After many years of delays, it’s finally happening, my friends.

No, not the Electronic Travel Authorization, the other (equally) bureaucratic hurdle facing travelers when landing in the European Union (EU) in the near future—and this includes Americans.

The 27-country-strong block is gearing up to launch its much-postponed Entry-Exit System, commonly shortened to EES, as early as this upcoming fall, and for those of you who are still in the dark about Europe’s new plans, you better get ready for some stricter screening.

EU member states will start fingerprinting and entering your private information into their database for immigration checks from October 2025, and this is how it’s going to play out:

What Is Even An EES?

In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past three years, the EU has been considering introducing an Entry-Exit System that will considerably tighten border controls, including fingerprinting all new arrivals.

This is not only to ensure the information on their passport matches their biometric data, but also to crack down on irregular migration, or even just overstayers.

As you might be aware, as a U.S. citizen, you can only be present in the border-free Schengen Zone, which comprises all 27 EU member states, plus Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland, for 90 days out of any 180-day period.

In other words, if you fly to Paris, France, on May 1, 2025, and you spend 7 days exploring the City of Love and other medieval gems nearby easily-accessible with the TGV train, you will then have 83 days left to travel around the Schengen territories until October 28.

This includes countries like Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece, and many more.

As of right now, the only way border officials have to know whether you’re within the 90/180-day rule is verifying entry and exit stamps manually.

You know where we’re going with this…

Once the EES launches, fingerprinting will make these checks way easier, as it will act as both a ‘check-in’, and ‘check-out’ device every time you cross an external European border, and any overstayers will be immediately flagged by the system.

And trust us when we say, if you don’t want to get a hefty fine, or worse, even banned from returning to the Old Continent, you should make sure you’re in compliance with the rules.

How Do We Know The EES Is Launching In October?

It seems that, following months of endless debates and back-and-forth, an agreement was reached by the EU’s Interior Ministers in Brussels last March.

In the words of the Polish Minister of the Interior, Tomasz Siemoniak, ‘October is our horizon‘ for the start date of the EES.

No official date has been set yet, but at least we have a month to work with now.

The one major roadblock is the various stages of preparedness seen across the EU: while some countries already have the technology in place and are ready to start the fingerprinting, others are nowhere near launching.

We have to remember that this will apply not only to passport, but all land and sea borders, and a number of European countries have multiple border checkpoints with non-EU, or non-Schengen states in the vicinity, that are not as well-equipped as an international airport.

For that reason, the European Commission is planning to be ‘flexible’, and allow for a phased introduction of the Entry-Exit System.

What Is The Path Ahead?

In short, European nations will have 2 options: either launch the system all at once, across all its checkpoints, or in a ‘phased manner’.

Those opting for the latter would kick off a 6-month transition period from October, and would be required to properly register 10% of incoming travelers after the first month.

For the first 60 days, they may also operate the EES without the biometric controls, i.e. the much-dreaded fingerprinting.

After 3 months, they must be ready to operate the system with all biometric functionalities, and they should finally be able to register ‘all people’ towards the end of the 6 months.

This will avoid any further delays, as it will enable European states to move at their own pace.

The wait is over, guys: get ready for some (more) border scrutiny by fall 2025.

How Will The EES Work?

If you’re wondering how exactly the EES will work, it’s simple:

You’re still required to bring a valid passport to the EU, and on top of that, it should remain valid for an additional 3 months beyond your intended date of departure.

Come October, however, once you scan your U.S. passport in an e-Gate, you will be instructed to provide your fingerprints and get photographed—this should take an additional 2-3 minutes for every traveler, and that’s considering they’re tech-savvy and don’t faff around, so beware there might be significant delays.

Once that’s done, you’re good to go, and you won’t have to do it a second time, or at least until your biometric data is stored in the EU database.

Based on what we’ve been informed previously, this might be a 2-year period if you’re not a frequent traveler, though that’s yet to be confirmed, and we’ll be sure to rectify this should it be necessary when the time comes.

As for the ETIAS, the new ‘digital visa’ applying to Americans and visa-exempt travelers, in general (or dare we say it, the other European boogeyman), you don’t have to worry about that until late 2026… at the earliest.

With its high-end resorts and exclusive fine dining experiences, the Caribbean might not be your first choice for a budget getaway.  

But according to a new report from Squaremouth, one Caribbean island is the cheapest spot for American travelers to choose if you’re looking for a budget fall getaway this year.  

I’m talking about the Bahamas, and I’m just as surprised as you are!  

The same study found that traveling this fall will cost 30% more than it did last year, making this the most expensive fall travel season to date.  

Wondering whether the Squaremouth research is right on the money? Here’s a breakdown of costs to visit the Bahamas to work out just how affordable it can be:  

Flying To The Bahamas  

There are 4 international airports in the Bahamas:

• Nassau
• George Town
• Freeport
• Marsh Harbor

They all offer direct flights from cities across the U.S. this fall.  

The cheapest airport to fly into is the Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. 

This is also the busiest airport in the Bahamas and is considered the most important airport in the Caribbean, so I will focus on this one when listing example prices.  

Getting to Nassau is a breeze, with direct flights from a whopping 10 U.S. airports this fall.  

These are:

• Miami
• New York
• Fort Lauderdale
• Orlando
• Tampa
• Atlanta
• Houston
• Boston
• Charlotte
• West Palm Beach

Flying from Miami to Nassau from October 15 to October 22 nonstop in an economy class seat will cost $245 flying with Bahamas Air.

Alternatively if you would prefer a U.S airline then for $265 you could choose American Airlines on the same dates.  

This flight route has an incredibly appealing flight time of just 1 hour.  

Alternatively you could fly from New York to Nassau. Flying from October 13 to October 19 nonstop will cost $258.

This is with Delta, and has a 3 hour 10 minute flight time.  

Staying In The Bahamas  

There are plenty of options for travelers on all kinds of budgets to visit the Bahamas, but the focus here will be on budget stays.  

And with 700 different Bahaman islands to choose from, narrowing down where exactly you want to stay should be your first job before you pick a hotel.  

Grand Bahama is the most northerly of the main islands, and has a reputation for being the most budget friendly. It boasts beautiful white sand beaches but with a less eye-watering price tag!  

On the Tripadvisor rating of the best 10 budget-friendly hotels in the Bahamas, 3 of the top options cost less than $200 per night for stays in October.

These are the: 

• Saint Francis Resort And Marina. This offers incredible views of the ocean and the harbor, and guests are particularly complimentary about the friendly and welcoming staff.  The Saint Francis Resort And Marina is considered the ‘best little resort’ in a Bahamas.

• Pelican Bay Hotel. Friendly staff,and a great location close to an abundance of great hotels, this is a small hotel that offers everything a budget traveler could need.  

• Sandyport Beach Resort. This is a beachfront resort that’s right by the ocean and in a bustling area, so suited to travelers keen to explore. You’re in walking distance of shops and restaurants, but the resort has everything you need if you don’t want to leave the pool!  

Things To Do In The Bahamas

One of the very best things to do in the Bahamas doesn’t have to cost a penny. Relaxing on perfect white sand beaches!

If you pack your snorkel and mask, then many beaches have shallow areas that are ideal for snorkeling.  

Pearl Island, just northwest of Nassau, is considered the best snorkeling location in the Bahamas.  

Provided you stick to public beaches or the beach attached to your hotel or resort, spending the day on the beach or snorkeling from the shore doesn’t have to cost you a single cent!  

If you prefer diving then the islands of New Providence, Grand Bahama, Andros and The Abacosall feature a host of world-renowned dive sites.  

If you fancy yourself an international man (or woman) of mystery then the James Bond Wrecks is one of the most famous dive sites in the Bahamas. Located off the coast of New Providence, you can book trips with the Reef Oasis Dive Club.

Dive packages start from $61 per person.  

Finally, the most popular and famous excursion that takes place in the Bahamas is a visit to see the swimming pigs.

You can arrange this with Exuma Water Tours, though I admit it’s more of a splurge than  a budget day out.  

A half-day pig swimming tour on a 36-foot power boat with reef snorkeling and blow hole swimming, as well as the chance to swim with the pigs, will cost $190 per person.

Somehow, in a world where we crave the latest gizmos and gadgets, the old world of the Mayans has been trending in recent years despite being here way before our time.

Their fascinating culture and architectural marvels caught my eye, too, as I had just visited some incredibly preserved Mayan ruins in Copan Ruinas, Honduras, myself.

While there haven’t been any official Mayan ruins discovered in the U.S., there are some fascinating historical ruins attributed to our own timelines that often go overlooked.

And what better backdrop while perusing remnants of our past than pristine white sand along vibrant emerald green waters?

Rather than follow the crowds to Miami, Orlando, and Siesta Key for your next Florida getaway, escape to the hidden paradise of Fort Pickens this fall.

Dare We Say A ‘Poor Man’s Tulum’?

Home to beautiful beaches and American antiquities, Fort Pickens is a rare sight to behold.

Often overshadowed by dozens of more popular Florida destinations, this sliver of paradise at the very western tip of Pensacola’s Santa Rosa Island goes relatively unnoticed unless you’re seeking it out.

In other words – it’s a bit off the beaten path, but not a treacherous journey and you’ll definitely be rewarded regardless.

Boasting Caribbean-esque white sands and shimmering green waters, Fort Pickens is well worth a visit in the same sense as Tulum, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and captivating historical sites.

No, there’s no trendy arts scene, a brand new airport, or divine Mexican food, but where else can you visit a nice U.S. beach with such well-preserved ruins?

Answer: not many!

Perhaps South Carolina’s Fort Sumter or another Florida counterpart, St. Augustine, but it’s safe to say Fort Pickens is next level!

It’s Okay To ‘Ruin’ Your Beach Vacation

Fort Pickens’ significance dates back well over a century.

Serving as a popular landmark nowadays, its former glory continues to captivate visitors with its scenic coastal views and intrigue.

What was once a stronghold in the American Civil War, the grounds are still kempt and most structures remain intact, making for awesome photo-ops.

Fort Pickens’ job was to protect Santa Rosa Island all while stopping the enemy from infiltrating the bay and nearby Navy yard.

The base covers roughly 200 acres, easily explorable before or after time at the beach. Today, it’s overseen by the National Park Service, who should ask for a raise covering double duty as both park rangers and tour guides.

Expect a walk-through of the remaining brick forts, a stroll along the barrier island, and even kayaking through the marsh.

It may not be Chichen Itza, but it’s very impressive nonetheless.

Unlike Gettysburg, don’t expect cheesy battlefield reenactments, even though The Battle of Santa Rosa Island took place here in 1861.

Fort Pickens receives high praise on Google, holding an impressive 4.8/5 rating, where one recent visitor claimed, “…the fort is incredible. Great beaches too, much better than the packed public beach just down the road”.

Also, many who visit love to rough it by camping under the stars. Fort Pickens Campground holds 200 campsites only charging $25 for admission in addition to the Gulf Islands National Seashore entry fees:

• $15 per person
• $20 per motorcycle
• $25 per vehicle 
• $45 annual pass

A Blissful Beach Escape Away From Florida’s Typical Crowds

No resorts, no wild nightlife, no Disney characters – just pure bliss along an authentic paradisal beach.

Okay, the resorts would maybe be a nice touch, but otherwise, we all love as much space as possible on our beach vacations.

Fall tends to see crowds shrink anyway, but Fort Pickens is never elbow-to-elbow like many coastal hotspots around the globe.

Here, you’ll find soft white sand and many areas without a footprint. And best of all the waters are clear and the weather is warm even in fall (think mid 70’s to 80’s)

Some Gulf beaches can become brown and murky, uninviting for a nice swim. That’s not the case here.

In all likelihood, you’ll be driving here from Pensacola.

Although, the Pensacola Bay City Ferry offers fun weekend rides.

If driving, you’ll want to input Langdon Beach as your destination since this is the most swimmable area, equipped with ample parking, restrooms, and beach showers.

Safety Tip: lifeguards are only on duty from May – September!

Fall is one of the very best seasons to travel if you’re not keen to part with your cash!  

According to new research from Airbnb, fall is the most affordable season to travel, and the price per night across its network is at its lowest in fall compared to the rest of the year.  

As an added bonus, fall vacations also benefit from lower crowd levels, ideal weather for sightseeing, and fewer kids around, too, as they’re all back to school!  

So where should you go if you’re looking for a budget break?  

These are the 5 most affordable U.S. cities to visit this fall according to Airbnb:

Somers Point, NJ 

Somers Point is a fascinating destination located on Great Egg Harbor Bay and close to the ocean.  

This is a wonderful spot by the Jersey Shore where you can enjoy all kinds of seaside activities, such as paddling, fishing and crabbing.  

But it’s so much more than just a traditional seaside town. It is also a destination that is proud of its rich history and keen to share this with visitors.  

Somers Point is the oldest settlement in Atlantic County, having been settled by Europeans in 1693.

You can visit the Atlantic County Historical Society to find out more about this fascinating heritage.  

And if all that history leaves you feeling thirsty then visit the Somers Point Brewing Company.

This is a renowned local independent craft brewery offering both indoor and outdoor seating, so you can enjoy a brew whatever the weather!  

Myrtle Beach, SC  

Boasting a 60-mile stretch of clean, sandy beach, Myrtle Beach is best known as a coastal resort. 

But there’s so much more to attract travelers to Myrtle Beach and many attractions that are particularly enjoyable during the cooler days of fall.  

Take a ride on the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel, one of the tallest observation wheels in America.

This offers incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and the town.

A regular ticket with four revolutions of the wheel costs $19.99 per person.  

One of the attractions I think sounds most interesting are the Brookgreen Gardens.

This is the perfect place to relax and unwind, and if you visit on the weekend of October 5/6 then you can take part in the Harvest Home Weekend.  

Get lost in the hay maze, pick and decorate pumpkins, and embrace all things fall.  

Finally, if you’re a golf fan, then you’ll be interested to know that Myrtle Beach boasts a whopping 86 different golf courses.

So you’ll never be short of something to do!  

Norfolk, VA

Norfolk is a waterfront city in Virginia named after my home county of Norfolk in the UK!

It is a city with a rich history and so much to see and do.  

Visit the Chrysler Museum of Art which is famous for its glass art, but also has a huge collection of paintings and sculptures from both European and American artists.  

Explore the Nauticus Maritime Museum, which is home to Battleship Wisconsin, a huge and well-preserved example of a World War 2 Battleship. Adult entry tickets are priced at $17.95.  

If you’re traveling with kids, then they’ll enjoy exploring the Virginia Zoo, which sits along the river and is packed full of native and international animals.  

Finally, perhaps the most popular reason to visit Norfolk in the fall is for the fall foliage season.

Leaf peepers should aim to be in the city between October 10 and October 31, because this is when the spectacular fall colors will be at their peak.  

Panama City, FL

Fall is one of the best times of year to be in Florida.

The weather is perfect, and the crowd levels are low: the time is right, and the kids will be at school, but the snowbirds won’t have started descending on the region yet!  

Panama City is located in Northwest Florida (away from the Orlando mayhem), and it’s best known for its incredible fishing and fine dining in its beautiful waterfront restaurants.  

If you enjoy watersports, Panama City is the place to be. You can enjoy watersports here no matter the season.  

Kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, and kiteboarding are all popular here, and you can enjoy these activities year-round.

I love to paddleboard and fall is one of my favorite seasons to get my board on the water.  

Visit the Plaia Shop to hire all the equipment you need to get on the water.

Paddleboard rental starts from $50 a day, and surfboard rental starts from $35 per day, so it won’t have to break the bank to get out there and enjoy the sea.  

West Des Moines, IA  

Finally, the 5^th most affordable destination this fall is West Des Moines.

The main attractions for tourists to explore here are the historic buildings and beautiful hiking trails, and fall is arguably the best season for hiking.  

Des Moines is known as the Midwestern hub, and people travel from across the state to visit the city for shopping, entertainment, and cultural enrichment.

Take time to walk over the glass-bottomed pedestrianized bridge that connects the city to the Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens.

It’s an exhilarating experience!

Art enthusiasts will enjoy the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, while the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is the perfect spot for nature lovers and outdoorsy types.

It looks particularly beautiful as its colors change for fall.

This last summer season saw a notable influx of tourists choosing to spend their holiday cruising along gorgeous coastlines. 

However, what some might have perceived as a seasonal trend is, in fact, an enduring phenomenon that shows no signs of going away any time soon.

On the flip side, say you were to book a flight from Miami to just one of the destinations the cruise covers.

In this case, let’s assume you’re going to the Bahamas since it’s one of the most popular destinations for American travelers.

The cheapest two-way ticket (per person) right now goes at $262.

Though airfare prices have dropped this shoulder season, remember that you’ll still have to account for lodging expenses for a one-week stay.

Once in the Bahamas, you’ll find that the average hotel will set you back $150 a night. While it is possible to find accommodation that costs less than $100 a night, the 7-night total will still trump the $529 you’d pay on a cruise.

Since our hypothetical vacation is one week long, let’s also account for food and drink expenses. 

Most cruises will charge an extra $200-$400 for unlimited drinks and food credit. Let’s assume a $300 average – that boils down to a $43 daily food budget, which is far cheaper than what you’d spend if you were to eat in cafes and restaurants close to your destination of choice.

When you combine the notable price difference with the ease and flexibility that cruises provide, it’s clear why so many travelers consider them to be the best bang for their buck.

Most travelers have just finished dealing with the logistics of their tropical beach getaways and are looking forward to an even more hectic winter season – when it comes to planning their fall vacation, there’s just not that much mental space left.

Despite popular belief, Napa is not the only major wine town in California. In fact, it’s not even the biggest in the state.

Lodi may take the cake on that one, but it’s Santa Rosa that has made a name for itself in the wine world and also serves as a gateway into Napa, among other delightful towns nearby.

But let’s stick with Santa Rosa proper, an often overlooked city that’s suddenly been thrown into the spotlight this fall, especially with Alaska’s new flights from Vegas.

So, why visit Santa Rosa other than to go winery-hopping?

The city of 177,000 people is surrounded by beautiful landscapes you can’t help but want to explore.

Take Sonoma Coast State Park ($8 admission) for sample size, where epic coastal views reign supreme over all the ‘leaf peepers’ snapping photos like they’ve never seen a tree before.

Kidding, of course. But, truth be told, this is one of few State Parks this time of year where you’ll forget all about the colors of leaves in place of colors of wines and stunning aqua-blue views.

And don’t sleep on Santa Rosa’s food scene either; it goes way beyond wine!

Check out nearby Michelin-starred French Laundry – so good that California’s Governor Newsom couldn’t resist the urge against breaking his own 2020 lockdown mandates by attending a dinner party here.

Bellingham: Springboard To Vancouver Or Relaxing Hideaway?

Which do you prefer: Picturesque lakes, numerous islands, and tranquil waterfalls or a buzzing cultural city, majestic mountains, and world-class cuisine?

Well, good news is you’re in the right place for both…sorta.

Just as Alaska Airlines described, Bellingham is a “hidden gem” nestled on the coast between Seattle and Vancouver, Canada.

Since Bellingham has its own airport, it makes for a relaxing fall escape on its own with astounding nature at your fingertips… or you can scooch across the border for a taste of the city life.

Any way you slice it, you’re in a great spot. You’ll find gorgeous coastal and inland views at such places like San Juan Island and Lake Padden, whichever suits your vibe, and ample ferry rides are provided to reach the various islands off Bellingham’s shores.

Not to mention a charming downtown filled with cozy cafes, scenic parks, and a booming arts scene.

Travel tip: Vancouver is roughly an hour’s drive by car or bus from Bellingham. Make sure to bring your passport and note that Global Entry is not accepted in Canada’s Nexus lanes.

Missoula: This Ain’t Yellowstone

Montana has been hyped up ever since the mega-hit TV show Yellowstone was released. But Missoula doesn’t convey the rootin’ tootin’ cowboy shootin’ image you may have emblazoned in your mind.

Missoula is where college town meets mountainous paradise – a place to bar-hop in the lively University District or relax along the Clark Fork River and dozens of scenic hiking trails.

For the more adventurous, there’s whitewater rafting to tap into your adrenaline rush or come late November, you can hit the slopes just 20 minutes from downtown.

They say there are two sides to every story, and in some cases, two sides to every town.

But this one is truly a unicorn!

No need for another California turf war.

With Tupac gone (or living his best island life) and the Kendrick-Drake beef subsided, let’s just say there’s no need for Tahoe to spark a North vs. South battle.

If anything, Outside Magazine has stoked the campfire, so to speak, claiming Tahoe’s North side is all the rage this fall, and they’re right!

While there’s certainly more to California than pristine beaches and bustling cities, many travelers are seeking out the best spots to ‘leaf-peep’.

For the West Coast, one of the best is surely Lake Tahoe. Already boasting dreamy blue waters, the allure increases tenfold back-splashed by the vast Sierra Nevada mountain range showcasing a kaleidoscope of colors September to winter.

North Lake Tahoe spans across both Nevada and California, and I bet you can guess which side beholds the ‘nude beach’!

While you’re free to show off whatcha mama gave ya, so is Lake Tahoe, as Mother Nature gifted this region with some astounding sites to explore.

There are 12 delightful towns dotted around this side, all offering their own unique flair. Many visitors love going for scenic hikes, with over 100 trails to choose from, or enjoying the pristine water by kayak or SUP.

Outside Magazine calls fall the ‘secret season’ for Tahoe; one key reason being how festive it becomes with fun events like a pair of different Oktoberfests and the Made in Tahoe Festival.
