Colombia – a nation pulsating with vibrant culture, stunning Andean landscapes, lush coffee regions, and Caribbean coastlines – continues to capture the imagination of travelers worldwide. From the historic streets of Cartagena to the bustling energy of Bogotá and the modern vibe of Medellin, its appeal is undeniable. However, amidst this allure, the U.S. State Department has issued an updated Travel Advisory, urging potential visitors to weigh the risks carefully.  

On April 17, 2025, the State Department reissued its advisory for Colombia, maintaining the country at an overall Level 3: Reconsider Travel. This level sits just below the most severe warning, Level 4: Do Not Travel. A Level 3 advisory doesn’t mean Americans cannot go, but it signals serious risks to safety and security that warrant careful consideration before booking that ticket.  

Based on over 20 trips to Medellin within the last four years, I can sincerely attest to the importance of heeding official travel warnings. Although I have personally been fortunate enough to avoid major incidents, reports of robberies targeting foreign tourists are pervasive and occur almost daily. Spending even a short time browsing Medellin expat Facebook group offers a realistic understanding of the situation on the ground.

Why the Caution? Understanding the Risks

The advisory flags several major concerns across Colombia: crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping. ^{Violent crime isn’t isolated to specific areas; incidents like murder, assault, and armed robbery are unfortunately common in many parts of the country. Organized crime groups are active, engaging in extortion, robbery, and kidnapping. Drive-by snatchings of phones and valuables by thieves on motorcycles are also a frequent hazard, particularly targeting those displaying signs of wealth like expensive watches or jewelry.}  

Terrorist groups, including dissident factions that refused to demobilize after peace agreements and organizations like the National Liberation Army (ELN), still operate and pose a threat. ^{They may attack with little warning, targeting locations frequented by tourists, transportation hubs, markets, government facilities, and other public areas.}  

Furthermore, civil unrest is a factor. Political demonstrations occur regularly and can shut down roads and highways unexpectedly, disrupting travel and sometimes turning violent.

“Do Not Travel” Zones: High-Risk Areas

While the country overall is Level 3, the State Department strongly advises against all travel (Level 4) to specific regions due to extreme danger:

1. Arauca, Cauca (excluding the city of Popayán), and Norte de Santander departments: These areas face significant threats from both crime and terrorism. Violent crime is particularly prevalent.
2. The Colombia-Venezuela border region: This zone is flagged for high levels of crime, kidnapping, potential conflict between armed groups, and the risk of accidental crossing into Venezuela, which could lead to detention.  

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to citizens in these Level 4 areas, and official U.S. personnel face severe travel restrictions there.  

A Specific Danger: Dating App Risks, Especially in Medellin

Beyond the general advisory, a critical security alert issued previously by the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá remains highly relevant, especially for visitors to major cities like Medellin, Cartagena, and Bogotá. Criminals are increasingly using online dating applications (like Tinder, Bumble, Grindr, and others) to lure victims, particularly foreigners.  

The pattern often involves matching with someone online and agreeing to meet at a public place like a bar or restaurant, or sometimes at the victim’s hotel or residence. Criminals, sometimes working in teams, then use drugs to incapacitate their victims – Scopolamine (also known as “Devil’s Breath”) is frequently used, as it can render a person unconscious and induce amnesia. Once drugged, victims are robbed of their belongings, including phones, wallets, bank cards, and computers. Tragically, numerous incidents involving U.S. citizens being drugged, robbed, and even killed after meeting someone via a dating app have been reported. The Embassy noted a significant spike in thefts and violent deaths involving foreign visitors in Medellin in 2023 and 2024, many linked to these dating app encounters and potential drugging or overdose scenarios.  

Traveling Smarter and Safer

If you decide to travel to Colombia despite the Level 3 advisory:

• Be Informed: Read the full Travel Advisory and Country Information page on the State Department website. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for alerts and easier location in emergencies.  
• Stay Aware: Maintain constant situational awareness. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas. Keep a low profile – avoid displaying cash or expensive jewelry.
• Transportation: Do not hail taxis on the street. Use reputable dispatch services or vehicle-for-hire apps. U.S. government employees are prohibited from using street taxis.  
• Dating Apps: Exercise extreme caution. If meeting someone new, do so only in very public places for initial encounters. Inform a friend or family member of your plans, who you are meeting, and which app you used. Never leave drinks or food unattended. Be wary of inviting strangers to your accommodation.
• Demonstrations: Avoid all protests and large crowds, as they can turn violent without warning. Monitor local media.  
• Have a Plan: Prepare for emergency situations and ensure you have adequate travel insurance covering medical evacuation.

Colombia offers incredible experiences, but the current security landscape demands caution. By understanding the risks outlined by the State Department and taking proactive safety measures, travelers can make more informed decisions to protect themselves while exploring this captivating country.

Oh boy! It appears at least one budget airline smells blood in the water as Southwest just put the kibosh on their long-standing policy of “bags fly free”.

One might think when that shocking domino fell, it would kickstart a trickle-down fee-economics effect, but so far, so good for travelers’ wallets.

Time will tell if Southwest loyalists will stick around, but one competitor has decided to fill the gap by putting their well-documented strict (and controversial) baggage policies behind them, allowing travelers to check bags for free…at least for the summer.

Frontier Airlines, who were recently under public scrutiny for admitting to Senate they were compensating gate agents to target passengers’ bag sizes, resulting in extra fees or denied boarding, have now turned a corner.

According to a press release, not only will Frontier be offering free checked bags, but a whole bunch of other freebies that just might lure travelers back in to trust their airline.

“At the end of the day, travelers just want to be valued”. “We’re bringing back the things people love about flying – free bags, free seat selection, and flexibility – without the extra fees. No games, just great value.”- Barry Biffle, CEO, Frontier Airlines

Frontier’s Summer Of Freebies

Who could’ve seen this coming? The most notoriously stringent budget airline in the States is showing some grace.

Of course, one has the right to question if it’s in good faith or simply a marketing ploy, given how surprising Southwest’s sudden shift in policies was last week.

Regardless, every Frontier traveler flying from today through August 18 has the chance to score some major freebies.

So, let’s break this down.

Free Economy Bundle:

Any avid budget traveler knows most airlines in this category have tiers to choose from, and that’s where most make the mistake of not reading the fine print.

For the time being, you won’t have to as all travelers will receive the perks of Frontier’s Economy Bundle:

• Free carry-on bag (in addition to ‘Personal Item’)
• Free seat selection
• Free flight changes

One Very Important Detail: Don’t Miss The Deadline

Again, every time you book a trip with a budget airline, reading the fine print is one of the most important things you can do to ensure your budget flight indeed remains a budget flight.

I’m not talking about going line by line through the never-ending Terms of Service, rather reading the details of the itemized charges before checking out and making you understand your baggage allowance.

In this case, with the new promotion, all travelers will need to book their summer trip by March 24 or else you’ll miss out on the deal.

How To Score A Free Checked Bag

Scoring a free checked bag is slightly more complicated than other aforementioned freebies. Those are available from today through August 18, but the free checked bag promotion has a shorter window.

Unfortunately, spring breakers won’t be able to pack their beer bongs, novelty hats, and inflatable flamingos without paying a very confusing checked bag fee (see here).

The free checked bag requires a promo code: FREEBAG. Easy enough, right?

This code is valid for all bookings between May 28, 2025 and August 18, 2025 and the same March 24 booking deadline applies.

In the terms of the promotion, Frontier states: “To receive promotional pricing, customer must enter promo code FREEBAG during new flight purchase made by 11:59pm Eastern time on March 24, 2025 for travel from May 28, 2025 through August 18, 2025. Limit one free Checked Bag per person, per direction, weight limit applies“.

It doesn’t appear Frontier is limiting travelers’ free bags to only domestic routes, and they actually fly to some really cool international places, such as Punta Cana, Puerto Vallarta, and most recently, Aruba and Honduras.

My Experience Flying Frontier

I’ve flown Frontier too many times to count, but also too many times I care to remember — and it’s not just the bag-policing.

I’m not here to trash the airline, but when their CEO releases quotes like “We’ve always had heart” after paying gate agents to target their own customers and “If travelers show us the love, we’ll make these perks permanent”, I don’t know about you, but it rubs me the wrong way as a passionate traveler and journalist.

Especially, when I just tried to fly Frontier March 16 from San Francisco to San Diego with what should’ve been a seamless hour-and-a-half long flight only to be delayed for about 3 hours and ultimately cancelled ‘due to weather’, yet somehow Frontier’s San Francisco – Los Angeles flight still managed to take off that same evening.

Funny how that works.

Frontier left us with no option for a direct route back to San Diego in the coming days. The only other option was to take a 15-hour journey with a long layover for what should have been an hour-and-a-half flight.

My girlfriend and I reluctantly decided to bite the bullet by overpaying for a rental car and drove overnight back home to San Diego that there’s less than a zero percent chance Frontier will reimburse.

These are the type of situations you can find yourself in by flying not just Frontier, but budget airlines in general.

Free checked bag or not, if your airline leaves you stranded, you’ll be forking over a lot more than the amount you saved.

An airline you may not be quite as familiar with has taken over U.S. skies as the ‘most reliable’ carrier in the country.

Given my awful experiences with budget airlines lately, that’s quite a feat, but not one to worry about with Avelo Airlines.

One of America’s newest additions, taking its first flight in Spring 2021, the low-cost carrier has rapidly expanded since its inception, starting off solely as a domestic carrier and now offering travelers affordable fares to some of the most sought-after international beach destinations.

Recently announcing a fourth international flight to one of the Caribbean’s most popular resort destinations, Avelo’s passport-required portfolio now totals 4 premiere getaways for an epic vacation.

Avelo Now Flies To 4 Amazing Caribbean Destinations

As the official first day of spring is right around the corner, there’s no better time to plan a Caribbean escape.

The downside is airlines know this and often jack up the prices knowing you’ll pay it regardless.

Well, that’s the beauty of budget airlines, especially when they’re as reliable as Avelo and not fighting bankruptcy or removing the only enticing perk that’s built a loyal team of travelers for decades (ahem, Southwest).

Budget airlines stick to a tight schedule, often offering only one flight per day. If there’s a cancellation, it’s not unheard of to be stuck until the next flight, which could be days away.

While Avelo is certainly still growing, if you have the option to book with them, this lessens the odds of a massive travel headache should such a situation arise, all for trying to save a few bucks over peace of mind.

Jamaica’s most renowned resort town never disappoints. With ample flights here and numerous high-end resorts to choose from, Jamaica’s slice of paradise has long been one of the Caribbean’s most popular vacation destinations.

With bucket-list resorts like numerous Secrets properties, Sandals, and Riu, plus being a gateway to the stunning beach town of Negril, you can’t go wrong!

Cancun:

The most popular international beach getaway for Americans is none other than Cancun. Anyone surprised?

North Carolinians must Raleigh love vacations because this underrated southern city is quickly becoming a major springboard to some of the world’s top vacation spots.

The Bahamian capital is gleaming with colorful streets, gorgeous white sand beaches, and towering resorts with equal parts relaxation and entertainment for the whole family.

Travelers will have to wait until summer to take advantage of the new Nassau route as it’s slated to launch June 11, 2025, with two flights per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

However, tickets are already on sale online with promotional fares as low as $84 one-way.

As an American, you probably have always enjoyed hassle-free travel worldwide due to the prestige of your passport, which grants you unrestricted access to the vast majority of destinations worldwide.

A U.S. passport is one of the most valuable travel documents, from the Americas to Europe, down to Asia, and over in Africa (though with its limitations).

In 2025, however, your U.S. citizenship will not exempt you from paying a mandatory fee to visit certain places––and if you refuse to pay, there’s no amount of passport power that will save you from getting stopped at the border if you didn’t pay a sneaky fee.

Be it tourist taxes, digital visas, or the so-called ETAs (Electronic Travel Authorizations), here are 4 hugely popular destinations that will have Americans shelling out the dough in 2025:

Venice, Italy

Venice is the most romantic city in Italy.

A complex manmade archipelago interconnected by bridges and narrow, gondola-navigated canals, it is a permanent feature on the bucket list of countless Europe-bound travelers.

Something you must know ahead of visiting is that, on certain times of the year, you’ll be required to book your entry and pay a tax in order to visit the historic center.

The measure was introduced back in 2024, and it’s being brought back for 2025 with two significant updates:

Instead of only 29, the tax will apply on 54 days this year, and if you register to enter Venice less than four days preceding your planned arrival, the price will double from last year’s €5 to €10 (roughly $10.48).

It doesn’t sound like a particularly strong pinch, but what if we told you that, unless you have a valid pass, you can’t see Venice at all? And you didn’t fly all this way for nothing, right?

Now, there are exceptions to the rule: the fee is only levied on tourists on certain dates, typically over the high season, and it only applies to day-trippers.

If you’re staying in the historic center (as in, the City of Venice itself, not neighboring Mestre), you are exempt from paying––you only have to pay the nightly tax.

This is particularly relevant to note, as many tourists will actually stay in Mestre, the mainland ‘extension’ of Venice, a short 13-minute train ride away, to avoid paying upwards of $250-a-night on a canal-facing hotel, so keep that in mind.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Next up, we have one closer to home:

Believe it or not, Puerto Vallarta is imposing a new tourist tax on American newcomers––and every other foreigner, for that matter.

From March 2025, if you fly into Puerto Vallarta International (PVI), you’ll have to show proof of online payment of the new tourist tax or pay it on the spot to be let in.

The payment system will be set up shortly after the measure is implemented next month, and the fee is around $7 or the equivalent in Mexican pesos.

You can pay it in cash (either U.S. dollars or pesos), or with a credit or debit card.

The same will apply to those arriving by cruise ship, as checkpoints will be set up at the main cruise port to ensure tourists comply. So, if you want to get through immigration smoothly, make sure you have a few dollar bills handy.

Aruba

In maintaining its taxation policy of the previous year, Aruba will keep requiring that U.S. passport holders pay a $20 ‘sustainability fee’ when traveling to the sun-drenched island.

If you dream of swimming off its turquoise coast, in the warm Caribbean Sea, and marvel at gracious pink flamingos as they parade down virgin-white sands, there’s just no getting around paying it:

In order to enter Aruba, you must present a completed Online Embarkation/Disembarkation Card (ED Card) upon boarding, and the only way to submit this form is paying the sustainability fee at the end.

As the Aruba Government has noted, at this moment, only credit cards are accepted, so make sure you have a valid one with enough credit.

Unless you have submitted your personal and travel information prior to boarding, you may not be allowed to travel to Aruba, so it’s paramount you do so in advance––and preferably not in the hours leading up to your departure.

London, England

The most expensive fee on this list yet, London has decided that, henceforth, all visa-exempt travelers must apply (and pay £18) for an Electronic Travel Authorization in order to enter.

This one you can’t pay with cash on arrival, though.

More than a tourist tax, the U.K. ETA functions essentially as a digital visa, and unless you can present it upon check-in, you won’t be allowed to board your London flight from America.

The application process is pretty straightforward, but it requires time:

You must download the ETA app, create an account, submit the required documentation, such as a photo of your passport and a selfie, and answer a series of security questions.

Once the form is fully completed, you’ll be asked to provide your credit card details to cover the (roughly) $23 fee when converted to U.S. dollars. You should expect a response from British authorities in up to 3 working days.

That’s why it’s important to get it early, as you don’t want to be grounded at check-in as your ETA hasn’t yet been issued.

The good news?

Well, at least it’s valid for 2 years, and you can use it as many times as you want within that timeframe, so long as every visit to London (and any other U.K. destination) does not exceed six months at a time.

If you’re planning on crossing the pond this spring or summer for a much-needed culture-infused sunny break, there’s one country in particular that should be at the top of your list.

According to Mabrian, a travel intelligence firm, Spain has already captured a whopping one-third of global travel demand for the region for 2025, with approximately 33% of Southern Europe-bound arrivals heading to this destination.

In Europe in general, it accounts for 12% of the rising demand, especially in the shoulder and low seasons, and that’s hardly a surprise: just check the (oddly-pleasant) weather for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria right now, in the middle of winter.

Spain as a whole is set for yet another record-breaking year in tourism, but if you’re wondering where travelers are being drawn to the most, these are the top 5 cities:

Palma de Mallorca

Capturing 4.1% of tourists landing in Southern Europe, Palma de Mallorca is the capital of its namesake Mallorca, an island worth visiting for the scenic callas lapped by turquoise waters and verdant hills strewn with rolling vineyards alone.

Gorgeous as all of Mallorca may be, with resort zones in Pollença and Alcudia drawing in big crowds, Palma is undoubtedly its crown jewel: dating back thousands of years, it has a rich amalgamation of Roman, Vandal, Moorish, and medieval-era landmarks.

Its magnificent cathedral, La Seu, or Cathedral of Santa Maria for English speakers, is the most easily recognized symbol of Palma’s skyline and perhaps the magnum opus of the Catalonian Gothic movement, with intricate rose windows and flying buttresses.

Just opposite the cathedral, Almudaina is a palace combining Islamic and Gothic elements, representative of Palma’s diverse breadth of architecture, whereas Castell de Bellver, sitting on a prominent hill with views of the city, is a uniquely circular-shaped, 14th-century castle.

If you’re looking for that hidden gem beachgoers are missing out on, the Arab Baths should definitely be on your bucket list: built in the 10th century by Mallorca’s at-the-time North African rulers, it has columned chambers and courtyards you’re free to wander through.

Alicante

Over in the Spanish mainland, with high-rises encroaching on a palm-lined, golden sand beach, Alicante is a vibrant resort city boasting year-round warmer temps––just so you know, they’re currently sitting at a pleasant 65 degrees right now in the dead of winter––and lower prices than average.

When you think that going to a tapas bar for patatas bravas and some sweet tinto de verano in a whitewashed Barrio de la Santa Cruz costs $15 or that you can book a room only a few steps away from the beach starts from $40, it’s hardly a surprise tourists are flocking in here.

More specifically, 4.4% of all Mediterranean arrivals, and among the pleasant surprises awaiting them in this offbeat Spanish gem, there’s Explanada de España, a long coastal walk paved with colorful, patterned mosaics, a hilltop, medieval Santa Barbara Castle, and a bustling Mercado Central:

The best spot in town for sampling fresh produce, sampling the seafood––the paella here is arguably up there with the best in the country––and browsing the local delicacies, this market is a sensory overload in the best possible way.

In desperate need of relaxation? Look no further than Postiguet, a postcard-ready beach at the foot of Santa Barbara Castle welcoming guests to crystal-clear seas, a wide range of amenities, and mid-range restaurants with terraces for sunset views.

The gemstone of Spain’s Costa Del Sol, a sun-drenched stretch of coast to the southeast of Spain, Malaga is a sprawling port combining resort city and open-air museum vibes, from the ruin-littered historic center, down to the parasol-sprinkled Malagueta beach.

As part of Andalusia, the hottest destination in Spain as a result of its geographical proximity to Africa, Malagueños and Malagueñas enjoy shorts weather for most of the calendar year, and chances are you won’t need to pack a raincoat irrespective of season.

Malaga’s greatest appeal, however, is its enviable collection of historical structures: for instance, there is a 1st-century Roman Theater built onto the side of a central elevation now dominated by an Islamic 11th-century fortress, the Alcazaba.

Then there is a nearby 14th-century Gibralfaro Castle, occupying yet another hill that overlooks the urban maze that is Malaga and its azure seas, and let’s not forget Malaga’s iconic Plaza de Toros, an intact bullfighting ring that continues to host select events.

Albeit a fascinating cultural ensemble, Malaga’s hustle and bustle can get a tad much at times, especially with the summer crowds––it captures 6.4% of Southern Europe’s arrivals––so if you’re in need of a breather, head out to the verdant, waterfall-dotted Montes de Málaga Natural Park.

Barcelona

At the runner-up position, capturing a whopping 21.7% of all arrivals to Europe’s southern half, Barcelona is the quintessential Mediterranean getaway combining resort city vibes and Old World allure.

Its Barceloneta golden-sand strip, backed by high-rise condominiums and glass-and-steel skyscrapers, is a favorite among beachgoers, and for those who love history, the medieval Gothic Quarter is filled with picturesque alleys, plazas, and locally-run tapas bars.

Despite having an unlimited cultural offer, Barcelona’s pride and joy is undoubtedly its Gaudí heritage, best evidenced in the Sagrada Familia cathedral, the Expressionist chef-d’oeuvre that is Casa Batlló, and the lush Park Güell, best known for its curvilinear shapes and bright colors.

Barcelona tends to get quite busy irrespective of season, so if you’re hoping to beat the crowds, you should leave the bustling streets of Eixample behind and head instead to an offbeat Gràcia, where you’ll find independent boutique shops, cozy cafes, and art galleries.

Other attractions first-time visitors wouldn’t normally pay attention to include Refugi 307, a Spanish Civil War-era bomb shelter now housing a museum, the Roman Necropolis buried beneath Plaça Vila de Madrid, and the serene Parc del Laberint d’Horta, Barcelona’s oldest park featuring a maze.

Madrid

Leading with a 24% share, the capital of Spain is officially the number one destination in Southern Europe right now, and this, to some, might be surprising, considering it doesn’t sit on the coast.

Madrid doesn’t need Mediterranean beaches or palm-lined promenades to woo tourists, though: dubbed Iberian Paris, it is characterized by expansive, leafy boulevards flanked by Belle époque buildings, sprawling green zones, and a host of world-class museums.

The most visited of them all, Prado is home to masterpieces by Goya, Velázquez, El Greco, and Raphael, and if you’re visiting Europe primarily for the magnificent architecture, exploring the area around the portico-bordered Plaza Mayor is a must.

Besides Madrid’s top landmarks, namely the aforementioned Prado, the richly-decorated Baroque Royal Palace, and Parque El Retiro, here are some unique, unexpected things to do in the city in 2025:

Escape the heat and go underground at Andén 0 (or Zero Platform), a historic metro station dating back to the early 20th century, still served by retro-style carriages, or take a leisurely stroll in Cementerio de la Almudena, probably one of Europe’s prettiest burial grounds, littered with ornate chapels and tombs.

Away from El Retiro’s crowds, Quinta de los Molinos is a much more peaceful park with wide avenues strewn with almond trees, and don’t forget Parque del Oeste, in Western Madrid: it will look it’s most beautiful in spring when the rose gardens are in full bloom.

2025 is already shaping up to be an incredible year in travel with new flight routes and abundant affordable travel options.  

And if Detroit Metro Airport is a convenient airport for you then we have even more good news. Delta has singled out this U.S. airport as the departure point for 2 new nonstop flights to popular Caribbean destinations.  

So where can you go? And that all important question, how much will it cost? 

Here’s what you need to know:  

New Flights To Punta Cana, Dominican Republic 

Delta is launching new Saturday flights from Detroit Metro Airport to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. These flights will launch on May 10 and are currently scheduled to operate until August 2.  

We love the convenience of Saturday flights and the joy of spending a full week in the sun.  

So how much do these flights cost? I looked at flight prices for soon after the flights’ launch in mid-May. Flying out on May 17 and returning on May 24 would cost $724 for a round-trip flight.  

This route has an outbound flight time of 4 hours 19 minutes and an inbound flight time of 4 hours 50 minutes.  

This price is based on a basic economy class ticket, which means you can’t select your seats and that the flight is non-changeable.

New Flights To Nassau, Bahamas  

Delta isn’t content with just one new Caribbean flight route. They’re also launching new flights from Delta Metro Airport to Nassau in the Bahamas (landing at Lynden Pindling International Airport).  

If you want to escape to paradise this winter, then you’ll be pleased to hear that Delta has just relaunched a weekly nonstop route between the two destinations. These flights are available now and are scheduled to run until April 12.  

This is the only nonstop flight route between these two cities, making the Bahamas more accessible than ever for those living in or around the metro Detroit area.  

So how much would these flights set you back? I looked at flights flying out on February 8 and returning on February 15. These would cost $768 for a roundtrip flight.  

This route has an outbound flight time of 3 hours 29 minutes and an inbound flight time of 3 hours 34 minutes.  

Just like the sample route above, this price is based on a basic economy class ticket which means you can’t select your seats and that the flight is non-changeable. To upgrade to a main cabin ticket would cost $848 (or an additional $80 per person).  

Benefits of a main cabin ticket include the ability to select and change your seat and cancel your ticket for full credit if needed.  

Exploring A Caribbean Island Paradise  

The flight prices to visit both Punta Cana and Nassau from Detroit are relatively similar, but which island paradise is right for you?  

Both offer incredible beaches. In Punta Cana, you’ll find powdery white sand beaches that stretch for miles. Juanillo Beach and Arena Gorda Beach are considered two of the best in the resort.  

Nassau also boasts stunning white sand beaches that look like the front of a postcard! Cabbage Beach and Cable Beach are considered the best in this resort.  

Both Nassau and Punta Cana are also great spots for scuba diving, but strong currents in Punta Cana mean the diving here can sometimes be unreliable. Meanwhile, Nassau is known for its shark encounters.  

Locations such as Shark Wall, Shark Arena, and Shark Runway (the clues in the name!) are the best spots for diving with sharks in Nassau. Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas offers Nassau’s best shark diving experiences. These cost $242 per person.  

If you have one eye on your budget, then it’s worth noting that Punta Cana tends to be more affordable than Nassau. Like-for-like hotels are cheaper in Punta Cana, and everyday expenses such as restaurants and experiences are cheaper than in Nassau too.  

According to Budget Your Trip, the average daily cost (per person) in Punta Cana is $174, while the average daily cost in Nassau is $228. But of course, these costs can vary wildly depending on the standard of accommodation you choose, as well as what you plan to see and do on your trip.

They did it! For the first time in recorded history, the sun-drenched paradise that is the Dominican Republic has recorded its 11th million annual visitor in 2024, over a million more than in 2023.

Needless to say, the surge in arrivals has been led by a wide margin by Punta Cana, the leading resort town on the easternmost tip of the island and every American’s go-to destination in winter––that is, if they’re not going to Cancun.

If you’re wondering how Punta Cana keeps building on its popularity year after year, to the point it’s arguably the number one destination in the Caribbean this winter, here are 6 reasons why:

Cheap Flights From America

The excellent flight connectivity plays a huge part in Punta Cana’s popularity with Americans: no matter where you live Stateside, you’re likely to be a short 1-2 hour drive away from an airport that offers flights to the resort hotspot.

If that does not apply, your regional airport is surely connected to one of the 20 larger hubs hosting Punta Cana flights.

These include major airports like New York (JFK), Atlanta (ATL), Charlotte (CLT), Philadelphia (PHL), and Miami (MIA), with airlines such as American Airlines, JetBlue, and Frontier, among many more, selling tickets from only $85, as seen on Kayak.

Picture-Perfect Beaches

Then there’s the fact Punta Cana is home to some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere in the Caribbean.

Lying adjacent to Playa Bavaro, in the eastern Dominican Republic, it forms the wider Costa del Coco, or Coconut Coast, a stretch of coastline strewn with palm-tree-dotted white sands and bordered by gin-colored seas.

The area is literally packed with swimming sites catering to a diverse audience:

The peaceful Playa Blanca has laid-back restaurants, plenty of room to lie in the sun, and serene waters; are you a surfer and water sports enthusiast? Macao Beach is the place to be, with its tube-shaped waves and youthful atmosphere.

Now, if you love Cancun’s Hotel Zone for the buzzing shopping scene and nightlife, and you’d like to check out Punta Cana’s version of it this way, Carretera Cabeza de Toro runs parallel to a well-frequented beach, and it’s lined with shops and seafood restaurants.

It isn’t a Caribbean vacation if there isn’t some pampering involved.

Similarly to other leisure destinations in the turquoise sea, Punta Cana boasts a high concentration of luxury resorts with a wide range of prices, whether you’re simply looking for somewhere comfortable enough to sleep and within walking distance of the beach or an all-inclusive.

For the former, Aventura Villas Los Carales is a great alternative to the pricier resorts, with overnight rates of $154 for a Deluxe Suite with ocean views, an outdoor pool for all guests, and 9 restaurants in the premises of the accommodation.

If all-inclusive’s your way to travel, the award-winning Royalton CHIC Punta Cana is a solid pick, with a private beach, 7 restaurants on-site, a lagoon-style pool, and spa facilities––not to mention all of the endless food and sumptuous breakfast buffet for $390-a-night.

Dominican Culture

Besides living it up in luxurious resorts, immersing themselves in Dominican culture is just as appealing to tourists.

The overlooked capital, Santo Domingo, is a colonial-era gem and the oldest city founded by Europeans in the Americas, distinguished by a UNESCO-protected historic center, 16th-century fortifications, and ornate churches.

This day tour of Santo Domingo leaving from Punta Cana is the easiest and safest way to discover the historically-significant city, from $75.

Alternatively, you can visit a monkey sanctuary in the Dominican jungle, as well as plantation fields dating back to the period of colonial rule ($95), take a catamaran ferry to unspoiled Saona Island ($97), or enjoy a food sampling tour in Punta Cana itself (for only $8).

Great Food All Around

Though not as widely popular in America as Mexican or Cuban, Dominican food is just as delicious as their Caribbean counterparts, and Punta Cana has its fair share of amazing restaurants, both in and outside resort premises.

Don’t leave without trying Bandera Dominican (Dominican Flag), the national dish, combining white rice, beans, and stewed chicken, beef or pork, sancocho, the meat-heavy Caribbean stew, and any of the lemon-sprayed, freshly-caught fish.

Venturing outside your hotel?

Some of the top-rated restaurants in town are La Tiendita, a 4.5-star-reviewed steakhouse, La Yola, a Caribbean-Mediterranean fusion serving delicious lobster risotto, and Jellyfish Beach Restaurant, famous for their fillet mignon.

Punta Cana Resorts Are Safe For Tourists

Last but certainly not least, Punta Cana is a low-risk destination for Americans vacationing abroad: between the luxury resorts and their crime-free beaches and the well-surveilled downtown, violent crime affecting visitors in this part of the island is almost unheard-of.

That being said, you shouldn’t lower your guard if venturing out of your resort: make sure your valuables are kept in a hotel safe, and only take out your phone to take pictures if the surroundings feel safe enough.

Other parts of the Dominican Republic may be less safe than Punta Cana’s resort strip, such as Santo Domingo, where petty crime and even violent crime occur at higher rates.

This last summer season saw a notable influx of tourists choosing to spend their holiday cruising along gorgeous coastlines. 

However, what some might have perceived as a seasonal trend is, in fact, an enduring phenomenon that shows no signs of going away any time soon.

One of the main reasons why cruises continue to rise in popularity is that they offer excellent value. This is especially true of longer, more distant travels.

Let’s take a practical example. 

A 7-day cruise, which departs from Miami and covers four destinations in the Caribbean, currently starts at $529 per person – this includes travel and lodging.

On the flip side, say you were to book a flight from Miami to just one of the destinations the cruise covers.

In this case, let’s assume you’re going to the Bahamas since it’s one of the most popular destinations for American travelers.

The cheapest two-way ticket (per person) right now goes at $262.

Though airfare prices have dropped this shoulder season, remember that you’ll still have to account for lodging expenses for a one-week stay.

Once in the Bahamas, you’ll find that the average hotel will set you back $150 a night. While it is possible to find accommodation that costs less than $100 a night, the 7-night total will still trump the $529 you’d pay on a cruise.

Since our hypothetical vacation is one week long, let’s also account for food and drink expenses. 

Most cruises will charge an extra $200-$400 for unlimited drinks and food credit. Let’s assume a $300 average – that boils down to a $43 daily food budget, which is far cheaper than what you’d spend if you were to eat in cafes and restaurants close to your destination of choice.

When you combine the notable price difference with the ease and flexibility that cruises provide, it’s clear why so many travelers consider them to be the best bang for their buck.

Europe is like a magnet for Americans, especially in the summer months when, in some hot spots, it can feel like the American tourists outnumber the locals.  

And it’s easy to understand why. Europe crams so many cultures, cuisines, and historical attractions into a relatively small geographic space that it makes the perfect travelers’ playground.  

But travelers-in-the-know are avoiding the crowds and heat of Europe in the summer, and visiting during the winter months instead.  

The atmosphere is different, the vibe more relaxed, and, dare I say, tourists are welcomed more warmly, too.  

So where are they going? According to research by Allianz, these are the top 5 most popular European destinations for U.S. travelers this winter:  

5. Dublin, Ireland  

The popularity of Dublin as a winter vacation destination has exploded this year, jumping to 5^th most popular destination from last year’s position as 7th most popular.  

If you’ve always imagined getting cozy by the roaring fire of a traditional Irish pub, then winter is the perfect time to do it.  

And although the weather can be a little dreary, the longer nights and shorter days means that the nightlife in Dublin in the winter months is exceptional. For example, St Patrick’s Cathedral hosts live music and gigs throughout November, and the 3Olympia Theater dedicates itself to comedy in January.

If you’re looking for a little festive cheer then from October 24 ‘til January 5, Dublin Zoo will host its famous Wild Lights Nights.  

This is a spectacular display with illuminated installations that you can enjoy as you move between the enclosures of the zoo. Entry costs 24.50 euros ($26) per person.  

4. Rome, Italy  

The Eternal City is one of the most popular cities in Europe during the summer months, with local authorities even introducing a ticket system to visit the Trevi Fountain in a bid to control the crowds.  

But in the winter the crowds are gone and you can explore this living museum at your leisure. Temperatures are mild and you’ll find there are plenty of sunny days too.  

The culture, architecture, and cuisine that the city is famous for are just as enjoyable in the winter as in the summer – perhaps more so. But the winter months also have their own unique charm.  

Between December and February you can visit the Grinzing Village at Piazza Adriana and enjoy outdoor ice skating with a festive feel. There’s no need to pre book, you can just turn up!  

On January 5 and 6 the Romans celebrate the legend of Befana, the witch who brings gifts. This is a great time to be in the city as there’s a carnival and a parade of over 100 people dressed in period costume.  

3. Madrid, Spain 

Madrid is one of the best Spanish cities to visit in winter. Crisp with a chill in the air and clear blue skies you can top up your vitamin D and explore this fascinating hot spot.  

During November and December Madrid boasts Christmas markets, pop up ice skating rinks, and ornate nativity scenes.

Don’t miss the Christmas market in the Plaza Mayor, which has been attracting visitors since the 17th century.  

If you want to escape from cold or rain, head into the Prado Museum. One of the most fascinating galleries in Europe for art lovers, you can find pieces by Goya, Velázquez  , and El Greco here. From October 15 – February 6 there is a special exhibition dedicated to the work of Reubens. 

General admission costs 15 euros ($16) per person.  

2. Paris, France 

If you’re hoping to visit Paris without breaking the bank then winter is the best time to choose. Hotel prices drop considerably.

The weather is cold, and often wet, but the city is still charming and the crowd level is much lower too.  

From November onwards, the city is sprinkled with Christmas trees, lights, and decorations. On rainy days take the opportunity to explore the art in the Louvre or the Palace of Versailles. 

If you love to shop then visit in January for Les Soldes. My favorite time to be in Paris! Unlike in the U.S. or the UK when stores seem to have permanent sales, in France there are only 2 official sale periods. The first of these runs from Janaury 10 – February 6 and is a great time to bag a bargain!  

1. London, England 

It should come as no surprise that London is the most popular European destination for U.S. travelers this winter.

London was also the most popular European destination for U.S. travelers last winter!  

I’ve mentioned before that winter is my favorite time of year to visit London. The incredible light displays, festive atmosphere, and the chill in the air all create a wonderful experience. 

Some of the best things to do in London in winter include visiting the museums and galleries, wandering along the South Bank to see the lights, and for a taste of Christmas visit the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. This opens from November 21 ‘til January 5 and entry tickets cost from £5 ($6) with additional charges for activities such as ice skating.  

For traditional Christmassy foods, take a walk to Borough Market. This is London’s oldest and largest food market, and although it does have a reputation for being overrun with tourists (especially in the summer) the quality of the food here is excellent.  

Like Dublin, London in winter is a great place to cozy up in a pub with a pint. Try the Grazing Goat in Marylebone or the The Anglesea Arms by Ravenscourt Park. This has an open panelling and roaring fire, creating an authentic British pub feel.

This week, the entity updated its list, reissuing travel advice for 5 destinations, including 3 popular Caribbean getaways some Americans might have on their radar this winter, and we have good news for you:

Updates have been mostly positive. Let’s start with the Caribbean.

3 Caribbean Islands Placed At Level 1

Featuring at Level 1, the most desirable status any country can aim for, we now have Bermuda, a British island territory famous for its pink sands, picturesque capital Hamilton, featuring pastel-colored buildings and red telephone boxes, and luxury resorts.

According to the State Department, Americans visiting Bermuda this season should exercise ‘normal’ precautions, as levels of crime on the island aren’t significant, and the vast majority of vacationers have a hassle-free stay.

After Bermuda, U.S. authorities included an offbeat, yet incredibly-beautiful Grenada in their Level 1 advisory: an archipelago-nation comprising a mountainous main island and several satellite islets, it boasts a rich British-colonial heritage, with historic plantations and 18th-century forts galore.

Grenada is also highly sought-after for its unruffled golden sand beaches, that are nowhere as crowded as in other resort islands, and the fact safety risks are minimal makes it particularly appealing to U.S. guests.

That being said, the islands of Carriaocu and Petite Martinique are still recovering from Hurricane Beryl, as noted in the advisory, and some services may yet to be re-established.

Last but not least, there’s Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, yet another independent collective of islands distinguished by yacht-lined harbors, dramatic volcanic landscapes, especially in St. Vincent, the largest landmass, and paradisiacal isles that host private villas.

Be it lounging on a deserted Princess Margaret Beach, where the sands are powdered-sugar white, or sailing along a reef-fringed Bequia Island, this safe, mostly crime-free island is perfect for unwinding, with overnight stays in beachfront hotels starting at $220.

Similarly to Grenada, however, you should know the islands of Canouan, Mayreau, Palm Islands, and Union Island are still recovering from Hurricane Beryl.

One Of The Safest Destinations In The World Is Now At Level 2

Greenland is one of the safest destinations in the world, as an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark only 56,865 people call home, with low, to negligible crime, so you’d naturally expect it to be part of the Level 1 crowd.

That’s no longer the case, but not for the reason you may be thinking.

Greenland continues to be a low-risk adventure when personal integrity is concerned, but on the downside, its extreme weather conditions and limited emergency services may pose a problem to American visitors in need.

As the State Department reiterates, consular assistance in Greenland is extremely limited, and as the weather can be harsh, most notably in winter, and resources are scarce away from larger settlements like Nuuk, visitors should proceed with ‘increased’ caution.

In other words, as fun as those can be, don’t go snowmobiling or dog-sledding by yourself, as it can take search and rescue efforts several days to reach the site of an accident.

South Africa Remains At Level 2 Despite Rising Crime

To end this story on a good note, advice has been reissued for South Africa, a bucket list country for millions of travelers, and we’re glad to report it is officially considered moderately-risky to visit.

Though a lot has been said in the media about South Africa in recent years, following the significant spike in inter-communal violence and incessant power outages, Washington officials have refrained from issuing their feared Level 3, or even Level 4 alert.

It continues at Level 2, as per the November 7 review.

That’s not to say Americans should let their guard down when traveling in Africa’s southernmost state, with crime, civil unrest, and even kidnapping remaining major concerns––still, incidents involving foreigners do not occur at alarming rates so as to warrant more serious warnings.

The advisory reads that ‘violent crime is common and includes armed robbery, rape, carjacking, and mugging’, as well as ‘smash-and-grab attacks’ on private vehicles, so you should be vigilant at all times when traveling through urban areas.

Here are some safety tips for South Africa:

• Keep your valuables in a hotel safe, if you’re traveling with jewelry and/or luxury watches
• Do not use your phone in public (newer iPhones and other expensive models are most-targeted)
• Avoid joining demonstration and protesting crowds as these have the potential to turn violent
• Do not go to suburban areas unaccompanied
• Beware of existing racial tensions within certain communities
• If traveling inside South Africa, plan your route in advance and stick to the main highway (shortcuts are not advised as these may be controlled by militia)
• Roll up windows and lock doors when driving
• Avoid walking alone at night in poorly-lit, deserted areas
