Fall is one of the very best seasons to travel if you’re not keen to part with your cash!  

According to new research from Airbnb, fall is the most affordable season to travel, and the price per night across its network is at its lowest in fall compared to the rest of the year.  

As an added bonus, fall vacations also benefit from lower crowd levels, ideal weather for sightseeing, and fewer kids around, too, as they’re all back to school!  

So where should you go if you’re looking for a budget break?  

These are the 5 most affordable U.S. cities to visit this fall according to Airbnb:

Somers Point, NJ 

Somers Point is a fascinating destination located on Great Egg Harbor Bay and close to the ocean.  

This is a wonderful spot by the Jersey Shore where you can enjoy all kinds of seaside activities, such as paddling, fishing and crabbing.  

But it’s so much more than just a traditional seaside town. It is also a destination that is proud of its rich history and keen to share this with visitors.  

Somers Point is the oldest settlement in Atlantic County, having been settled by Europeans in 1693.

You can visit the Atlantic County Historical Society to find out more about this fascinating heritage.  

And if all that history leaves you feeling thirsty then visit the Somers Point Brewing Company.

This is a renowned local independent craft brewery offering both indoor and outdoor seating, so you can enjoy a brew whatever the weather!  

Myrtle Beach, SC  

Boasting a 60-mile stretch of clean, sandy beach, Myrtle Beach is best known as a coastal resort. 

But there’s so much more to attract travelers to Myrtle Beach and many attractions that are particularly enjoyable during the cooler days of fall.  

Take a ride on the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel, one of the tallest observation wheels in America.

This offers incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and the town.

A regular ticket with four revolutions of the wheel costs $19.99 per person.  

One of the attractions I think sounds most interesting are the Brookgreen Gardens.

This is the perfect place to relax and unwind, and if you visit on the weekend of October 5/6 then you can take part in the Harvest Home Weekend.  

Get lost in the hay maze, pick and decorate pumpkins, and embrace all things fall.  

Finally, if you’re a golf fan, then you’ll be interested to know that Myrtle Beach boasts a whopping 86 different golf courses.

So you’ll never be short of something to do!  

Norfolk, VA

Norfolk is a waterfront city in Virginia named after my home county of Norfolk in the UK!

It is a city with a rich history and so much to see and do.  

Visit the Chrysler Museum of Art which is famous for its glass art, but also has a huge collection of paintings and sculptures from both European and American artists.  

Explore the Nauticus Maritime Museum, which is home to Battleship Wisconsin, a huge and well-preserved example of a World War 2 Battleship. Adult entry tickets are priced at $17.95.  

If you’re traveling with kids, then they’ll enjoy exploring the Virginia Zoo, which sits along the river and is packed full of native and international animals.  

Finally, perhaps the most popular reason to visit Norfolk in the fall is for the fall foliage season.

Leaf peepers should aim to be in the city between October 10 and October 31, because this is when the spectacular fall colors will be at their peak.  

Panama City, FL

Fall is one of the best times of year to be in Florida.

The weather is perfect, and the crowd levels are low: the time is right, and the kids will be at school, but the snowbirds won’t have started descending on the region yet!  

Panama City is located in Northwest Florida (away from the Orlando mayhem), and it’s best known for its incredible fishing and fine dining in its beautiful waterfront restaurants.  

If you enjoy watersports, Panama City is the place to be. You can enjoy watersports here no matter the season.  

Kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, and kiteboarding are all popular here, and you can enjoy these activities year-round.

I love to paddleboard and fall is one of my favorite seasons to get my board on the water.  

Visit the Plaia Shop to hire all the equipment you need to get on the water.

Paddleboard rental starts from $50 a day, and surfboard rental starts from $35 per day, so it won’t have to break the bank to get out there and enjoy the sea.  

West Des Moines, IA  

Finally, the 5^th most affordable destination this fall is West Des Moines.

The main attractions for tourists to explore here are the historic buildings and beautiful hiking trails, and fall is arguably the best season for hiking.  

Des Moines is known as the Midwestern hub, and people travel from across the state to visit the city for shopping, entertainment, and cultural enrichment.

Take time to walk over the glass-bottomed pedestrianized bridge that connects the city to the Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens.

It’s an exhilarating experience!

Art enthusiasts will enjoy the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, while the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is the perfect spot for nature lovers and outdoorsy types.

It looks particularly beautiful as its colors change for fall.

Forget the household names! Fall is the season where hidden gems shine brightest, at least according to Alaska Airlines.

The popular carrier has blown the doors off with their latest report, revealing the top 3. U.S. small towns to explore this fall.

Many of us seek out iconic city adventures in such places as Chicago, New York, or San Francisco, but scattered around the country are delightful towns often overshadowed by the grandeur of America’s finest metropolises.

But in the wise words of Michael Scott, “Well, well, well, how the turntables”…

Alaska has seen a strong spike in bookings for places without the crowds and towering skyscrapers in favor of simple down-home fall splendor.

These are the top 3 U.S. hidden gems surging in popularity this fall:

Santa Rosa: Gateway To Wine Country & So Much More

Despite popular belief, Napa is not the only major wine town in California. In fact, it’s not even the biggest in the state.

Lodi may take the cake on that one, but it’s Santa Rosa that has made a name for itself in the wine world and also serves as a gateway into Napa, among other delightful towns nearby.

But let’s stick with Santa Rosa proper, an often overlooked city that’s suddenly been thrown into the spotlight this fall, especially with Alaska’s new flights from Vegas.

So, why visit Santa Rosa other than to go winery-hopping?

The city of 177,000 people is surrounded by beautiful landscapes you can’t help but want to explore.

Take Sonoma Coast State Park ($8 admission) for sample size, where epic coastal views reign supreme over all the ‘leaf peepers’ snapping photos like they’ve never seen a tree before.

Kidding, of course. But, truth be told, this is one of few State Parks this time of year where you’ll forget all about the colors of leaves in place of colors of wines and stunning aqua-blue views.

And don’t sleep on Santa Rosa’s food scene either; it goes way beyond wine!

Check out nearby Michelin-starred French Laundry – so good that California’s Governor Newsom couldn’t resist the urge against breaking his own 2020 lockdown mandates by attending a dinner party here.

If that’s not a selling point, then what is?

Bellingham: Springboard To Vancouver Or Relaxing Hideaway?

Which do you prefer: Picturesque lakes, numerous islands, and tranquil waterfalls or a buzzing cultural city, majestic mountains, and world-class cuisine?

Well, good news is you’re in the right place for both…sorta.

Just as Alaska Airlines described, Bellingham is a “hidden gem” nestled on the coast between Seattle and Vancouver, Canada.

Since Bellingham has its own airport, it makes for a relaxing fall escape on its own with astounding nature at your fingertips… or you can scooch across the border for a taste of the city life.

Any way you slice it, you’re in a great spot. You’ll find gorgeous coastal and inland views at such places like San Juan Island and Lake Padden, whichever suits your vibe, and ample ferry rides are provided to reach the various islands off Bellingham’s shores.

Not to mention a charming downtown filled with cozy cafes, scenic parks, and a booming arts scene.

Travel tip: Vancouver is roughly an hour’s drive by car or bus from Bellingham. Make sure to bring your passport and note that Global Entry is not accepted in Canada’s Nexus lanes.

Missoula: This Ain’t Yellowstone

Montana has been hyped up ever since the mega-hit TV show Yellowstone was released. But Missoula doesn’t convey the rootin’ tootin’ cowboy shootin’ image you may have emblazoned in your mind.

Missoula is where college town meets mountainous paradise – a place to bar-hop in the lively University District or relax along the Clark Fork River and dozens of scenic hiking trails.

For the more adventurous, there’s whitewater rafting to tap into your adrenaline rush or come late November, you can hit the slopes just 20 minutes from downtown.

Europe is like a magnet for Americans, especially in the summer months when, in some hot spots, it can feel like the American tourists outnumber the locals.  

And it’s easy to understand why. Europe crams so many cultures, cuisines, and historical attractions into a relatively small geographic space that it makes the perfect travelers’ playground.  

But travelers-in-the-know are avoiding the crowds and heat of Europe in the summer, and visiting during the winter months instead.  

The atmosphere is different, the vibe more relaxed, and, dare I say, tourists are welcomed more warmly, too.  

So where are they going? According to research by Allianz, these are the top 5 most popular European destinations for U.S. travelers this winter:  

5. Dublin, Ireland  

The popularity of Dublin as a winter vacation destination has exploded this year, jumping to 5^th most popular destination from last year’s position as 7th most popular.  

If you’ve always imagined getting cozy by the roaring fire of a traditional Irish pub, then winter is the perfect time to do it.  

And although the weather can be a little dreary, the longer nights and shorter days means that the nightlife in Dublin in the winter months is exceptional. For example, St Patrick’s Cathedral hosts live music and gigs throughout November, and the 3Olympia Theater dedicates itself to comedy in January.

If you’re looking for a little festive cheer then from October 24 ‘til January 5, Dublin Zoo will host its famous Wild Lights Nights.  

This is a spectacular display with illuminated installations that you can enjoy as you move between the enclosures of the zoo. Entry costs 24.50 euros ($26) per person.  

4. Rome, Italy  

The Eternal City is one of the most popular cities in Europe during the summer months, with local authorities even introducing a ticket system to visit the Trevi Fountain in a bid to control the crowds.  

But in the winter the crowds are gone and you can explore this living museum at your leisure. Temperatures are mild and you’ll find there are plenty of sunny days too.  

The culture, architecture, and cuisine that the city is famous for are just as enjoyable in the winter as in the summer – perhaps more so. But the winter months also have their own unique charm.  

Between December and February you can visit the Grinzing Village at Piazza Adriana and enjoy outdoor ice skating with a festive feel. There’s no need to pre book, you can just turn up!  

On January 5 and 6 the Romans celebrate the legend of Befana, the witch who brings gifts. This is a great time to be in the city as there’s a carnival and a parade of over 100 people dressed in period costume.  

3. Madrid, Spain 

Madrid is one of the best Spanish cities to visit in winter. Crisp with a chill in the air and clear blue skies you can top up your vitamin D and explore this fascinating hot spot.  

During November and December Madrid boasts Christmas markets, pop up ice skating rinks, and ornate nativity scenes.

Don’t miss the Christmas market in the Plaza Mayor, which has been attracting visitors since the 17th century.  

If you want to escape from cold or rain, head into the Prado Museum. One of the most fascinating galleries in Europe for art lovers, you can find pieces by Goya, Velázquez  , and El Greco here. From October 15 – February 6 there is a special exhibition dedicated to the work of Reubens. 

General admission costs 15 euros ($16) per person.  

2. Paris, France 

If you’re hoping to visit Paris without breaking the bank then winter is the best time to choose. Hotel prices drop considerably.

The weather is cold, and often wet, but the city is still charming and the crowd level is much lower too.  

From November onwards, the city is sprinkled with Christmas trees, lights, and decorations. On rainy days take the opportunity to explore the art in the Louvre or the Palace of Versailles. 

If you love to shop then visit in January for Les Soldes. My favorite time to be in Paris! Unlike in the U.S. or the UK when stores seem to have permanent sales, in France there are only 2 official sale periods. The first of these runs from Janaury 10 – February 6 and is a great time to bag a bargain!  

1. London, England 

It should come as no surprise that London is the most popular European destination for U.S. travelers this winter.

London was also the most popular European destination for U.S. travelers last winter!  

I’ve mentioned before that winter is my favorite time of year to visit London. The incredible light displays, festive atmosphere, and the chill in the air all create a wonderful experience. 

Some of the best things to do in London in winter include visiting the museums and galleries, wandering along the South Bank to see the lights, and for a taste of Christmas visit the Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. This opens from November 21 ‘til January 5 and entry tickets cost from £5 ($6) with additional charges for activities such as ice skating.  

For traditional Christmassy foods, take a walk to Borough Market. This is London’s oldest and largest food market, and although it does have a reputation for being overrun with tourists (especially in the summer) the quality of the food here is excellent.  

Like Dublin, London in winter is a great place to cozy up in a pub with a pint. Try the Grazing Goat in Marylebone or the The Anglesea Arms by Ravenscourt Park. This has an open panelling and roaring fire, creating an authentic British pub feel.

I know most of us would rather focus on history, attractions, or overall allure when choosing our next destination, but the truth of the matter is we just don’t have the luxury to do that.

As safety and public health have become increasingly uncertain, it’s time we start to prioritize the places on our bucket list that make us feel relaxed and at ease.

But how do you figure out which ones these are?

WalletHub just conducted a study on the safest and most dangerous cities to visit in the U.S., an analysis based on key indicators like assaults per capita, traffic fatalities, and even unemployment rates.

In the end, these 5 often-overlooked cities were crowned the safest in the nation (and luckily for us, they’re all pretty interesting to visit, too!).

5. Boise, Idaho

You might be surprised to hear that the Idaho capital just recently broke its all-time tourism record since it’s not really the first place to make it to every traveler’s bucket list, but as people look for quieter, safer, and more authentic hubs, Boise becomes such an obvious choice.

Not only is the violent crime rate here low, at ~2 incidents per 1000 residents, but that number has been consistently decreasing in the past four or five years.

Combine that with the fact that here (or at least a short drive away), you’ll find some shockingly stunning natural scenery highlighted by places like Shoshone Falls Park, Twin Falls, and the Perrine Memorial Bridge, and you get the perfect quiet retreat.

4. Burlington, Vermont

If you’re looking for a place with a bit more of a vibrant city scene that still fits into the “laid-back and safe” category, look no further than Vermont’s biggest city.

Burlington remains a bit of a hidden gem, but in my opinion, that makes it all the more interesting to visit, especially this time of year.

You can explore the charming downtown area and watch a sunset over Lake Champlain all while feeling like one of the locals.

3. Warwick, Rhode Island

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as Rhode Island is generally among the safest states in the country.

Warwick, as one of its quietest havens, is perfect for anyone traveling solo, with family, or who wants to escape the noise, chaos, and even danger of bigger cities.

What many don’t realize, though, is that this is actually a pretty incredible place to experience – between its gorgeous beaches, cultural landmarks, and adorable specialty shops, Warwick promises every traveler an experience they won’t forget.

2. Casper, Wyoming

I know that most people think of Casper as just a place you go to ski every once and again, but for those who don’t mind a more low-key getaway, it’s a fantastic place to experience year-round.

Sure, the nights here might be a bit quieter since the city is not exactly known for its thriving club scene or high-end restaurants, but you’ll get to spend your days taking in the most awe-inspiring views outdoors and exploring the quaint downtown shops and cafes – those traveling with family will have an extra amazing time.

1. South Burlington, Vermont

Vermont makes another appearance, this time with the big winner – South Burlington.

Famous for its pristine environment, excellent quality of life, and of course, stellar safety record, this small yet dreamy city is everything you wish for during those particularly stressful days.

You can spend your time here strolling through Red Rocks Park, relaxing with a good drink in one of the local bars, or, better yet, enjoying a full-on guided brewery tour.

Most Dangerous Cities To Visit In The U.S.

So, we now know which places promise us the greatest peace of mind while traveling, but are there any cities those of us who prioritize safety should avoid altogether?

While it’s hard to speak in absolute terms when it comes to topics like these, there were a couple of destinations that scored pretty poorly in the WalletHub survey, so if you were planning on visiting any of them it might be best to rethink your plans, or at the very least, take some extra safety measures:

5. Memphis, Tennessee
6. Detroit, Michigan
7. Fort Lauderdale, Florida
8. Baton Rouge, Louisiana
9. New Orleans, Louisiana

I’ve always loved scouring for the best deals when it comes to travel.

There’s something about exploring someplace new on a budget that not only keeps you feeling content and worry-free but also gives you the opportunity to see far, far more than you would otherwise.

That’s why when this study on the cheapest (and most expensive) U.S. destinations was released, I ran there looking for some ideas on that next great place to add to my bucket list – and that’s exactly what I found.

Of the top 100 travel destinations in the nation that were analyzed, these ones promised the best touristy allure – low price point balance:

Spots 6-10

Before we move on to the top 5 or the crème de la crème, as I like to call them, let’s quickly go through the places that were ranked sixth to tenth in the report; sure, they might not be the absolute cheapest, but they’re still gorgeous hubs that are very much worth a look:

10. Monument Valley, Utah
11. Bend, Oregon
12. Cape Cod, Massachusetts
13. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
14. Sedona City, Arizona

Now that that’s said, we can dive right into our No. 5 spot holder – Galtingurg, Tennessee.

5. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Don’t let Gatlinburg’s unassuming, small mountain town facade fool you – the Tennessee gem has been on almost every “Top Underrated Places To Visit In The U.S.” list this fall, and if this trend continues as is, you’ll soon be struggling to find a hotel to book.

That’s why for the best experience (and deals), I’d recommend coming here ASAP.

Sidney James Mountain Lodge has available rooms starting at just $58, the Smoky Mountain Harvest Festival is just around the corner, and the nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not only jaw-dropping this time of year, but free to enter, too!

4. Tybee Island, Georgia

If you feel like you’ve missed out on a relaxing beach getaway this summer, why not plan it now instead?

Located just a 30-minute drive from Savannah, this often-overlooked gem is actually the perfect place for those who want to go sunbathing, kayaking, paddleboarding, or even dolphin-watching (tickets start at just $27.95 per adult)! 

Here, you’ll also find plenty of cute little restaurants that serve mouth-watering food at unbeatable prices – I, for one, will always have a soft spot for Sundae Cafe. 

3. Helen, Georgia

This next one’s for all of you looking to experience a slice of Europe right here in the U.S., and most importantly, on a budget.

That’s exactly what you’ll find in Helen, a small Georgia town that was built to replicate a Bavarian alpine village and is, of course, home to one of the longest-running Oktoberfests in the country.

From now up until October 27th, the event will be running nightly, complete with traditional music, lively dances, indulgent food, and lots and lots of beer.

2. Outer Banks, North Carolina

Coming back to a more typical U.S. hub, the Outer Banks in North Carolina are what I’d describe as a slice of coastal heaven.

Here, you can spend your days strolling through Jockey’s Ridge State Park, exploring the Wright Brothers National Memorial, or going in the water to kayak, paddleboard, or even surf – the best part is equipment rentals are notably cheaper now that the summer rush’s over, so if there were ever a time to try your hand at something new, it’s definitely now!

1. Charleston, West Virginia

West Virginia is quickly establishing itself as one of the country’s trendiest hotspots, first by breaking its all-time tourism record and now by having its gorgeous capital nab the No. 1 spot as the best-value destination in all of the U.S. – no wonder so many people are coming here!

The great thing about Charleston is that there’s truly something here for everyone.

Outdoor lover? Coonskin Park and Kanawha State Forest are not only perfect for hiking, picnicking, and everything in between, but they’re also completely free to enter.

City tripper?

The Clay Center for the Arts and Science, the West Virginia State Museum, and the Capitol Market are all must-sees.

Foodie? Don’t miss out on the chance to try a pepperoni roll (my top recommendation would be Swiftwater Cafe).

Nothing makes the world feel smaller than an airplane.  

And every time a new nonstop international flight route is announced, exploring the world becomes a little bit easier.  

This is why it’s so exciting that United Airlines has announced the largest international expansion in its history.  

Next summer, United Airlines will fly to more destinations across the Atlantic than any other U.S. airline.

That means more than 760 flights a week to over 40 different destinations.  

And 5 of these flights will be brand new nonstop international routes that no other U.S. airline currently flies to.  

5 New International Routes From United Airlines  

The 5 new international routes from United Airlines will launch in May 2025.  

They will all depart from the United Airlines hub in Newark/New York (so this is particularly interesting news for New Yorkers).  

Those new routes will be to: Nuuk in Greenland, Palermo in Italy, Bilbao in Spain, Madeira Island in Portugal and Faro in Portugal.  

By their own metrics, these new flights will make United Airlines the largest airline in the world.  

Nuuk, Greenland 

Nuuk is the capital city of Greenland and United Airlines will fly to the city twice weekly from June 14 next year. 

Nuuk is the northernmost capital city in the world and is home to the midnight sun in the summertime.

This makes it a wonderfully unique place to visit in Europe in the summer and a contrast to the crowds and beaches of other European hot spots.  

The nonstop flight from Newark to Nuuk will be just over 4 hours long, making it a convenient and incredibly accessible journey.  

Price information for this flight route isn’t currently available.  

Palermo, Italy 

Palermo will be one of 5 destinations in Italy that United Airlines will fly to nonstop next summer.

But Palermo is the only one of these that is a United exclusive route at this point.  

This route will launch on May 21 and will be a 3 times weekly seasonal nonstop service.  

Palermo is the most popular destination in Sicily and will open up this iconic island to a whole new American audience. This new route will put Sicily’s rich history, luxurious beaches and stunning architecture at your fingertips.  

Return flights from June 20 to June 26 on this route are currently priced at $1,889 for the most restrictive, basic economy ticket.  

Bilbao, Spain 

Nonstop flights from Newark to Bilbao in Spain will launch on May 31 2024.  

A nonstop round trip flight from June 12 to June 18 on this route is currently priced at $1,027 for the most restrictive basis economy ticket.

The outbound flight has a flight time of 7 hours 30 minutes.  

Bilbao is the heart of Spain’s Basque country and an important cultural hub. One of my favorite attractions is the iconic Guggenheim Museum, and for watersports enthusiasts, the surf is epic here, too.

This isn’t the only exclusive United flight to Spain. United is also the only U.S. carrier to fly direct to Palma de Mallorca, Tenerife, and Malaga.  

Madeira Island, Portugal 

United will launch the only nonstop service from the U.S. to Madeira. This flight will start on June 7 and will operate 3 times a week.  

Madeira is a stunningly beautiful island. It boasts everything a nature lover could dream of: natural pools and waterfalls, incredible beaches, and lush verdant mountains.  

Price information for this route hasn’t been released yet.  

Faro, Portugal  

United will also be the only U.S. airline serving Faro in Portugal. This flight route will start on May 16 and will fly 4 times each week.  

This means that United will have the only nonstop routes to Faro, Madeira, Porto, and Ponta Delgada, making it the most wide-reaching U.S. airline for Portuguese flights.  

Flying from June 11 to June 17 on this route will cost $1,578 if you choose the cheapest and most restrictive fare.  

Faro is a beautiful city with a charming old town and easy access to pretty beaches, giving travelers the best of both worlds in one easily accessible package.

Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned traveler, you might be used to checking the U.S. Department of State for updates regarding the security situation in a number of countries:

It’s strange times we’re living in, after all, with all these geopolitical conflicts, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting some reassurance.

For Americans, this means checking their destination’s status on the State Department’s official website: if it’s Level 1 or 2, they’re good to go, though some caution is advise for the latter, if it’s Level 3, they should maybe reconsider traveling, and at Level 4…

Well, that’s the likes of Russia, North Korea and Iran for you.

This week, the entity updated its list, reissuing travel advice for 5 destinations, including 3 popular Caribbean getaways some Americans might have on their radar this winter, and we have good news for you:

Updates have been mostly positive. Let’s start with the Caribbean.

3 Caribbean Islands Placed At Level 1

Featuring at Level 1, the most desirable status any country can aim for, we now have Bermuda, a British island territory famous for its pink sands, picturesque capital Hamilton, featuring pastel-colored buildings and red telephone boxes, and luxury resorts.

According to the State Department, Americans visiting Bermuda this season should exercise ‘normal’ precautions, as levels of crime on the island aren’t significant, and the vast majority of vacationers have a hassle-free stay.

After Bermuda, U.S. authorities included an offbeat, yet incredibly-beautiful Grenada in their Level 1 advisory: an archipelago-nation comprising a mountainous main island and several satellite islets, it boasts a rich British-colonial heritage, with historic plantations and 18th-century forts galore.

Grenada is also highly sought-after for its unruffled golden sand beaches, that are nowhere as crowded as in other resort islands, and the fact safety risks are minimal makes it particularly appealing to U.S. guests.

That being said, the islands of Carriaocu and Petite Martinique are still recovering from Hurricane Beryl, as noted in the advisory, and some services may yet to be re-established.

Last but not least, there’s Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, yet another independent collective of islands distinguished by yacht-lined harbors, dramatic volcanic landscapes, especially in St. Vincent, the largest landmass, and paradisiacal isles that host private villas.

Be it lounging on a deserted Princess Margaret Beach, where the sands are powdered-sugar white, or sailing along a reef-fringed Bequia Island, this safe, mostly crime-free island is perfect for unwinding, with overnight stays in beachfront hotels starting at $220.

Similarly to Grenada, however, you should know the islands of Canouan, Mayreau, Palm Islands, and Union Island are still recovering from Hurricane Beryl.

One Of The Safest Destinations In The World Is Now At Level 2

Greenland is one of the safest destinations in the world, as an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark only 56,865 people call home, with low, to negligible crime, so you’d naturally expect it to be part of the Level 1 crowd.

That’s no longer the case, but not for the reason you may be thinking.

Greenland continues to be a low-risk adventure when personal integrity is concerned, but on the downside, its extreme weather conditions and limited emergency services may pose a problem to American visitors in need.

As the State Department reiterates, consular assistance in Greenland is extremely limited, and as the weather can be harsh, most notably in winter, and resources are scarce away from larger settlements like Nuuk, visitors should proceed with ‘increased’ caution.

In other words, as fun as those can be, don’t go snowmobiling or dog-sledding by yourself, as it can take search and rescue efforts several days to reach the site of an accident.

South Africa Remains At Level 2 Despite Rising Crime

To end this story on a good note, advice has been reissued for South Africa, a bucket list country for millions of travelers, and we’re glad to report it is officially considered moderately-risky to visit.

Though a lot has been said in the media about South Africa in recent years, following the significant spike in inter-communal violence and incessant power outages, Washington officials have refrained from issuing their feared Level 3, or even Level 4 alert.

It continues at Level 2, as per the November 7 review.

That’s not to say Americans should let their guard down when traveling in Africa’s southernmost state, with crime, civil unrest, and even kidnapping remaining major concerns––still, incidents involving foreigners do not occur at alarming rates so as to warrant more serious warnings.

The advisory reads that ‘violent crime is common and includes armed robbery, rape, carjacking, and mugging’, as well as ‘smash-and-grab attacks’ on private vehicles, so you should be vigilant at all times when traveling through urban areas.

Here are some safety tips for South Africa:

• Keep your valuables in a hotel safe, if you’re traveling with jewelry and/or luxury watches
• Do not use your phone in public (newer iPhones and other expensive models are most-targeted)
• Avoid joining demonstration and protesting crowds as these have the potential to turn violent
• Do not go to suburban areas unaccompanied
• Beware of existing racial tensions within certain communities
• If traveling inside South Africa, plan your route in advance and stick to the main highway (shortcuts are not advised as these may be controlled by militia)
• Roll up windows and lock doors when driving
• Avoid walking alone at night in poorly-lit, deserted areas

If you ever considered visiting a trendy El Salvador for its lush jungle, unspoiled Pacific beaches and vibrant capital city, but you’ve always been taken aback by how dangerous it is––was?––as a destination, we’ve got great news for you.

For the first time since records began, the U.S. State Department has added the Central American country to its list of moderately safe destinations, known among travel geeks as Level 2, on a par with Mexico, Belize, and Costa Rica.

In other words, El Salvador is no longer off-limits to U.S. citizens, and they can plan their trip knowing it’s now (far) less likely harm will come their way:

El Salvador Finally Gets Its Level 2 Status!

On November 8, 2025, the State Department downgraded El Salvador from Level 3 to Level 2, finally acknowledging the significant improvement in security across the country following months of pressure of deliberation.

Prior to 2022, El Salvador was known as one of the homicide capitals of Central America, with staggering levels of violent and petty crime plaguing a majority of its cities, especially San Salvador, the capital home to over half a million of the country’s 6.3 million inhabitants.

In only two years, however, it went from a crime hotspot to one of the region’s safe havens, largely due to the tough stance on organized crime taken by incumbent President Nayib Bukele: it’s not been without criticism, but it seems to be paying off.

In March 2022, Mr Bukele announced a ‘State of Exception’ across the territory that made incarcerating criminals and traffickers a lot easier––some would argue arbitrarily, with critics pointing out the due process was not always observed, but the numbers don’t lie:

El Salvador went from a shocking homicide rate of 105 per 100,000 people in 2015 to only 2.4 per 100,000 in the latest count: either the usual murderers have had a change of heart since, or they ended up in jail following Bukele’s mass incarceration program.

We’re banking on the latter.

How Safe Is El Salvador In Reality?

According to the Global Security Report, 88% of El Salvadorians feel their country is now safe to live in, helping it place number 8 on the overall chart, ahead of exceptionally-safe countries like Canada, Iceland, Finland and Japan, even.

That’s not to say El Salvador is safer than those countries: as we pointed out previously, a majority of El Salvadorians may feel their livelihoods have improved, thus contributing to a positive turnout, but a Swiss or Icelandic person is probably less likely to feel as safe in El Salvador.

It’s all a matter of perspective.

Regardless, the country’s success in tackling crime and becoming low-risk by Central American and Latin American standards is truly unprecedented, not to say mind-blowing.

This Is Why The U.S. Has Changed Its Position On El Salvador

The United States Department has 4 main categories to categorize countries when it comes to safety:

• Level 1: normal precautions must be taken
• Level 2: increased caution should be exercised
• Level 3: travel should be reconsidered
• Level 4: travel is strongly discouraged

In the years it battled the surge in crime, El Salvador was placed at Levels 3 and 4, at different periods of time, and even throughout 2023, when it had already become clear the security situation had changed, Washington refrained from revising its advisory.

The fact that it now features at Level 2 sends a strong signal to Americans their own Government recognizes the El Salvadorian administration’s effort in quashing crime, but feels confident they will continue upholding their promise to citizens and tourists alike.

They have noted ‘crime remains a concern in El Salvador‘, while adding ‘there has been a significant reduction in gang-related activity and associated crime in the last two years’, with a noticeable drop in violent crimes and murders.

The State Department mentions the ‘State of Exception’, which continues to be in place, citing the suspension of constitutional rights for prisoners, and the fact that several U.S. and foreign citizens are currently detained under ‘harsh’ conditions.

We do not know whether these individuals are involved with crime, though that is very likely, and again, as long as you have a clean record, and you’re not coming to El Salvador with malicious intent, you’ll be welcomed with open arms.
