Arizona plates have already taken over San Diego highways, which means only one thing – it’s the unofficial start to summer.

But this summer will be different than the rest as quite possibly the most highly anticipated hotel in America is set for a soft opening May 15th, followed by the official blue-ribbon cutting the following days.

A whopping $1.3 billion was spent to bring not only the largest hotel on the West Coast, but the first-ever resort to Chula Vista, a lesser-known city sandwiched between San Diego and the Mexico border, and one of the last remaining swaths of untouched land in Southern California for a secluded, paradisal escape.

As many vacationers seek out ritzy stays in Coronado and Del Mar and family-friendly fun in San Diego’s Mission Beach, it’s actually Chula Vista that’s destined to be California’s new summer vacation hotspot with the grand opening of Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center.

Chula Vista? Where?

Most often, San Diego tourists stay central in and around Balboa Park or venture west to nearby beaches or north to small beach towns or Legoland in Carlsbad, but few tourists even consider Chula Vista unless they’re passing through to have a wild night in Tijuana just across the border.

South Bay, as it’s known, hasn’t been a particular draw to outsiders unless they’ve seen a viral taco stand on TikTok, experienced a classic drive-in theater, or wanted to see the famous “wall”.

Chula Vista boasts a beautiful bay with lush green parks and a vibrant marina, but no proper beaches. Imperial Beach, the southernmost beach in the U.S., is more known for its hazardous conditions due to sewage run-off from Mexico rather than how its postcard boardwalk and the only other South Bay beach, Silver Strand, is a state-run beach with entry fees, and even so, there’s nothing the state can do to temper bacteria from spreading north.

As such, the South Bay didn’t have much of a selling point until this month. In fact, the most notable selling point before the Gaylord’s soon-to-be grand opening is Seven Mile Casino, a couple of blocks away, which gets its name from the 7-mile drive to downtown San Diego.

So, the Gaylord is actually one of the most convenient resorts to San Diego vacationers despite being in a different city.

The Gaylord Pacific: A Destination Unto Itself

According to San Diego Magazine, the Gaylord Pacific is set to debut 12 restaurants. Unfortunately, it’s not all-inclusive, but guests will have an array of options from the dry-aged experts at Old Hickory Steakhouse with sweeping bay views, sushi to-go at Taiyo so you snack poolside or fuel up for a sunny day spent floating the lazy river, and even Growlers Sports Bar & Taproom, boasting a 75-foot tv screen to watch the big game in peace away from noisy kiddos.

Gaylord has something for everyone, but it’s definitely family-friendly, with its 4+ acre water park featuring slides, a wave pool, and a massive water playground.

Not that you would ever want to leave the resort grounds, just last month, Sweetwater Park reopened to the public with miles of pedestrian walkways and bikeways lining the scenic bayside — the perfect place to take in the sunset if you don’t care to make the 20 minute drive to San Diego’s Sunset Cliffs.

The Gaylord offers a wide range of accommodations, from standard rooms with mountain, marina, or Pacific views to 89 spacious suites, including the posh Presidential Suite with an ocean-view balcony worth the sky-high price alone.

Grand opening weekend rates are as low as $350 per night, while mid-summer rates are in the $500s.

What Else To Do In Chula Vista

As a resident of Chula Vista, I have to say I love living here! Out of all the places I’ve lived in San Diego County, this city is my favorite.

Rather than follow the tourists who flood the Gaslamp Quarter, check out Chula Vista’s Third Avenue District, a pint-sized drag of breweries, dive bars, cafes, food trucks, taco shops, and my favorite restaurant in the city, Lime in the Coconut.

Eating in Chula Vista is a loophole for your tastebuds to enjoy authentic flavors of Baja without needing a passport. There are numerous hole-in-the-wall taco stands serving Tijuana-style tacos and mulas like famous Tacos El Gordo, or you can compare Jalisco flavors to Baja’s with newly-opened El Pastor Del Rica, owned by champion boxer Canelo Alvarez.

But Chula Vista isn’t just a place to eat; it’s a highly underrated place to explore the outdoors. The further East you go, the more you’ll want to come back to the coast to cool off during the summer months.

One of my favorite local secrets is Mountain Hawk Park in the Eastlake neighborhood of Chula Vista.

It boasts panoramic Otay Lake views backdropped by the staggering Otay Mountain range.

People who’ve only seen Texas through the lens of classic Westerns will be gobsmacked by how diverse the Lone Star State really is.

Whether you’re drawn to charming small towns where the aroma of pit-smoked barbecue infuses your clothes, culturally vibrant cities with deep Hispanic roots, or the unique blend of cowboy tradition and modern growth in cities like Fort Worth, there’s no shortage of wondrous destinations in Texas.

Of course, there are some places that aren’t all they’re cracked up to be, either, as Austin has essentially become the new Dallas, and certain small towns definitely live up to let’s say, patriotic, trailer park-laden eyesores.

But no need to worry when hopping aboard perhaps the South’s most underrated train ride, the Texas Eagle, which features some of Texas’s most delightful small towns and captivating cities all in one route.

As a born-and-raised Texan turned California transplant, I had the pleasure of visiting San Antonio recently, reigniting my forgotten love for my home state.

In fact, I lived in 6 destinations on this route and never took the train (womp, womp).

Don’t be like me and regret not exploring Texas by rail. Hop aboard the Texas Eagle’s cushy air-conditioned cabins this summer and make sure to score a seat in the newly upgraded Sightseer Lounge!

Sorry Amarillo! The Texas Eagle Covers Texas’s Best Destinations

No offense to the armpit of Texas, but the Texas Eagle nails it by offering a mix of idyllic East Texas towns, sprawling metropolises, and anything in between.

Much of the barren land, like Amarillo, Abilene, and Midland’s unsightly oil rigs, is skipped over, and if you’ve ever been, you surely understand there’s no reason for FOMO.

According to Texas Highways, this Texas route is part of the longest train route in the U.S. Despite the name, this route begins in Chicago, but for the sake of the article, we’ll be sticking to the Texas portion, which consists of 16 stops in the Lone Star State.

In order from Northeast to Southwest, these are the Texas Eagle’s 16 stops that carve the state’s beautiful and varied landscapes:

• Marshall
• Longview
• Mineola
• Dallas
• Fort Worth
• Cleburne
• McGregor
• Temple
• Taylor
• Austin
• San Marcos
• San Antonio
• Del Rio
• Sanderson
• Alpine
• El Paso

8 destinations are in bold – these are the ones I believe truly stand out. With personal experience living in 6 of them, let’s delve into what makes each truly special.

3 Small Town Must-Visits

Mineola:

The first stop across the Texas state line is Marshall, hugging the Louisiana border. But it’s not Marshall or even Longview that should be your first stop-off; it’s Mineola.

From age 7 to 12, I called Mineola home. Believe me, not much has changed in 23 years, and that’s a good thing.

Mineola is a time capsule. The main drag is lined with inviting boutiques, antiquities, down-home eats, and even a classic theater.

To fuel up for the rest of your journey, the town’s longstanding staple, East Texas Burger Co., alone is worth de-boarding.

Cleburne:

Cleburne itself is a laid-back little town and a growing hub for outdoorsmen with scenic lakes and nature trails, but I believe it’s the neighboring town of Glen Rose that’s more of a draw.

We all know Jurassic Park is a fantasy, but Dinosaur Valley State Park is as close as it gets. Well, let’s see about the mammoth resurrections making waves lately…

Until then, a visit to Glen Rose’s popular state park is a thrill for all ages with dinosaur tracks preserved in dried-up riverbeds and a separate roaring attracting nearby.

Not to be confused with the state park, Dinosaur World offers dozens of animatronic dinosaurs and fossil digs — hold on to your butts!

San Marcos:

I went to college in San Marcos and didn’t graduate (woo! student loans!). Texas State University has made San Marcos a party town.

From the few brain cells I didn’t kill, I remember not only the all-night frat parties and anxiety-ridden report cards, but simply how pretty the vibrant blue San Marcos River is.

In fact, it’s 72 degrees all year long, perfect for tubing, fishing, even snorkeling since the waters are pristine.

Each Texas City Has Its Own Personality

Dallas-Fort Worth:

Despite being neighbors, Dallas and Fort Worth seem like worlds apart. Dallas is (shamelessly) more flashy, with upscale restaurants and high-end shopping, while Fort Worth has maintained its quintessential Texas roots as the ‘Gateway to the West’.

If you find yourself in Dallas, spend some time in the Deep Ellum and Bishop Arts districts for off-the-wall shops and eats. The Stockyards are a must-visit for anyone ready to explore Fort Worth, with daily cattle drives and old-timey steakhouses.

Austin-San Antonio:

Austin and San Antonio are located about an hour apart with aforementioned San Marcos, New Braunfels, and Buc-ee’s in between.

While Austin has changed more than any other Texas city over the past decade, it’s still a blast to visit, with its world-famous 6th Street, too many barbecue restaurants to name, and surprisingly stunning nature, like beautiful Lake Travis and Mount Bonnell.

San Antonio has changed a lot too, but the classics remain like The Alamo and community staples like Los Barrios, my favorite “Texas Mexican” restaurant. Get the chimichurri sauce and tell Diana I sent you!

There’s no city comparable to San Antonio, famously lined with the always buzzing River Walk, with the entire network of waterways winding 15 miles through the city.

Indianapolis and Monterrey have their own takes, but nothing will match San Antonio, especially with one of the most fun citywide festivals I’ve had the pleasure of attending, Fiesta.

El Paso:

Concluding my tour of Texas is El Paso, perhaps the state’s most underrated city. I lived in El Paso for a year and absolutely fell in love with the welcoming people, cheap sensational restaurants, vibrant downtown dotted with posh rooftops, and some of the best hikes I’ve taken in recent memory.

If you find yourself in El Paso, my advice is to arrive hungry, leave happy. Check out local favorite L & J Cafe.

Japan may be able to 3-D print a brand new train station at the drop of a hat, but Mexico is a little behind the times.

As such, a new airport is more than worthy of celebrating. It’s not every day that travelers have a new destination to travel to, especially one that is so close to home.

No, we’re not talking about Tulum. That’s old news.

Next on the docket is Riviera Nayarit, a 200-mile stretch of stunning coastline receiving a new international airport and best of all, the first-ever flight from the U.S. is already slated for launch this summer with more surely to follow suit.

But, there’s a caveat.

Mexico’s newest airport wasn’t built beachside like that of Cabo, Cancun or most recently, Tulum. Nope – it’s set in a historic city ready to celebrate is 500th birthday soon and seems to already be skipped over in favor of the lesser-known beach towns dotting the coast.

What’s the rush? A weekend getaway in fascinating Tepic, with its vast agave fields, buzzing plazas, and incredibly affordable stays, is the perfect start to Mexico’s rising tourism star, Riviera Nayarit.

One Of Mexico’s Most Authentic And Safe Destinations

Tepic, the capital city of Nayarit, is still relatively unknown. If you were to scour through travelers’ plans who plan to fly in, it’s likely you still wouldn’t see Tepic listed as more than flying in and getting out of dodge straight for a treasure trove of coastal gems nearby.

Mexico undoubtedly has some of the most beautiful coastlines in the world, but the same can be said of the country’s urban sprawls, which are beaming with magnetizing culture, authentic cuisine, and cobbled streets serving as portals to the past.

That’s Tepic. This practically unknown city offers those willing to give it a chance to experience real Mexico, the type of place even parts of Mexico City struggle to genuinely offer nowadays in the face of overtourism/gentrification concerns.

Tepic is the anti-Mexico City, not that one of the biggest cities in the world isn’t a wondrous labyrinth of sensory-overload experiences.

Here in Tepic you’ll find a refreshing take as there’s no Starbucks anchoring corner retail slots or inauthentic chains taking away from Mexico’s magic.

While it’s always wise to remain aware of your surroundings, the State of Nayarit currently holds a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution designation by the U.S. State Department with no specific mention of Tepic as a place to worry about safety.

But given how Tepic flies well below the radar, expect to stand out like a sore thumb, at least for now.

Cheap Stays & Surprising Attractions: Tepic Is A Delight To Explore

Don’t expect to burn through the points you’ve racked up in Tepic; many of the city’s hotels are independently owned or within a cluster of conglomerates most Americans aren’t cardholders.

Since the lone nonstop flight from U.S. grounds isn’t slated until July, let’s focus on the best summer deals.

3-star stays:

Now that you have your base, you’re probably wondering what there is there is other than to do what you would do in any other Mexican city. You know, find a centrally located restaurant patio, feast on local eats with an ice cold cerveza — there’s always that.

But, Tepic has some surprising attractions too. Despite it’s soon-to-be 500 year timeline of history, it’s not only eye-popping sites like Catedral de Tepic that are a draw, it’s Tepic astounding nature too.

Whether it be agave fields, staggering volcanoes, or Santa Maria del Oro, a vibrant lagoon set at the foothills of Tepic’s scenic mountain backdrop, this underrated city is practically an open invitation for outdoor adventures.

Plus, the weather doesn’t see unbearable temps like other parts of Mexico. Expect highs in the mid-80s practically year-round.

Volaris’ Groundbreaking Flight To Tepic

Tepic has been open to domestic travelers for quite some time, but international travelers, particularly Americans, should be extra excited this summer as popular Mexican airline Volaris recently announced the first-ever direct flight to Tepic from the U.S.

Scheduled to launch July 16, 2025, Volaris will fly from Los Angeles (LAX) to Tepic (TPQ). Tickets are already on sale on Volaris’ official website and painstakingly frustrating app.

Paris may well be Europe’s most sought-after destination, home to a plethora of iconic landmarks: the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe and its adjacent Champs-Élysées, Montmartre with the buskers and cobbled lanes… 

Do we really have to go through the list again?

There are many reasons why we love Paris, from the romantic cafe culture to the elegant architecture, but there are also many reasons why it can get on our nerves at times.

Crowds, hectic traffic, beret-clad Instagrammers whose sole purpose in life seems to be to take selfies by hand be Seine, and oh, the staggeringly high prices for accommodation…

But hey, it’s not like Paris alone is fully representative of French culture.

If you’re flying all this way for the beautiful sights, the Old World allure, and delicious cuisine, you should make sure you try Lyon next:

Could Lyon Be The Next Paris?

One of the oldest cities in France, founded as early as the Roman period, and boasting cultural wealth like no other, Lyon is perhaps the best-equipped French city to rival the capital in terms of beautiful sights.

Its Old Town, locally known as Vieux Lyon, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering an area of 427 hectares, 4 districts, and comprising over 2,000 years of a fascinating history—it’s also one of France’s most landmark-packed downtown areas.

It is split between three main areas: the medieval quarter, or Old Lyon, proper, the Croix-Rousse, and the hilly Fourvière.

Old Lyon is where you will find all of the city’s most notable edifices from the Middle Ages, including the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral, a Gothic ensemble best known for its vaulted ceilings and astronomical clock that gives Prague’s a run for its money.

Getting lost in its uphill, narrow cobbled streets, you will find Renaissance-era villas and hidden courtyards, and the higher you go, the more stunning is the view of the terracotta roofs and church spires at your feet

Croix-Rousse is the heart of Bohemian Lyon and an equally beautiful maze-like grid of stone-paved streets, just about wide enough for cars to drive slowly by.

It lines the Saône, a river cutting through the heart of Lyon, much like the Seine in Paris, and the promenade is particularly pleasant to stroll, as you admire the ornate architecture of the riverfront buildings.

Going up Croix-Rousse, you’ll see that its pathways are lined with bars, selling Lyon’s signature Beaujolais wines, traditional French brasseries, and bakeries where you can get fresh-out-the-oven pastries from only 1 euro—for the best croissant in town, check out Boulangerie du Palais.

For the third and final historic district, you’ll want to take the funicular, which rattles up overground rails, offering scenic vistas of the picture-perfect downtown.

Fourvière is home to the famous Notre Dame Basilica, a neo-Gothic gem often compared to Paris’ Sacre-Coeur: they’re both on a hilltop, overlooking their respective urban sprawls, and they were built around the same time.

In this area, you will also find Lyon’s very own Eiffel Tower, La Tour Métallique, a prominent feature of Des Hauteurs Park, except it even predates Eiffel’s masterpiece by three years.

If you’re wondering whether there’s anything left from Roman-era Lyon, you’ll be thrilled to learn that Fourvière has an ancient theater, built in the year 15 BC, and still hosting open-air concerts in summer.

Lyon Is Way Cheaper Than Paris!

Lyon is not only just as pretty as Paris, with several uncannily-similar attractions, it can be considerably cheaper and less crowded.

Paris has become a tourism playground in recent years, particularly after the popularity of TV shows like Emily in Paris, and the start of the beret-clad, ‘hold my giant €32 stunt croissant’ Instagrammer phenomenon.

Don’t get us wrong, it is very touristy—France remains the most visited country in the world, after all—but it’s definitely not on that Paris level of fame, for its own sake.

As we pointed out before, croissants here will cost you between €1 and €1.30, while a three-course meal in a local restaurant (let’s say you get some roasted camembert for starter, aligot for main, creme brulée for dessert, and a bottle of red wine) will cost you €38-40.

If you’re only going for the main dish and a glass of wine, then that’s a much-cheaper €18-21.

When it comes to accommodation, the average overnight rate in Lyon is a reasonable €106, or roughly $115, as per Budget Your Trip estimates.

If you’re wondering how Paris compares, that’s a wallet-wiping $326 on average.

Well, well, well… in a time when it seems we’re seeing more airline bankruptcies than start-ups, one new U.K.-based airline is going for gold and hoping to strike it rich with a bold endeavor.

Usually, an airline starts out slow and gains a loyal fan base, but Global Airlines is already venturing ‘across the pond’ to lure in American passengers, whizzing them through the skies to one of the U.K.’s most fascinating cities.

This is news to me as I follow airlines like a hawk, hoping to scoop up a great deal no matter whose name is painted on the side.

Lucky for East Coasters, they can do so too and even have a chance (ever so slightly as it may be) to score tickets before they go live.

If adventure is pulling at your heartstrings this spring (and why wouldn’t it be?), let’s dive into everything you need to know to be one of Global Airlines’ first passengers jetting off from New York to the timeless city of Glasgow, Scotland.

A Refreshing Take On Travel: Global Airlines Sounds Promising

While it may be tempting to rack up points with your favorite airline, sometimes cheating on them works out better, and you don’t have to be discreet about it.

Global Airlines is just starting out, but don’t let that deter you. You won’t be a guinea pig here.

Obtaining FAA clearance for American skies is quite an accomplishment, so just know you’re in good hands flying Global, especially on their new fleet of Airbus A380 jumbo jets.

Plus, there’s no Netflix doc on Airbus, ya know?

Starting an airline is a gargantuan task; that’s why you tend to see more going out of business, especially with the state of the world right now, where even notoriously cheap Spirit has had trouble staying afloat when travelers are scoping out ways to save money.

I gotta say, after taking a deep dive into Global Airlines origins, I’m equally jealous as I am impressed.

Founded in 2021 by ‘renowned travel personality and serial entrepreneur’, James Asquith, has accomplished my dream by visiting196 nations, so who better to know the ins and outs of air travel?

If you believe the hype, expect Global Airlines to try to disrupt the airline industry, but hopefully not the same way Ryanair has teased with standing-room only bookings.

Geared toward customer satisfaction, Global Airlines appears to have some undisclosed tricks up their sleeve to tackle ‘long security queues, late flights, lost luggage, inedible food and constant poor customer service’, according to their official website.

Time will tell. If they want capture American travelers’ hearts, maybe offer free checked bags, amirite?

For now, we do know Global will offer standard seating of the usual Economy, Business or First Class with surely more news to come about their flight experience.

Great Scot! Fly Direct to Scotland’s Largest City

According to The Scottish Sun, Global Airlines first transatlantic flight to Glasgow will launch May 19, 2025, departing from New York (JFK) to Glasgow (GLA) at 8 am.

Global has partnered with another lesser-known airline, Hi Fly, with a “wet-lease” agreement to make this happen.

Tickets are bit tricky right now, so don’t mark your calendars just yet. If you’re wanting to be one of the first to sign up, you need to register for their presale.

You can do so by clicking here. Personally, I recommend following their Facebook page for frequent updates.

There are no other direct routes from Glasgow to the U.S.

Why Visit Glasgow?

Glasgow is a perfect balance of old-world charm and eye-popping modernization.

One street beholds some of the most astounding architecture in the U.K, and turn a corner and you’ll see modern structures rising beside centuries-old landmarks and vibrant murals illuminating what otherwise might seem like drab streets.

That’s a stunning number in itself, considering that, prior to 2020, the concept of remote work was restricted almost exclusively to IT and certain niche fields of entrepreneurship.

The primary goal of these individuals is to be location-independent while earning a living, and many of them have an innate passion for traveling, and you’re likely to find them anywhere the sun is shining, and the cost of living is low, from Mexico, to Spain, to Thailand.

Be that as it may, an equally significant percentage of American nomads are quite happy city-hopping in their own neck of the woods and aren’t exactly keen on relocating to a foreign country.

One U.S. city in particular has in fact tripled its digital nomad population since 2019, charting ahead of long-time faves for tech-savvies like Austin and San Francisco.

As MBO Partners have concluded, Miami also scores well in monthly living costs: though it is the gateway to Latin America, by no means does it share the nether subcontinent’s cheap prices, but life here doesn’t have to be expensive to be enjoyed.

In fact, nomads will spend an average $2,200-$2,800 per month, in line with other Floridian cities, and tourism hotspots across America, and somewhat cheaper than the average for places like New York and Chicago.

Rent is truly the one thing that will nab the greatest chunk of your income, particularly if you’re keen on living in a trendy Wynwood, or a Bohemian Coconut Grove—on the other hand, grocery prices are reasonable, and there is plenty of affordable dining options around.

Another one of Miami’s undeniable appeal for American nomads is the fact it is a domestic destination boasting pleasant weather and white-sand beaches.

Americans don’t need to apply for a Digital Nomad Visa (commonly shortened to DNV), worry about entry and stay regulations, or for God’s sake, even have a passport when choosing Miami as their new temporary hub: this is the United States, after all!

Latin America, Europe and Asia are great, but have you tried qualifying for one of those hard-to-get DNVs, or living on constant visa-runs to avoid breaking immigration law?

Lastly, this is the closest you can get to being in a tropical location Stateside, as temperatures here vary from 62°F to 90°F during the year, and they rarely fall below 50°F.

Medellin is still a thriving city among expats, digital nomads, and general travelers wanting to experience the hype, but there are certainly notable concerns about visiting.

First, prices aren’t what they used to be, as Medellin has far surpassed its ‘hidden gem’ status.

Second, crime may be a fickle topic, but it’s always on the back of minds for those who explore the ‘City of Eternal Spring’ with frequent muggings, scams, and other petty crimes.

Third, with such an uprise in foreigners, Medellin has lost its sense of realness. Travelers love visiting places that feel autentico.

The capital city of Bogota belongs in the mix as well, but on the flip side, there’s a lesser-known city that should all but deter you from visiting Colombia.

Super cheap, more authentic, and broadly considered safe to visit, Medellin’s top alternative may be the gorgeous city of Bucaramanga, set in the foothills of the vast Andes.

Experience Real Colombia In The ‘City Of Parks’

Colombia is more than a nation of monikers with the likes of ‘City of Eternal Spring’ and ‘City of Parks’, but at least you know what you’re signing up for when visiting.

In Bucaramanga’s case, as you can imagine, it’s great to enjoy the outdoors while surrounded by all the urban delights this underrated city brings.

Similar to Medellin, Bucaramanga is nestled in a bowl-like setting, backdropped by rolling hills and towering mountains that all but call you to get out and explore.

To entice you even more, Bucaramanga is home to Chicamocha National Park (a.k.a. “Panachi”), a highly rated park where you can hike amongst jaw-dropping canyons or ride the cable car for elevated views.

But really ‘City of Parks’ is more aligned with urban parks to get a sense of daily life here through sights, sounds, and flavors of the city.

Bosque Encantado Metropolitan Park and Morrorico Park both offer unmatched skyline views, while Santander Park is centrally located, making a great base to explore historic buildings, bustling empanada-laden markets, and great eats.

Start your day taking a stroll with world-renowned Colombian coffee in a city where you never know what weird and wonderful surprises you’ll stumble upon, such as giant ant sculptures fit for apple bottom jeans.

‘Boots with the fur’ might be a little much, though, in 80-degree temps throughout the year.

Bucaramanga Is Safer And Super Cheap

One could argue Bucaramanga is what Medellin used to be—a sunny, green, mountainous city oozing history, culture, and natural beauty. However, mainstream travelers don’t know about it because it’s overshadowed by the plethora of other household names.

While Medellin’s well-documented problems are their own to solve, Bucaramanga doesn’t have soaring prices and tourist scams – at least not yet.

According to International Living, Colombia’s mid-sized cities are the ultimate places to save some serious cash in your travels.

Bucaramanga has nearly 3 million fewer residents, but it still feels like a large city with timeless charm and an overall cultural ‘wow’ factor.

Dining out can be as cheap as you’d like, depending on whether you want a quick street meal or a high-end restaurant. For example, an authentic lunch with a drink included costs about $5 on average.

Hotels won’t break the bank either. Many boutique hotels cost under $30, while leveling up to 4 stars at such places as Hotel Internacional La Triada is just a smidge more; not to mention its great location near the magnificent Catedral de la Sagrada Familia and Santander Park.

Getting around is the cheapest of all by taking the Metrolinea at approximately 70 cents per ride.

Bucaramanga’s Digital Nomad Appeal

Just as Medellin was once just any ordinary city, it’s arguably more well known now as an expat/digital nomad haven, more so than in the wild times of Pablo Escobar’s reign.

Bucaramanga has everything digital nomads could want except an already thriving community of likeminded travelers.

But, that’s destined to change. With a buzzing cafe culture, easy-to-obtain digital nomad visa and affordable cost of living across the board, why not give Bucaramanga chance?

International Living also provided clearcut examples of why digital nomads will be enticed to move here:

• Healthcare – Monthly plans under $50
• Food – $5 for a nice lunch
• Transit – $0.70 bus rides, $3 taxis, and Uber is in service

Winding navigable canals, picturesque fondamenti lined with pastel-hue buildings, and impossibly narrow alleys that lead to hidden piazzas with ornate fountains… there’s many a reason why you should visit the floating city of Venice.

At the same time, there are many why you should avoid it altogether:

Think of the jaw-dropping prices, with hotels in the historic center averaging $251 a night, or the overcrowding––and by that, we mean you simply can’t walk around the historic center without brushing shoulders with strangers.

That’s without factoring in the blatant anti-tourism policies, from the restriction of short-term rentals, to the introduction of a new ticketing system for day trippers.

Fortunately for crowd-wary, budget-conscious travelers, there’s a lesser-known Venice dupe all the way out west in Portugal, also traversed by a grand canal and famous for its richly-decorated gondolas:

Did You Know There Even Is A Portuguese Venice?

Aveiro boasts a high concentration of Art Nouveau architecture, skinny edifices draped in colorful tiles, and magnificent Baroque churches, but then again, this could be used to describe any other Portuguese city.

Its distinctive feature is the fact that it’s built on a lagoon, connected to the Atlantic Ocean by means of passing waterways, and it’s essentially born out of seaweed harvesting:

As the settlement grew over the centuries, and Aveiro’s exports grew bigger, a number of water-filled passageways were constructed to provide workers with easier access, from their place of residence to the harvesting hotspots.

These manmade canals are precisely why Aveiro is known as the ‘Portuguese Venice‘.

How Do Aveiro And Venice Compare?

Now, we won’t lie to you and tell you that’s a perfect comparison: there’s truly no other city like Venice in the world, built on a sheltered lagoon over oak-pile reinforced swamp isles and absent of streets and wheeled traffic.

Aveiro has navigable canals, but traffic runs alongside them, and unlike Venice, which has too many of those to count, its Portuguese equivalent has three main waterways.

Though they are not as numerous, but one could argue they’re equally scenic, especially with the colorful barcos moliceiros, the Portuguese gondolas, that travel around them––you can even take a canal tour for as cheap as $15.94.

Shall we remind you again how much those will cost you in the actual Venice?

Additionally, Aveiro rarely ever feels crowded, except for a handful of peak summer days, and even then, most of the visitors hail from other parts of Portugal or just neighboring Spain:

It’s yet to catch the gaze of most prying Instagrammers who are looking for the next European hidden gem or guided tour.

Other than charming canals and a timeless townscape, Aveiro is popular for its landmark cathedral, featuring a whitewashed bell tower, and delicious cuisine:

Great Food At Cheap Prices

It is the birthplace of ovos moles, a well-loved Portuguese sweet treat rivaling the world-renowned pastel de nata, made with pure egg yolks and sugar only––if you’re asking us, the best ones are served at this bakery called M1882, open e very day except Sunday.

Unless you’re vegan, make sure you add Tasquinha do Leitao to your list of restaurants to check out: they have the best roasted suckling pigs in town, presented with orange slices, and prices are more than reasonable.

Expect to pay around $14-16 for a main dish and a glass of local wine.

For sea beam and the signature Portuguese salted codfish bathed in olive oil and accompanied with baby potatoes, Necas’ House is the place to go, and if seafood’s the way to your heart, you can’t leave Aveiro without sampling some of Palhuça’s market-sourced squid and prawns.

Where To Stay In Aveiro This Spring

Looking for somewhere to stay in the heart of the Old Town, within walking distance to both the canal front and the train station?

The aptly named Veneza Hotel has nightly rates starting from an acceptable $72 this April, and in case you don’t mind splurging a little—if $104-a-night can even be considered a splurge at all—the 4-star, canal-lining Hotel Aveiro Palace is centrally located near all the best restaurants and photo spots.

It’s also a 10-minute drive from Barra and Costa Nova, two sandy beaches on the Atlantic that Aveiro locals commonly escape to in the balmy Portuguese spring.

The cheapest listing, however, is a 3-star economy room at Hotel Imperial, that should set you back by an almost-negligible $47 per night––no prepayment needed, free cancellation, and with an option to add breakfast for only $8 more on Booking.com.

Bottomline

On average, a weekend trip to Aveiro will run you up $316 as a solo traveler, as per Budget Your Trip estimates, placing it in the mid-range to cheap bracket.

For comparison, the same website indicates that a three-night stint in Venice is an eye-watering $869, and we’re inclined to believe them, based on hotel rates alone and the price of food, museums, and sightseeing tours.

Naturally, prices can widely vary depending on your profile as a traveler, but there’s no denying Aveiro is a much-better bargain than its famous Italian sister.

The closest airport to Aveiro is Porto International (OPO), some 41 miles north, hosting flights from Newark (EWR) and Boston (BOS).

From Porto, there are multiple train and bus connections to Aveiro daily, for as cheap as $7 one-way.

As Portland has become a trendy hotspot in recent years, the rest of Maine is essentially the last frontier of the East Coast.

Maine tourists don’t typically venture beyond Portland, with the exception of Acadia, one of America’s prettiest National Parks.

Ahh, never mind.

Not only is this hidden gem still exuding the charm of a bygone era, standing the test of time, but it beholds numerous secret islands and a treasure trove of maritime history and coastal charm waiting to be (re)discovered.

Welcome To Kittery, Maine: The East Coast’s Best Kept Secret

Ever heard of Kittery? Unless you’re from the region, likely, you haven’t. With Portland hogging Maine’s travel scene, it’s completely understandable.

But Kittery has existed for hundreds of years, and gatekeepers have done a phenomenal job of remaining tight-lipped about one of the East Coast’s best-kept secrets.

Being a town of only 10,000 residents, there’s no commercial airport here, but there is in neighboring Portsmouth, New Hampshire, another charming coastal town in its own right with connecting flights from budget airlines, Breeze and Allegiant, from popular hubs such as Orlando (MCO).

Otherwise, Boston International Airport (BOS) is only an hour away and has a lot more options.

Kittery has a fascinating timeline spanning centuries from formerly being named Amiciskeag by Native Americans years before tribes engaged in armed conflicts with French and English settlers for rights to the land, and we all know how that ultimately turned out…

Furthermore, what may seem like a tall tale is actually true. Pirates (yes, real-life pirates!) like infamous Blackbeard, once traversed Kittery’s isles, so you may want to bring a metal detector along as there have long been rumors of lost treasure left behind.

As Kittery stands today, you can’t help but notice the aesthetics of seafarer charm and the palpable sense of history throughout town, with sites like Fort McClary, a military fort used as far back as the Revolutionary War.

But even with all the historical significance, don’t expect Kittery to be a boring glimpse into the past.

Downtown (a.k.a. Kittery Foreside) has been transformed with quirky artisan shops, upscale cafes serving craft coffee concoctions, and a surging food scene leaving one travel guide to essentially describe Kittery as a mini Brooklyn.

Kittery’s Secret Islands: Barbecue, Beaches, And Waterfront Stays

Some islands of Kittery’s scenic shorelines are off-limits for tourism hence the secret. The good news is there’s plenty of islands nobody ever seems to talk about that make for awesome spring and summer getaways.

Let’s start with Gerrish Island. Visit Fort Foster Park for only $25, another historical site, but this one boasts small tranquil beaches and sweeping coastal scenery, including quintessential lighthouses.

Your best bet for the full Gerrish Island experience is to book a vacation rental on Vrbo or Airbnb since public access is closed (except for Fort Foster).

Next up is the Isle of Shoals, a series of islands spanning across state lines but featuring fun-to-say Smuttynose Island and Appledore Island on the Maine side of the dividing line.

To get here, though, you’ll need to cross over to Portsmouth and hob aboard a boat from Isle of Shoals Steamboat Company.

Unfortunately, they leave us hanging with the dreaded “coming soon” message on their calendar, but as the weather gets warmer, it’s all but certain they’ll restart service sooner rather than later.

Circling back toward town, there’s a pair of islands worth visiting: Badger Island (Maine) and New Castle (New Hampshire).

Badger is connected by bridge, so you can drive here, and boasts great eats like local favorite Ore Nell’s Barbecue served ‘Central Texas style’, while New Castle offers a great selection of waterfront hotels like Wentworth by the Sea with rave reviews claiming it’s a ‘charming historic hotel with a water view’ and has ‘lovely clean rooms antique style’.

Cheaper Than Portland

Maybe I’m in an exclusive club, but when I visited Portland, I was sticker-shocked by hotel prices. In fact, it’s the only city I’ve chosen to stay in a Motel 6 to save money.

Worst of all, they didn’t leave the light on for me! What a sham!

Portland has become so trendy, there’s no way I’m the only one noticing the city’s high prices whether it be top-rated lobster rolls or hotel rooms.

Travelers don’t have to worry about that in Kittery. In fact, one of its claims to fame, besides being Maine’s oldest city, is its shopping.

East Coast residents from all over make day trips to shop ’til they drop at the Kittery Outlets. Affordable prices don’t stop there, though.

Stay at the revamped Kittery Inn & Suites for just $64 this spring or The Water Street Inn, holding a perfect 5.0 Google rating, for $128.

Last but not least, it’s a must to have lobster, right? Dave’s Maine Cafe has lobster rolls for just $18!
