Add Thailand to the list for overtourism. Europe may hog the spotlight with their global gripes demanding to have their beloved hometowns back, but Thailand is no stranger to busy streets and jam-packed beaches either.

Bangkok is and always will be a bustling city, but what may be surprising is the fact Phuket was recently crowned the most overcrowded tourist destination in the world.

The good news is Thailand is home to well over 1,000 islands, but there’s one in particular ready to embrace more tourists – and you’ve probably never heard of it.

While Koh Samui has also been thrown into the mix of no-go destinations, Koh Kood is the perfect alternative for crowd-free beaches and lavish resorts.

Plus, CNN and Thrillist just featured this turquoise paradise as one of Thailand’s most breathtaking beaches to avoid the crowds.

Reaching Koh Kood

You might be thinking to yourself, “where in the world is Koh Kood?”. Don’t worry; it’s not a treacherous journey.

While it’s certainly not as easily connected as Phuket or Koh Samui, if it was, it could easily have the same overtourism problems as Thailand’s most popular islands.

But, with no airport and few ferry lines, Koh Kood has proudly held on to its ‘hidden gem’ status, a feat not easily done in this day and age of TikTokers and Instagrammers seemingly turning over every stone.

Like most adventures in Thailand, they start in Bangkok. From here, you’ll need to make your way to Trat, ideally by bus or by a quick flight (only served by Bangkok Airways).

Of course, you could also make a pit stop in Pattaya, Thailand’s revamped beach city, also embracing more tourists.

Any way you slice it, the stopping point is Trat, where you’ll hop aboard a couple of ferry or speedboat options or Boonsiri’s high-speed catamaran.

All are a straight shot to Koh Kood’s virtually untouched shores, so pristine it won’t seem real.

But first, Thai is a tough language. Koh Kood is also known as Koh Kut, so be mindful when choosing your transportation.

Koh Kood’s Stunning Nature: Visit One Of Thailand’s Prettiest Beaches

Thrillist just unveiled the ‘Best beaches in Thailand’, including one drop-dead gorgeous beach illuminating Koh Kood’s gleaming coasts.

Standing in good company between Pattaya, Phuket, and Krabi, among other lesser-known islands, sits Koh Kood’s Tha Pho Beach.

Here, you’ll find a real-life dream for pure serenity and some of the most photo-worthy shores in all of Thailand.

Thrillist highlights the beach’s soft ‘white sand’, ‘tranquil turquoise waters’, and a ‘thriving underwater ecosystem’ boasting an array of wildlife from barracudas to sea turtles, so prepare to go snorkeling!

While you’ll surely want to stick around Tra Pho a while soaking up every second you can, Koh Kood offers a multitude of jaw-dropping beaches to enjoy – many lined with swings and hammocks.

Don’t sleep on the island’s lush jungles either, home to numerous flowing waterfalls crashing down into serene swimming holes.

If you time it right, you can have a private oasis in the middle of the jungle since tourists aren’t exactly flocking to Koh Kood like, say, Phuket.

Another hidden gem is what’s known as the Makka Tree. This 500-year-old tree is one of the most popular landmarks on the island for photo ops.

Who Needs Phuket When You Have Koh Kood’s Lavish Resorts?

Phuket may top many-a bucket lists around the globe, but there are plenty of postcard-perfect beaches to splurge on ritzy resorts across Thailand.

Koh Kood may be off the radar for most, but the plus side is there are already many resorts to choose from to cap off an epic vacation.

You may need to scrounge your sofa for leftover change to scrape up enough dough to book a room at Koh Kood’s nicest resort, 5-star Soneva Kiri, running upwards of $1,500 per night.

However, there are many other grand stays along some of Thailand’s most scenic shores, like the easy-to-remember Koh Kood Resort or Tinkerbell Resort.

When you choose your next beach escape, odds are you’ll be looking where to spend blissful beach days in Mexico or the Caribbean.

One Caribbean nation that has soared to new heights in terms of tourism is the Dominican Republic.

Even the country’s cultural cities have become more popular, like Santiago de los Caballeros and the sprawling capital, Santo Domingo.

Near both cultural hubs are some of the most pristine beach resort towns you’ll find along Caribbean shores.

One that is super easy to reach and continues to thrive is La Romana, home to lavish resorts and stunning beaches.

Move Aside Punta Cana! La Romana Is The Place To Be

As someone who just spent 5 days at a luxe resort in Punta Cana, I can easily compare apples to apples since I also spent some time in La Romana.

If you’ve done any vacation planning along the East Coast or Caribbean, surely you know it’s sargassum season.

Sargassum is an unsightly brown algae that invades coastlines for miles and miles ruining your postcard-worthy photo-ops.

Punta Cana, including world-renowned Bavaro Beach, was teeming with icky piles of sargassum baking in the sun, creating not only an eyesore, but an unpleasant odor and constant annoyances trying to swim in the crystal clear waters.

Taking a day trip to La Romana was like flipping a switch from an okay beach vacation to the dreamy paradise you envision when splurging on a Caribbean getaway.

Perfect Conditions For The Ultimate Beach Escape

Not a flake of sargassum was spotted when I swam in various spots throughout the La Romana region.

Setting sail on a Catamaran from Bayahibe, there were stops away from shore to swim and snorkel.

Water conditions were absolutely perfect with warm temperatures and limpid visibility – no seaweed or trash in sight.

Like Zac Brown said, the ‘Only worry in the world is the tide gonna reach my chair’, the only worry here is stepping on Starfish as they’re a very protected and encouraged by tour guides not to touch.

The only portion not suitable for water activity are the ports of Bayahibe and Isla Saona, where the water is still very clear, but you will need flip-flops to avoid cutting your feet on jagged rocks.

Stunning Tropical Islands

Within close distance from the small resort town of La Romana lies a pair of stunning islands – Isla Saona, and Isla Catalina.

While I can’t speak to personal experience with the latter, tourists have left rave reviews with comments like, ‘Saona Island gets all the cred but this was an awesome excursion’.

Home to gorgeous beaches clear waters for snorkeling and diving, this short journey to the island is definitely worth checking out.

I went to Isla Saona. Beyond simply relaxing with endless poolside pinã coladas, this jaw-dropping island was the highlight of my Dominican vacation.

You are instantly welcomed by towering palm trees and sandy pathways giving access to what feels like secret beaches, and it was some of the clearest water I’ve ever swam in.

No sargassum, jellyfish, garbage, stingrays – nope, just picture-perfect blue waters and white sand.

La Romana’s Lavish Resorts

Punta Cana is great, but everyone wants to be here.

The same way Cancun is an awesome vacation spot since everyone knows about, that’s not to say you won’t have an awesome time in Puerto Escondido.

The same goes for Punta Cana and La Romana. The latter is a very popular resort town but doesn’t hold the same recognition.

Vacationers can come here expecting to have the time of their lives the same as you would in Punta Cana, but the experience may be even better.

With high-end all-inclusive resorts such as Hilton, Dreams, and Iberostar, you can’t go wrong, especially since the beaches don’t find themselves in the path of massive seaweed invasions.

Set on the beautiful shores of the Atlantic lies a lesser-known beach town conveniently located between the fun-filled city of Orlando and the glitz and glamour of Palm Beach.

Home to luxe beach resorts along gorgeous waters, the spotlight is beginning to shine brighter as it forges its path, emerging as Florida’s new “it” destination.

To back up this claim, one budget airline is betting big on this sunny destination this summer, holding monopoly status as the only carrier serving this pint-sized airport…for now.

The town isn’t much bigger, but what vacationers get in return proves once and for all size doesn’t matter.

Savings + luxury = the perfect vacation if you ask me!

With new direct flights and lavish resorts, Vero Beach is destined to become Florida’s new vacation hotspot.

Florida’s Hidden Gem: Vero Beach Is Late To The Party

There are a plethora of beaches along the Atlantic in neighboring states well worth visiting, but Florida is always the leader of the pack.

Even Orlando, an inland city an hour away from the nearest beach, sees hordes of tourists, so it’s not all about the beaches.

In Vero Beach, however, there are 26 miles of gorgeous coastline with far fewer tourists than Orlando, Miami, all the Caribbean-esque beaches near Tampa, and any other trendy beach town your mind can muster.

In other words, Vero Beach is late to the party, but better to arrive fashionably late than to never show up at all.

Vero Beach does show up dressed to impress with vivid blues and greens and a mix of soft white or golden sand, depending on where you are along the shoreline.

This small, inviting beach town is laying down its welcome mat in preparation for more tourists despite Vero Beach Regional Airport (VRB) not having much success.

Multiple airlines ceased operations over the years, to no fault or lack of appeal of Vero. I mean, have you heard of Eastern Air Lines? Not exactly a household name…

Breeze Airways, one of America’s newest low-cost carriers, plans to change that. And so far, so good.

In fact, it’s the only airline that serves VRB at all.

Breeze’s 5 Routes To Vero Beach

East Coasters get first dibs taking a crack at Vero Beach. Launching their first VRB flight in early 2023, the network has grown evermore to 5 routes thus far.

Obviously, Vero Beach has been a hit, unlike other budget airlines that dip their toes in the water too quickly only to pull out at the drop of a hat. (*cough, cough. Frontier…)

The latest was announced last week—a nonstop flight from Newburgh, NY (SWF), one of New York City’s handful of alternative airports.

Speaking of, Long Island/Islip (ISP) and White Plains (HPN) also serve VRB.

That leaves Providence, Rhode Island (PVD) and Hartford, Connecticut (BDL) to round out the 5 routes.

Breeze offers promotions frequently, including the new Newburgh – Vero Beach route on sale right now as low as $99 the week it launches November 21, 2024.

Lavish Beach Resorts Without The Crowds

Sure, you could spend your paycheck at Disney World or splurge on the finer things in life in Palm Beach, but about half between lies Vero Beach – typically more affordable, yet still a luxurious beach vacation spot.

Disney World can be a blast, but your bank account will take a pounding! Try sticking to a $250 per day budget, especially with kiddos—good luck!

But did you know Vero Beach actually makes for the perfect Disney World alternative? That’s right.

You may not be aware of Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, where rooms average a smidge over $250 per day.

Rather than have the soundtrack to your life of screaming roller-coaster-riding kids all day, what about a Disney hotel nestled upon an idyllic beach on sea turtle nesting grounds?

Talk about A Whole New World…

To level up even more, especially without the kiddos, name-brand resorts such as the posh Kimpton Vero Beach Hotel & Spa got you covered, among other paradisal beachfront stays:

• Costa d’Este Beach Resort & Spa
• The Caribbean Court Boutique Hotel
• Prestige Hotel Vero Beach

Dolphins, Manatees, And Birds, Oh My!

Lastly, vacationers in Vero Beach would be doing themselves a disservice by not visiting the surrounding Indian River Lagoon.

Outdoor enthusiasts will love renting a paddleboard or kayak along the scenic waterways, which are teeming with opportunities to spot wildlife, especially dolphins, manatees, and a variety of bird species.

For those who don’t want to put in work on vacation (understandably so!), fun boat tours are also an option ranging from tiki boats to private guides.

San Diego is known for having that quintessential SoCal vibe we’ve all seen in the movies.

While ‘America’s Finest City’ is just that – a fine city – there are ample scenic beach towns dotting the seemingly endless coastline filled with your typical dude-bro surfers and skateboarders.

But don’t fret! You can easily escape the ‘bruh’ this and ‘bruh’ that and hand signals with their pinky and thumb extended.

There are more ways to hang loose than catching waves and grinding handrails.

Most tourists set their sights for San Diego’s prime beachside real estate, but those who do are actually doing themselves a disservice by missing out on a slice of Mediterranean paradise away from the all-but-guaranteed packed beaches. (Although, crowds tend to dwindle down in fall)

Perhaps you’ve heard of Del Mar, a ritzy little beach town roughly 20 minutes from San Diego proper where celeb sightings are common and the average home costs $2.725 million – yes, that’s not a typo.

The average traveler’s beach home dreams may come to a screeching halt here, but splurging on a well-deserved vacation should never be out of the question.

Nestled inland amongst rolling hills and vast canyons lies the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, a lavish 5-star hotel oozing Mediterranean vibes, where adults can blissfully recharge by day, and indulge in Southern California’s only 3-star Michelin restaurant by night.

As a recent guest, I can’t recommend staying here enough. And if you must go to the beach, Del Mar’s pristine beaches are less than 15 minutes away.

No Passport Needed: Let The Mediterranean Come To You

Upon arriving, you’re glued to Fairmont Grand’s pure elegance as if every throw pillow, every cocktail glass, and every glistening chandelier are meticulously placed to exude class and luxury at every turn.

Fairmont Grand describes themselves on their website as a ‘Mediterranean estate’, which is certainly an understatement feeling more reminiscent of San Diego’s version of the Alhambra.

I walked the entire grounds multiple times, and while not classified as a “resort” per se, many aspects feel like one.

Home to multiple pools, a globally renowned golf course, and world-class 5-star spa honored by Forbes, this is the ultimate place to unwind all without even feeling like you’re in San Diego; at least how it’s often portrayed.

I booked a King Room overlooking the adults-only pool (more to come on that!) and was delighted to see how spacious it was. Even 5-star hotels can skimp on breathing room from time to time, but not here!

The bathroom alone felt bigger than my whole apartment and the gold-accented European-style soaking tub was the icing on the cake.

Not to mention, the mattress was truly heavenly, the complimentary coffee better than Starbucks, and the secluded balcony was surprisingly peaceful for a poolside room.

I couldn’t have asked for a better way to the cap the day than enjoying the cool evening breeze on the patio while catching up on reading and writing articles for you on their speedy wifi (you’re welcome!).

A Family-Friendly Hotel With A Private Haven For Adults

Remember in Dumb and Dumber when Lloyd attempted to make the ‘most annoying sound in the world’?

Well, for some of us, it’s whatever Jim Carrey’s dissonant vocal cords blurted out, and for others, like me, it’s the sound of screaming children…or my ex’s weird TikToks, but that’s a different story…

Kids can be a lot of fun and deserve a vacation like anyone else, but adults-only pools are a whole other level of peace, amirite?

Fairmont Grand Del Mar boasts 4 heated pools, but the 1 adults-only pool is free of kids running rampant and miserable parents realizing they need another vacation while on vacation.

Plus, the service was top notch from setting up my cushy lounge chair, offering complimentary sunscreen, to serving an ice cold Mexican cerveza poolside.

Accompanied by an equally blissful secluded hot tub, the adults-only pool lived up to the name. I’ve been to other hotels where staff turn a blind eye to obviously obnoxious teenagers invading my quiet zone, but this was truly an adults-only haven.

Although, most impressive was how spotlessly clean the entire hotel was – a rarity for a kid-friendly and pet-friendly stay.

Whether You Rest Your Head Here Or Not, You Must Eat Here!

San Diego is one of the best foodie destinations in America, but dining at Fairmount Grand levels up your tastebuds.

Home to Addison, Southern California’s only 3-star Michelin restaurant, along with Amaya, a fabulous restaurant where Paris meets SoCal, you can’t go wrong.

Although, Addison’s twilight views are arguably as grand as their menus. Diner be warned, though, Addison is so sought-after you will need book a reservation well in advance, which can be done here on OpenTable.

The nearest open availability I could find is over a month away for a late 9pm dinner, for example.

Amaya, however, is not at all a bad alternative, where I had an incredible dinner to remember from savory appetizers like the Burgandy Escargot Vol Au Vent to locally sourced wine for dessert – yeah, you read that right.

The star of the show was the ‘Chef’s Special’, not even listed on the already impressive menu. So impressive in fact, the waiter had to make 4 trips before we decided what we wanted to order.

The imported Dover Sole was divine and cooked to perfection, so special thanks to our friendly, knowledgeable server, Ignacio, for the recommendation!

My girlfriend and I couldn’t stop raving about how amazing our meal was as we strolled through the beautiful grounds with a post-meal glass of wine in hand.

Their wine selection was extensive and so well incorporated with their impeccable cuisine that we opted for another round over dessert since Amaya allows guests to take wine to-go.

See? ‘Adulting’ really is another level here!

Tip: if ordering the Steak Tartare, ask for the ‘parmesan espuma’ on the side for the perfect bite paired with quite possibly the best bread I’ve ever had!

Horsing Around: Fairmont‘s Fun Activities

Fairmont Grand is a popular golf getaway, but there’s far more to do than hit the links. However, if you’re not avid golfer and would like to learn, clinics are offered for only $50 on Friday and Saturday.

After pigging out at Amaya, a Monday morning yoga sesh was out of the question for me, so I opted for a pool day.

On Tuesday, though, I made a visit the hotel’s very own Equestrian Center, which if you know anything about Del Mar, should be no surprise.

Del Mar is the ‘Kentucky Derby’ of San Diego, home to the very popular Del Mar Racetrack.

Fairmont Grand offers Equestrian Trail Rides, Pony Rides, along with the chance to ‘Feed the Horses‘ on Tuesdays; some of which are retired racehorses. Needless to say, they’re absolutely gorgeous animals!

Behind the Equestrian Center is a trailhead of hiking trails along the golf course, winding through open canyons for some terrific views of the surrounding scenery – the perfect way to start your day with a complimentary cup of coffee from your room, and best of all, hiking is free!
