O.G. of idyllic East Coast beaches is still alive and well…and surprisingly affordable!

That would be Massachusetts — home to popular beach destinations of Cape Cod, Provincetown, and Martha’s Vineyard

But there’s another lesser-known cluster of beach towns with virtually no crowds, and recently highlighted as the East Coast’s most affordable coastal getaway.

Cape Ann: New England’s Affordable Seaside Paradise

You might be wondering where Cape Ann is located and how it’s slipped through the cracks for so long, and rightfully so.

An easy 53-minute trip from Boston lies this gorgeous peninsula lined with numerous towns oozing charm and character with rustic waterfront shops, scenic harbors, and of course, beautiful beach hideaways.

Deeply steeped in maritime history, Cape Ann is a classic New England coastal escape with strong ties to the sea, which has now transformed into an underrated vacation spot.

Rather than name-brand resorts, Cape Ann boasts cozier stays without the corporate nonsense. Think historic inns and boutique stays, such as Rockport Inn & Suites in the low $100s through April.

Although, your best bargain isn’t a hotel but a State Park. Halibut State Park, located at the very tip of the peninsula, is free to enter and great spot for cycling, hiking, and sweeping coastal views.

Which Beach Towns To Visit

Let’s unpack this cluster of Cape Ann towns to give you a better idea of where to vacation this spring.

Gloucester:

Proudly boasting America’s oldest seaport, this scenic town blends history and coastal bliss with multiple insightful museums as well as stunning natural beauty.

A true vacation destination, despite not being a household name, there’s plenty to do, see, and indulge in.

Of the cluster of towns making up Cape Ann, Gloucester is arguably the best for a quintessential beach vacation.

So much so, their tourism goes as far as boldly claiming their vibrant coastlines behold ‘several of the world’s most beautiful beaches’ such as Good Harbor Beach with Caribbean-esque waters.

Order ‘oak grilled’ entrees from a wood-fired grill and 500-gallon smoker at Oak to Ember in the heart of the Seaport, book an ocean-view room at Beauport Hotel, and cap off your beach day with a sunset cruise.

Manchester-by-the-Sea:

Manchester-by-the-Sea (also known simply as “Manchester”) is a tranquil seaside town offering an upscale lifestyle with unmissable cliffside mansions, slower pace, and one of the American’s most unique beaches.

Singing Beach got the name not because it’s a 24/7 karaoke party but because the sand “sings” when you walk on it.

In a CBS News report showcasing how unique and wonderful Singing Beach is to visit, one resident claimed “Honestly, when it’s quiet, it’s heaven. It really is.”

Of this bunch of beach towns, Manchester is the priciest, but mostly in real estate. That being said, your best bet is booking in a neighboring town (or Boston) and making a day trip out of it.

Rockport:

While many vacationers enjoy much-needed downtime in peace and quiet, Rockport is where the “action” is with quirky shops, line-out-the-door seafood eateries, and Motif #1, the ‘most often-painted building in America’.

In other words, this beautiful coastal town is a huge draw for artists, free spirits and non-conformists as it offers a vibrant, welcoming, Boho atmosphere.

Unlike Gloucester’s long stretches of beaches, Rockport offers pint-sized coved and more secluded shores.

Grab a must-have bowl of Clam Chowdah from The Fish Shack, unwind in a seaside lounge chair at Eden Pines Inn, and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the calm blue waters.

Southern Living just released the ‘South’s Best of 2025′, covering categories from ‘Best Seafood Dives’, ‘Best Cruise Lines’, and of course, it wouldn’t be a trip to the South without scoping out the ‘Best Beach Towns‘.

No offense to Southern living, but the big winner was a Georgia island we covered before their big reveal — and yes, it definitely lives up to the hype.

As for Florida, the Sunshine State always packs a punch, whether it be world-renowned cities or vibrant Caribbean-esque beaches.

In this case, a white sand island in the midst of making a significant comeback was crowned Florida’s top destination for 2025.

Hit hard not once, not twice, but three times by hurricanes in the past couple of years, Fort Myers’ Sanibel Island is ready to embrace vacationers yet again — with a caveat.

Florida’s Most Authentic Island: No Stoplights Or Eyesore Resorts

Us humans are an odd bunch.

One moment, we’re searching for the best of the best resort getaways, and the next, we’re seeking rustic small towns with old-timey soda fountains and cozy cottages to escape the city grind.

Sanibel offers a mix of both with a handful of resorts and small town charm, but the island is far from flashy, even with exclusive gated communities like the Kenzie Island neighborhood.

Beachgoers won’t find towering condos overpowering swaying palm trees; just a tranquil, unhurried pace of life to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, whether it be white-sand beaches wrapping the island or ample hiking trails within.

To prove a point about how laid-back Sanibel really is, there are not even stoplights here. Nor are there big-box chains.

Sanibel relies heavily on small businesses and embraces a sense of community, and few places would be happier to welcome you than the locals here as the island has been ravaged by Mother Nature’s wrath multiple times leaving a lasting dent on the economy.

But 2025 is the year Sanibel is turning a corner. So, when you’re seeking your next beach getaway, you can feel a little better knowing your money is reviving a tight-knit community’s beloved natural paradise.

Is Sanibel Island Really Florida’s Top Beach Destination?

We’ve covered numerous white sand paradise ranging from Mississippi’s Ship Island to lesser-known Florida hideaways.

With so many scenic escapes across the South (and particularly Florida), one has the right to question if Sanibel Island is really worth being crowned the top beach destination fresh off disastrous hurricanes.

If you ask me, it all boils down to what type of traveler you are. If you’re a rowdy springbreaker looking for the best beach parties, Sanibel isn’t for you.

If you’re in the 30-and-up crowd like me, then experiencing a serene setting along blue-water beaches and little crowds couldn’t be more enticing — and that’s the big draw for Sanibel.

Plus, it’s easy to reach from well-connected Fort Myers, and there’s plenty to do. I mean, even bucket-list paradises like Bora Bora have been dubbed “Boring Boring”, so what’s the point?

Sanibel is a beautiful island with just enough resorts, small-town charm, quaint cottages, and seemingly endless nature to explore that will captivate you.

In fact, many first-time vacationers wish they had booked one way flights here rather than have to go back home — that’s how alluring Sanibel can be.

Whether it be perusing shops along Periwinkle Way, biking 25 miles of trails, or indulging in southern staples at MudBugs Cajun Kitchen, if you’re like everyone who visits, you won’t want to leave!

Albeit the one drawback from recent visitors has been the water coloration due to the aftermath of the hurricane, which seems to be hit or miss depending who you ask.

Sanibel’s Longstanding Claim To Fame

While snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, and even rocking the knee-high socks-and-sandals combo while treasure hunting is always fun, what visitors look most forward to in Sanibel is shelling.

In fact, it’s safe to say Sanibel is Florida’s unofficial shelling capital. Believe it or not, a Fort Myers news report claims one local beachcomber gets so excited to shell, she’s been nicknamed…wait for it…”Shelly”.

I guess we now know who sells seashells down by the seashore.

There are all types of shells washing ashore, but if you’re new to the shelling game, Southern Living claims finding a Junonia shell is basically like winning the lottery.

And if that doesn’t put an official stamp on ‘shelling capital’ status, then surely a visit to Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum will.
