Keeping an eye on the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories is always a smart move. These advisories are a key resource for American citizens heading abroad, providing important safety and security information to help you make informed decisions. Just this past week, the State Department updated advisories for several destinations around the globe. Let’s break down what these updates mean for six specific countries.

Understanding US Travel Advisories

So, what exactly are these travel advisories? Think of them as guidance from the U.S. government about potential risks in different parts of the world. They are designed to keep you informed about conditions like crime, terrorism, civil unrest, natural disasters, health risks, and other potential dangers you might encounter when traveling outside the United States. The State Department constantly monitors situations in foreign countries and updates these advisories as needed. They aren’t designed to tell you not to travel, but rather to inform you so you can travel more safely and be prepared for potential issues. Checking the advisory for your destination is a crucial step before booking your trip and again just before you leave.

The Four Advisory Levels: What They Mean

The State Department uses a clear, four-level system to rate the potential risks in a country:

• Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions. This is the lowest advisory level. It means there are no significant safety or security risks that are out of the ordinary for travel. While you should always be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are, this level suggests typical travel safety measures are sufficient.
• Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. At this level, there are heightened risks to safety and security. This could be due to increased crime rates, specific health concerns, or potential for civil unrest. Travelers are advised to be more vigilant and take extra precautions.
• Level 3: Reconsider Travel. This level suggests serious risks to safety and security are present. This might be due to significant crime, terrorism, unstable political situations, or major health crises. The State Department recommends that travelers seriously think about whether they need to travel to this location.
• Level 4: Do Not Travel. This is the highest advisory level, reserved for countries where there is a very high likelihood of life-threatening risks. This could include active conflict, extreme levels of crime or terrorism, or severe health risks. The U.S. government may have limited ability to provide assistance to citizens in a Level 4 country.

Recent Updates You Should Know About

In the last few days of April 2025, the State Department refreshed its guidance for several nations. Here are the updates for six countries:

For Indonesia, the advisory was updated on April 30, 2025, maintaining a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. Countries at this level often pose risks such as crime, terrorism, or natural disasters like earthquakes or tsunamis, which Indonesia is known to be susceptible to. Travelers are encouraged to be more aware of their surroundings, especially in tourist areas, and monitor local news and weather.

Paraguay also saw an update on April 30, 2025, and remains at Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions. This indicates that typical safety precautions are recommended, similar to traveling within the United States. While petty crime can occur anywhere, Paraguay is generally considered a safe destination for tourists following standard safety practices.

The advisory for North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) was updated on April 29, 2025, and it continues to be at Level 4: Do Not Travel. This highest level reflects the significant and life-threatening risks present. The U.S. government warns of the serious risk of arrest and long-term detention of U.S. citizens. There is very limited to no consular assistance available in North Korea.

Papua New Guinea was updated on April 29, 2025, and holds a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory. High rates of crime, including violent crime and civil unrest, are common reasons for a Level 3 advisory. Travelers are advised to be extra vigilant, avoid traveling after dark, and be aware of potential for sudden civil disturbances.

Also updated on April 29, 2025, Burundi is currently under a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory. Political instability, civil unrest, and crime are often factors contributing to this level in Burundi. The State Department urges travelers to exercise extreme caution and reconsider their plans due to these serious risks.

Finally, the Solomon Islands advisory was updated on April 29, 2025, and remains at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. Reasons for this level can include social unrest or crime. Travelers should be mindful of their personal safety and security, particularly in and around the capital, Honiara, and stay informed about local conditions.

Colombia – a nation pulsating with vibrant culture, stunning Andean landscapes, lush coffee regions, and Caribbean coastlines – continues to capture the imagination of travelers worldwide. From the historic streets of Cartagena to the bustling energy of Bogotá and the modern vibe of Medellin, its appeal is undeniable. However, amidst this allure, the U.S. State Department has issued an updated Travel Advisory, urging potential visitors to weigh the risks carefully.  

On April 17, 2025, the State Department reissued its advisory for Colombia, maintaining the country at an overall Level 3: Reconsider Travel. This level sits just below the most severe warning, Level 4: Do Not Travel. A Level 3 advisory doesn’t mean Americans cannot go, but it signals serious risks to safety and security that warrant careful consideration before booking that ticket.  

Based on over 20 trips to Medellin within the last four years, I can sincerely attest to the importance of heeding official travel warnings. Although I have personally been fortunate enough to avoid major incidents, reports of robberies targeting foreign tourists are pervasive and occur almost daily. Spending even a short time browsing Medellin expat Facebook group offers a realistic understanding of the situation on the ground.

Why the Caution? Understanding the Risks

The advisory flags several major concerns across Colombia: crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping. ^{Violent crime isn’t isolated to specific areas; incidents like murder, assault, and armed robbery are unfortunately common in many parts of the country. Organized crime groups are active, engaging in extortion, robbery, and kidnapping. Drive-by snatchings of phones and valuables by thieves on motorcycles are also a frequent hazard, particularly targeting those displaying signs of wealth like expensive watches or jewelry.}  

Terrorist groups, including dissident factions that refused to demobilize after peace agreements and organizations like the National Liberation Army (ELN), still operate and pose a threat. ^{They may attack with little warning, targeting locations frequented by tourists, transportation hubs, markets, government facilities, and other public areas.}  

Furthermore, civil unrest is a factor. Political demonstrations occur regularly and can shut down roads and highways unexpectedly, disrupting travel and sometimes turning violent.

“Do Not Travel” Zones: High-Risk Areas

While the country overall is Level 3, the State Department strongly advises against all travel (Level 4) to specific regions due to extreme danger:

1. Arauca, Cauca (excluding the city of Popayán), and Norte de Santander departments: These areas face significant threats from both crime and terrorism. Violent crime is particularly prevalent.
2. The Colombia-Venezuela border region: This zone is flagged for high levels of crime, kidnapping, potential conflict between armed groups, and the risk of accidental crossing into Venezuela, which could lead to detention.  

The U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to citizens in these Level 4 areas, and official U.S. personnel face severe travel restrictions there.  

A Specific Danger: Dating App Risks, Especially in Medellin

Beyond the general advisory, a critical security alert issued previously by the U.S. Embassy in Bogotá remains highly relevant, especially for visitors to major cities like Medellin, Cartagena, and Bogotá. Criminals are increasingly using online dating applications (like Tinder, Bumble, Grindr, and others) to lure victims, particularly foreigners.  

The pattern often involves matching with someone online and agreeing to meet at a public place like a bar or restaurant, or sometimes at the victim’s hotel or residence. Criminals, sometimes working in teams, then use drugs to incapacitate their victims – Scopolamine (also known as “Devil’s Breath”) is frequently used, as it can render a person unconscious and induce amnesia. Once drugged, victims are robbed of their belongings, including phones, wallets, bank cards, and computers. Tragically, numerous incidents involving U.S. citizens being drugged, robbed, and even killed after meeting someone via a dating app have been reported. The Embassy noted a significant spike in thefts and violent deaths involving foreign visitors in Medellin in 2023 and 2024, many linked to these dating app encounters and potential drugging or overdose scenarios.  

Traveling Smarter and Safer

If you decide to travel to Colombia despite the Level 3 advisory:

• Be Informed: Read the full Travel Advisory and Country Information page on the State Department website. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for alerts and easier location in emergencies.  
• Stay Aware: Maintain constant situational awareness. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in unfamiliar areas. Keep a low profile – avoid displaying cash or expensive jewelry.
• Transportation: Do not hail taxis on the street. Use reputable dispatch services or vehicle-for-hire apps. U.S. government employees are prohibited from using street taxis.  
• Dating Apps: Exercise extreme caution. If meeting someone new, do so only in very public places for initial encounters. Inform a friend or family member of your plans, who you are meeting, and which app you used. Never leave drinks or food unattended. Be wary of inviting strangers to your accommodation.
• Demonstrations: Avoid all protests and large crowds, as they can turn violent without warning. Monitor local media.  
• Have a Plan: Prepare for emergency situations and ensure you have adequate travel insurance covering medical evacuation.

Colombia offers incredible experiences, but the current security landscape demands caution. By understanding the risks outlined by the State Department and taking proactive safety measures, travelers can make more informed decisions to protect themselves while exploring this captivating country.

2025 is the year of the Dupe. No, not dupe like you’ll fall for the ol’ three-card Monte trick; dupe as in travel alternatives.

Hard to believe it’s been years since the pandemic was declared over, but one thing has become increasingly clear to this day — travel is back.

Whether it be renowned resorts sold out night after night, having to unnecessarily check bags, or being forced to share selfies in what-should-be wide open plains of national or state parks, travelers are embracing their sense of wanderlust all the over the world, leaving the door open to discover more hidden gems.

When it comes to the U.S., one could argue Alaska is America’s least-explored state, but on the mainland, it’s gotta be West Virginia, right?

Known more for its deeply rooted history of coal mining and longstanding tales of Appalachian folklore, those who have visited West Virginia typically come out the other side shocked by how beautiful the “Mountain State” truly is ,especially being home to America’s most underrated state park.

West Virginia, Take Me…To Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

Anything beats counting bottles of beer on the wall, but let’s not even pretend there’s a better road trip song than Take Me Home, Country Roads.

We’ve all belted out West Virginia’s unofficial theme song at one point or another, but rarely do we ever scope out the state itself for a nice, relaxing getaway.

Full disclosure – West Virginia has often found itself on the wrong side of headlines as numerous former coal mining hubs are nothing but ghost towns these days, leaving locals living in poverty in some cases, and holding the highest death rate for overdoses in the nation, according to the CDC.

Those very headlines, along with dark mysteries of Appalachia, have cast a shadow over the bright spots of West Virginia people have long been missing out on — one of them being Cass Scenic Railroad State Park.

Those who have visited absolutely love it! The park’s Google rating stands at an impressive 4.7 out of 5, with one recent guest claiming, “My family and I truly enjoyed this trip. Beautiful scenery, knowledgeable staff. Nice places to stay nearby and good places to eat. There is so much to do. Lunch was provided with our train ride. 10/10 would recommend!”.

All Aboard The Cass Scenic RailRoad!

Located in blink-and-you’ll-miss-it town of Cass, this vast state park is home to breathtaking mountain vistas, ancient forests, and mazes of hiking trails to explore, but many opt for the a scenic train ride courtesy of Mountain Rail West Virginia, offering seasonal packages on the Cass Scenic Railroad throughout the year.

Best of all, come May, the historic locomotive is bringing back 3 routes with gorgeous views of waterfalls, lush wilderness, and rustic towns like Durbin nestled in the mountains.

These are Cass Scenic Railroad’s current excursions:

New Tygart Flyer (operating April – November) –

TLC was wrong on this one; you’ll definitely want to chase waterfalls. Enjoy comfortable, climate-controlled coaches, a cold-cut lunch, and stunning views of High Falls of Cheat, the region’s dazzling natural wonder, along with flowing rivers, and sky-high bridges.

Waterfall excursions begin May 4, 2025.

Greenbriar Express (operating May – October) –

Aforementioned Durbin is the highlight of this route. Departing from Cass, the Greenbrier Express offers a scenic journey to one of West Virginia’s most picturesque towns exuding timeless charm with general stores, Mom & Pop eateries, all backdropped by astounding wilderness of Monongahela National Forest.

Cass Bald Knob Trip (operating May – October) –

Hope you’re not afraid of heights! This 4.5 hour trek to Bald Knob takes passengers upwards of 2,300 feet for breathtaking views of Appalachian landscapes ranging from spruce forests and staggering mountains as this is the second highest point in West Virginia.

Cass Whitaker Station (operating May – October) –

Taking 2 hours round-trip, guests can hop aboard century-old trains and chug along scenic meadows and rolling hills, ultimately reaching Whitaker Station to deep dive into the area’s historic logging operations.

This route includes a 30 minute break to take in sweeping views of the countryside and peruse the recreated logging camp and intriguing exhibits.

Rent A Spacious Cabin

Camping isn’t for everyone. That’s why “glamping” has become more popular, but who would ever turn down a cabin in the woods?

Truthfully, Cass Scenic Railroad State Park’s cabins might be the best of all because they house up to 14 people comfortably with 2, 3, and 4-bedroom layouts.

These “cabins”, described as ‘restored company houses’, were formerly quarters for loggers back in the day but now serve as truly unique stays to make your base for exploring the park or indulging in the delights of Cass’s small town charm.

Houses are available year-round and can be booked directly here with rates starting at $105 per night this spring and upwards of $180 this summer.

After much of the U.S. dealt with frigid cold winters, springtime is essentially an open invitation to explore the great outdoors.

We all know California is one of the best states for an awesome beach getaway, but it also boasts some of the best national and state parks in the nation, such as Joshua Tree, Yosemite, and, most notably for this particular article, Sequoia National Park.

Home to unbelievably towering trees and some of the prettiest scenery I’ve personally ever seen in the Golden State, Sequoia draws crowds from all over the U.S.

But why not visit a place that’s nearly identical with fewer tourists, spacious trails, equally pretty photo-ops, and nearby wineries to cap off a much-needed relaxing escape in nature?

You can do so in far lesser-known Calaveras Big Trees State Park, an underrated state park that undoubtedly lives up to its name, and visitor satisfaction is through the roof!

Reaching Calaveras Big Trees State Park

Word to the wise – Whichever state park you decide to visit this spring; don’t do like I did at Sequoia by renting a cheap Toyota Yaris only to deal with the anxiety of wondering whether it will make it up a rocky hill or if I’d soon be calling AAA for assistance in the middle of nowhere.

Needless to say, a little extra engine oomph goes a long way.

Obviously, you will need a vehicle to explore Calaveras as it’s located roughly 2 hours away from the nearest airport, Sacramento, which is also worthy of spending some time before venturing off into the woods as California’s trending capital city is breaking tourism records.

From Sacramento, you’ll head through some of NorCal’s hidden gems, such as Lodi, before you weave through the western slopes of the Sierra in what’s hopefully not a Toyota Yaris before ultimately reaching this nearly century-old state park.

Day-use passes are $10. Before planning your trip, there are some notable closures to vehicles to be aware of:

• Walter W. Smith Parkway (until May 1, 2025)
• Scenic Overlook
• Lava Bluffs
• Stanislaus River
• South Grove
• Bradley Grove
• Beaver Creek

Emphasis On ‘Big Trees’

A visit to Calaveras is all the more enjoyable without dozens of tourists lined up to take the same selfie you’re trying to take like you might find at Sequoia National Park.

Until you witness Calaveras’ staggering Sequoia trees in person, you won’t believe how huge they truly are.

There are ample trails to taking you deep into the park under canopies of giants that are often thousands of years old.

The South Grove may be off-limits for vehicles for now, but here you’ll find at least 1,000 towering trees, while the North Grove is home to roughly 100.

One of the most popular sites is the “Father of the Forest” a fallen behemoth thought to stand as tall as 400 feet in its heyday and like Sequoia, there are carved-out trees to pass through for the perfect Instagram shot.

Calaveras Holds A Perfect TripAdvisor Rating

Visitors have truly fallen in love with Calaveras and the proof is in the pudding. Park guests have ooh-ed and ahh-ed about their experiences ranging from the cozy on-site cabins, ‘breathtaking trees’, to being the highlight of an entire California road trip.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park holds a perfect rating on TripAdvisor. I repeat, a perfect rating.

Do you know how hard that is to do in a world where everyone seems to feel they can say anything hidden behind their screens?

It truly speaks volumes by how much of an enjoyable hidden gem Calaveras truly is, and spring is a great time to plan a trip as the sun shines bright throughout consistent 60 to 75-degree days in April and May.

Murphys, California: A Blip On The Map Teeming With Relaxing Wineries

If you thought Napa was the only place to sip California’s finest wine, think again! There are numerous inviting wine destinations spread across California; some more popular than others.

The tiny town of Murphys may not have been on your 2025 Bingo card until now, but it should be.

With over 20 family-owned wineries, this charming small town is a far cry from what some might say is overly curated Napa.

Additionally, after a long day exploring Calaveras’ vast wilderness, there’s no better way to reward yourself with sinfully delicious eats than a top-rated V Restaurant, Bistro & Bar.

There are many wineries to choose from along the town’s main strip like fun-to-say Frog’s Tooth Winery or the oldest family-owned winery, Milliaire Winery.

For more space and pretty scenery, there are multiple wineries and vineyards away from the quaint townscape, such as Locke Vineyards, Ironstone Vineyards, and Indian Rock Vineyards.

One recent visitor to Murphy’s Ironstone Vineyards may have put it best by saying, “Basically, Murphy’s is now one huge wine tasting room. The wines on the main street are hit and miss, but when we skipped town and came here, we hit the jackpot”.

Telling anyone to bypass Zion National Park would be a disgrace, but with that comes the hassle of crowds, including traffic (yes, traffic!) when hopping from one fiery red landscape to the next.

I’ve been in the midst of it myself and was honestly quite disappointed with how limited the park felt, having brought my dog along with minimal pet-friendly trails and bumper-to-bumper traffic in certain regions of the park.

While there may be mixed reviews with such cases, one thing is for certain – adventure awaits in Utah.

A new report from local Utah news source KSL revealed 4 state parks have undergone a mass transformation for tourists and locals alike to enjoy new sites, including ever-so-trendy tiny homes, all without the headache of crowds that more notable parks may incur.

Escalante Petrified Forest State Park

If you’ve never heard of Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, just know it lives up to the name.

Brimming with ancient trees and petrified remnants lining the maze of wide-open trails, this is one of Utah’s most unique parks.

Entry fees are $10 and well worth it for the astounding scenery and crowd-free nature, where, in many areas, you can embrace solitude on a hike, bike ride, or lakeside lounging.

Located essentially in the middle of nowhere, this State Park boasts a brand-new campground with fees starting at $30 per night, plus additional costs for water, electricity, and dump stations.

While here, don’t skimp out on nearby natural attractions perfect for photo-ops, such as Lower Calf Creek Falls and Phipps Arch.

Red Fleet State Park

Venturing even deeper into no man’s land lies Red Fleet State Park, where its claim to fame is 200 million-year-old dinosaur tracks, where it’s said the best times to view them are early morning and late afternoon.

While this is certainly no Jurassic Park, hold on to your butts because this park is no snoozer!

With plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, such as hiking, dirt biking, and numerous water thrills like waterskiing and paddle boarding on the Red Fleet Reservoir, often considered a ‘mini Lake Powell’

You’ll likely want to make more than a day trip out of Red Fleet. If that’s the case, take advantage of the park’s revamped campgrounds with brand new tiny homes for rent, as well as other useful amenities to be named at a later date.

Utahraptor State Park

And the winner for best State Park name goes to….

Full disclosure: Utahraptor State Park doesn’t have the best reputation. Formerly plagued with negative reviews as a barren wasteland with nothing to do, Utahraptor has undergone a much-needed glow-up.

Now, there are 67 modern campgrounds to liven the place in hopes of attracting more visitors than the measly 26,000 that were largely disappointed in 2024.

But hey, let’s give this place a chance. After all, it’s only been a designated State Park since 2021, with construction still ongoing for an official grand opening slated for Spring 2025.

Located near Moab, if this Utahraptor doesn’t turn out to be a dud, just 15 minutes away are more popular Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park, plus ULUM, a luxurious ‘glamping’ resort.

Bear Lake State Park

Bear Lake State Park is certainly the most appealing to the eye at first glance out of these 4 State Parks. Bear Lake itself is mesmerizing with turquoise waters and surrounded by rolling hills in the distance.

So pretty, in fact, it’s been dubbed “the Caribbean of the Rockies”. Obviously, you’ll want to spend the majority of your trip in and around the fabulous waters here.

To do so, you’ll have to fork over at least $15 to enter. Fees vary based on season and residency, which you can view here.

Fishing, jet-skiing, and boating are very popular, as are hiking, picnicking, and camping out, which is the new hype surrounding Bear Lake as new campgrounds and day-use areas were recently built in the Rainbow Cove and North Eden regions of the park.

Bear Lake is shared with Wyoming, and there are also hotels dotted throughout the area, such as The Resort At Bear Lake and Sunrise Resort & Event Center.
