If you’re over mainstream news (and who wouldn’t be by now?), then there’s one remarkable city that always seems to slip through the cracks as more than just a pass-through city.

Chances are, if you’ve ever taken a road trip on I-10, then you’ve passed through one of the Southwest’s top hidden gems, yet nearly 700,000 people call it home.

Largely ignored even by its own state, with locals commonly mislabelling it as “Mexico” and misinformed characterizations since it’s lined by “the wall”, fellow Texans and general travelers have long been missing out on the cultural delights and affordable luxury of El Paso.

Yes, El Paso – the one often portrayed as a run-down desert town and unsafe hub for illegal migrant crossings.

As a former resident, I can attest that, yes, there are occasional border issues, but one small sub-section of a city shouldn’t represent the masses when there’s astounding nature, prideful, friendly locals, and an ever-changing downtown district beginning to buzz again.

The Forgotten City Of Texas

Despite breaking tourism records in 2023, El Paso still flies well under the radar except when talking heads spew negative depictions of what’s actually an awesome city to visit.

Even if you haven’t brushed up on Rosetta Stone lessons lately, you can probably surmise El Paso translates to “The Pass” in English, and that’s largely how El Paso has been visited – just a stayover on to somewhere else.

But El Paso deserves to be your next weekend getaway, at the very least. If you enjoy phenomenal Mexican food ranging from classic hole-in-the-walls and cart vendors to high-end Michelin-worthy eateries, El Paso has you covered, and it exudes authenticity, unlike that other record-breaking Mexican-influenced city.

No offense, San Antonio, but El Paso’s food is unmatched, and one hike in the Franklin Mountains puts your “river” to shame.

Despite many Texans pretending the Lone Star State’s southwest tip doesn’t exist, popular Texas publication Texas Monthly had the huevos to recognize two El Paso restaurants with the best tacos in the state:

Of course, indulging in local cuisine is great way to experience any destination, this is only a tidbit of El Paso’s cultural delights.

Not Just Margs & Tacos: Discover Historic Neighborhoods & Important Landmarks

You’ll find every legitimate Mexican dish under the sun in El Paso, with a special emphasis on Southwestern and Chihuahua influence, given the close proximity to Ciudad Juarez.

Texan and Mexican history blend timelines, and there’s no better place to experience the best of both worlds than a plate served in El Paso, but to witness the history itself is another story, and you can do that too.

One overlooked gem, even for locals, is in the next town over, Socorro. Here, you’ll find the El Paso Mission Trail home to an immaculately preserved glimpse of the past, with stunning historic Missions playing a significant role in a former trade route spanning from Mexico City to Santa Fe.

In El Paso proper, the beauty of exploring the city’s historic neighborhoods is you never know what you’ll find.

Check out Sunset Heights, Manhattan Heights and my old stomping grounds, Segundo Barrio, for rows of streets oozing timeless charm and hidden gems like my favorite restaurant you’d otherwise never know about, Jalisco Cafe (only open on weekends).

Free Public Transit & Affordable Luxury

Downtown has continued to undergo a mass transformation since the pandemic’s ghost town vibes.

As WinterFest recently transformed downtown into a desert’s version of a winter wonderland, there are also many new bars, restaurants, cafes, and the city’s first-ever capsule hotel, breathing new life into formerly barren streets.

Getting around in El Paso’s splendid winter weather is easy, but if you plan to visit in the scorching summer, you may want to take advantage of the city’s free Streetcar connecting downtown to the high West Side.

Downtown is likely where you’ll want to make your base no matter the season. With a plethora of upscale hotels and rooftops with sweeping views, you’ll be shocked by how nice El Paso really can be – a far cry from its reputation as a bland desert town.

My favorite is The Plaza Pioneer Hotel (commonly referred to as “The Plaza”), recently awarded a Michelin Key and can be booked in the low $100s.

Bermuda no longer has to be primarily a cruise destination as Bermuda’s 2023 launch of BermudAir makes reaching this North Atlantic island a breeze from:

One of the aspects of travel that saddens me personally is how often Mexico is wrongly portrayed.

Mainstream news grips any negative event with a tight fist to paint a misinformed picture of one of the world’s most fascinating countries.

But the truth is that most of Mexico is safe; otherwise, millions of tourists wouldn’t return home unscathed with unforgettable vacation memories.

While beach destinations are incredible to visit, many of the country’s hotspots lack authentic culture, which is really a shame (apologies to Sammy Hagar).

Mexico City may be the mecca to indulge in an array of culinary masterpieces and witness some of the nation’s most captivating sites, but one historic city just a couple of hours away will rock your socks off.

Safe, cheap, and gleaming with incredible architecture and traditions, Puebla makes for a perfect escape to experience real Mexico, as even such places as Guadalajara and Oaxaca have become touristy.

One Of Mexico’s Top Cities For Affordability And Safety

No need to keep your head on a swivel wandering through Puebla’s wonders; the U.S. State Department confirms Puebla is very safe.

On par with many other popular destinations at Level 2, you can comfortably explore as you would just about anywhere.

That’s not to say there aren’t bad apples, but Puebla is a far cry from Mexico’s ‘dangerous’ reputation away from the safe havens of Cancun and Los Cabos per se.

Puebla’s historic city center makes for a great base, and there are some amazing values in both the luxurious and boutique hotels that dot the area.

Lined with colonial structures of Talavera tiles and meticulous detail, you’ll forget about Mexico’s glitzy resorts and become captivated by the city’s timeless atmosphere all while saving money!

Stay in luxury at Quinta Real Puebla this winter for great rates at $76 or perhaps a cozier feel at the Casa Rosa Gran Hotel for $42 this December.

If staying in the city center, it’s best navigated by walking so no stone goes unturned as there are numerous vibrant streets boasting lively bars, traditional eats, and artisan shops – none of which will break the bank either.

Plus, this city is a foodie’s paradise!

Should you venture beyond the city limits, Puebla does have Uber too, which is typically more affordable than taxis who can pull the classic “my meter is broken” tactic to obvious tourists.

Although, locals have been widely regarded as warm and very helpful to visitors.

Phenomenal Cuisine And Fascinating History

Across the U.S. there are world-class Mexican eateries and what you may not know is many cooks derive from Puebla bringing traditional flavors stateside.

Puebla is often regarded as ground zero for some of Mexico’s most renowned cuisine. In fact, famed chef and world traveler Anthony Bourdain visited Puebla on one of his first episodes to showcase the region’s distinct dishes, such as Mole Poblano, a must-try on your trip.

In other words, it’s impossible to go hungry in this city as every meal is a delight for your tastebuds (and don’t skip the cocktails either!).

Make sure to make a reservation at Mochomos Puebla for an unforgettable meal; it’s one of the top-rated restaurants in the city holding an impressive 4.9 rating Google with over 10,000 reviews.

Circling back to your travel budget, Puebla offers many free attractions like many outdoor celebrations and incredible cathedrals.

Being so eye-catching, you won’t be able to help yourself but enter one of the multitude of churches no matter your beliefs, simply to appreciate these architectural marvels.

Make sure you visit the Cathedral of Puebla, Santo Domingo Church, and La Compañía Church to name a few.

What may be even more fascinating for some is the nearby town of Cholula, but don’t get too excited thinking this place is home to the popular hot sauce brand.

Cholula’s claim to fame isn’t mouthwatering red peppers; it’s home to captivating ruins, including the world’s largest pyramid – take that Egypt!

Reaching Puebla Is Easy

Mexico City offers the most flight options directly from the U.S., but you can also fly nonstop from a couple of American cities (one being the ultimate travel hack).

Houston and San Diego (via Tijuana) are your only nonstop options at the moment. United flies nonstop from Houston, while both Viva Aerobus and Volaris fly from Tijuana which can be accessed by Southern Californians by never stepping foot across the border with the handy Cross Border Xpress.

If you fly into Mexico City, however, you’ll need to hop aboard a bus or take an expensive Uber or taxi.

According to Busbud, bus fares range from $6 – $23 this winter.

‘Leaf peepers’ may be in full force scoping out vibrant foliage across the continent, but before you know it, snow will soon transform those very same tree lines into vast winter wonderlands.

Colorado is one of the top places for such an excursion where the gorgeous Rockies are dotted with delightful towns perfect for a winter escape.

Airlines have surely taken notice, adding a handful of new flights to one underrated Colorado town with village-like streets and wondrous mountains as a picture-perfect backdrop.

While Aspen may be the household name of Colorado’s numerous small-town mountainous getaways, it’s time to set your sights on Vail this winter, as it’s easier to reach than ever before.

Alaska’s New Flight To Vail

Typically popular along the West Coast and Mexico, Alaska couldn’t help but dip their toes in Colorado’s frigid winter waters by adding Vail as one of their newest destinations.

However, the airline is no stranger to Colorado’s beauty, as it also flies to Denver, Aspen, and a boatload of hidden gems, such as Steamboat Springs.

In other words, adding Vail to the list is long overdue. So who are the lucky 2 cities that get to fly nonstop come December?

Well, in typical Alaska fashion, 2 of the West Coast’s best cities are the big winners. Those would be Seattle and San Diego.

Beginning December 20th, both Washingtonians and Southern Californians can get their winter splendor fix with direct flights to Vail.

Frontier’s New Flight To Vail

Say what you want about Frontier, but they have stood the test of time in the rapidly changing budget airline industry, and kudos to them.

Despite many of us feeling sorry for their PR team with bad press issued left and right in recent years, the proud low-cost carrier recently announced in tandem with fellow cheapo Spirit they are dropping cancelations and change fees on all flights to become more flyer-friendly.

The airline has announced multiple new flights in recent months, but Vail may stand out the most in their surprisingly impressive network for winter escapes.

Obviously, Frontier knows Colorado like the back of its headrests, which is based in Denver. But truth be told, it’s a good thing they’re adding Vail because a winter drive through the backroads from Denver is a tough trek!

The 2 lucky cities with direct routes to Eagle County Airport (EGE) are Dallas/Fort Worth and San Francisco.

Initial flights out of DFW will begin December 16th and a few days later out of SFO on December 19th. Both cities will operate flights twice per week for Frontier’s first-ever routes to Vail.

No Better Place To Hit The Slopes!

Since all new flights are slated for the week before Christmas, are you thinking what I’m thinking?

December is when Vail truly becomes a quintessential “winter wonderland”, almost is if you’re stuck inside a snowglobe you don’t want to escape.

The mountains gleam with fresh powdery snow, providing ideal conditions for skiers and snowboarders throughout the month and into the new year.

Better yet, unlike the movie that put Aspen on the map, you won’t be saying to yourself, ‘I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this’, with over 5,000 acres of skiable terrain to shred, bruh. 🤙

1. Culture

Guadalajara is often considered the cultural center of Mexico due to its rich history and artistic heritage. 

The city is home to several world-class museums, including the Regional Museum of Anthropology and History and the Instituto Cultural Cabañas. 

Visitors can immerse themselves in Mexican art, music, and dance at the many festivals and events held throughout the year, such as the Guadalajara International Film Festival. 

Being the home of tequila and mariachi, there are, of course, festivals dedicated to those as well. The Tequila Festival and the International Mariachi and Charrería Festival take place in March and September, respectively. 

While tequila and mariachi need no introduction, charrería, Mexico’s national sport, is most commonly compared to a rodeo and something not to miss on a trip to Guadalajara.

2. Cuisine

Mexican cuisine is known for its bold flavors, and each state has its own unique dishes. 

Guadalajara is famous for its birria — a spicy meat stew (usually goat) that is typically served with tortillas and lime wedges. 

Another local specialty is the torta ahogada, or “drowned sandwich.”  This is exactly what it sounds like – a fried pork sandwich smothered in a spicy tomato sauce and served with avocado, onions, and radish.

3. History

Guadalajara is home to some of Mexico’s most stunning architecture, with buildings that date back to the 16^th century. 

The historic center of Guadalajara, or Centro Historico, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features beautiful colonial-era buildings, such as the Government Palace and the Guadalajara Cathedral. 

The cathedral is almost as old as the city itself and includes Gothic, baroque, and neoclassical influences. 

Visitors can also explore the neighborhood of Tlaquepaque, known for its colorful buildings and traditional crafts, or venture an hour outside of the city to view the ancient Guachimontones Pyramids. 

4. Entertainment

Guadalajara has a vibrant nightlife scene with a variety of bars, nightclubs, and live music venues. 

Visit the Tlaquepaque neighborhood for mariachi or head to the popular Chapultepec neighborhood for more trendy hotspots. 

The city is also home to the most LGBTQ bars and nightclubs in Mexico and is known for hosting Latin America’s largest gay pride parade.

5. Day Trips

Guadalajara’s location makes it an ideal base for exploring nearby attractions. 

One of the most popular day trips from Guadalajara is to the town of Tequila to visit the sprawling agave fields and learn about tequila production. 

These blue agave fields, which are yet another UNESCO World Heritage Site, are the source of all the tequila in the world. 

Travelers can visit the National Museum of Tequila, tour distilleries, and visit the original tequila factory, the Hacienda Herradura San Jose Refugio. 

There is even a train, aptly named the Jose Cuervo Express, to take you from Guadalajara to Tequila. 

Another nearby option for either a day trip or a relaxing weekend is Lake Chapala. 

An hour’s drive takes visitors to this freshwater lake where they can bird-watch, enjoy the calm surroundings, or hire a boat to go island-hopping.

How is it possible nearly 12 million people visit a place you’ve likely never heard of each year?

The same way we all have our beloved secret getaways close to home, the same goes for Asia.

Travelers have been enjoying idyllic escapes to South Korea’s lesser-known paradise for years.

Seoul is always abuzz and thrilling to visit, but Jeju Island invites travelers to experience Korea’s charm in a more peaceful atmosphere highlighted by epic eats and otherworldly nature.

According to local publication, JoongAng Daily, more travelers have been trickling in this year and now it’s ready for the world stage.

Despite being mostly unknown to Western travelers, Jeju isn’t a far-flung remote island unequipped for a spike in tourism; there are ritzy name-brand hotels and centuries of astounding culture waiting for you.

Jeju Island: Closer Than You Think

How many cool places across the world would you be willing to sit through layover after layover to reach?

Being such a drag and energy zapper, that’s a promise I’ve made to myself not to do anymore unless it’s truly unique.

Jeju might be an exception, but the good news is that you can easily reach this 2 million-year-old island with a single connection.

With so many nonstop flights to Seoul, Taipei, and numerous Chinese cities, Jeju is a lot closer and easier to reach than you might think.

This volcanic wonder is set south of South Korea’s mainland in the Korea Strait alone, unlike other Asian countries with paradisal blips dotting the map.

Winter makes for a great time to visit with ideal weather for exploring the island. Agoda notes ‘crisp air’ and ‘minimal rainfall’ perfect for scenic hikes , especially with free entry to place like Hallasan National Park.

Jeju’s Otherworldly Nature & Postcard Villages

When we hear the word ‘island’, we automatically think of pristine beaches. In Jeju’s case, there’s far more to discover.

Take Jeongbang Falls, for example, the only waterfall to crash into the sea; an absolute must on your trip!

Then there’s Seongsan Ilchulbong, a UNESCO-protected site that’s an excellent stop for sunsets and to take in the island’s past volcanic past visit a huge crater than only be described as other-planetary.

Of course, this island has its fair share of incredible beaches to visit, such as Hamdeok, Hyeopjae, and Yongmeori, rounding out TripAdvisor’s top suggestions, but exploring other natural attractions is what will truly captivate you.

The island is teeming with scenic waterfalls, but the most amazing otherworldly experience may be paying a visit to Manjanggul Lava Tube, one of the longest naturally formed lava tubes on Earth.

When visiting Korea, you may not think of such an astounding nature. It’s likely that the food, culture, and bright lights of Seoul come to mind.

But don’t sleep on Jeju’s postcard villages, which make for a great alternative to Seoul’s popular Hanok Village since the new implementation of curfews and fines to combat overtourism concerns next spring.

Jeju Folk Village is a restored village from the 1800s, displaying more than 100 structures and historical remnants.

Seongeup Folk Village is another worthy photo-op where locals have been calling this place home continuously for over 600 years – and don’t skip the Green Tea Cave nearby!

Kimchi, BBQ & Incredible Seafood: Add Some Spice To Your Life In Jeju!

Surely, you’ve realized Chinese takeout and cheap supermarket sushi aren’t the only Asian delights back home.

The U.S. has seen an explosion of Korean restaurants largely highlighted by Korean BBQ garnished by Korea’s spice of life, kimchi, a spicy staple made of fermented vegetables and chilis (and very healthy!).

In Jeju, you can have the real deal at various markets, street vendors, and top-rated restaurants, much of which you’ll find in Jeju City, the island’s largest population.

For better or worse, Paris is having quite a year. First, the French icon was dethroned by Istanbul as the most visited city in the world, and now they have fallen out of the top 3 entirely.

Followed by the looming Olympics as the City of Light lays down their welcome mats to the world playing host to this magnificent global event Jul 26, 2024 – Aug 11, 2024.

However, early reports are showing mixed reviews of Paris during this period.

Air France, expecting a gargantuan loss of $193 million, was quoted as saying, “International markets show a significant avoidance of Paris.”.

Taking a page out of Southwest Airline’s playbook, tourists are saying they ‘wanna get away’…or stay away for that matter.

Good news is you can, and very cheap at that. One of the main concerns tourists have visiting Paris during the Olympics is the all but guaranteed surge in pricing.

Fortunately, that doesn’t impact trains outta town, but there’s also great deals extending through fall.

Travel to these 4 underrated destinations from Paris under $30 by train:

Ditch France Entirely! Take A Short Ride To Luxembourg ($27)

Luxembourg is undeniably one of the most expensive destinations in all of Europe and also insanely beautiful.

Don’t let your travel budget deter you from visiting one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, however.

Although pricey for hotels and dining, Luxembourg is worth a splurge for a day-trip or weekend getaway and it’s more than meets the eye with small towns like Echternach, known as “Little Switzerland”.

Everybody likes free stuff, and when it comes to traveling, we all appreciate freebies even more.

Luxembourg offers free transit throughout their small nation and you don’t even need a ticket! Just hop on!

In this case, you would be arriving by train via SNCF Connect, so all you have to purchase is your ticket from Paris (Gare de l’Est) into Luxembourg, totaling 2 hours, 43 minutes after a brief stop in Metz.

Those looking to escape the crowds watching Lebron James light up the scoreboard will have to fork over anywhere from $50 – $100 during the Olympics, but can score $27 tickets various dates Sep – Oct.

Au Revoir, Nice! Hit Up The Northern Coastal Town Of Le Havre ($23)

Paris, Lyon, Nice, Cannes…none of these household names are Le Havre. You may have never heard of it and that’s okay.

The road less traveled, or in this case, the rail, is one of the best ways to explore the world.

Those looking to check out more of France and want to stay close to Paris should check out Le Havre, which is just a 2-hour and 18-minute nonstop journey.

According to Rail Europe, tickets are $27 during the Olympics and $23 in October – the perfect escape for a day trip away from crowds, especially since trains run throughout the day.

Visitors may find Le Havre is a bit quirky, but aren’t we all?

This artsy port city, blending modern architecture and well-preserved structures surviving World War II bombings, has earned itself UNESCO recognition.

Easy to explore with the city’s grid-like layout, Le Havre is full of surprises, from savory beachside seafood restaurants to eye-popping art installations.

If there’s one thing not to miss out on it’s the remarkable Saint Joseph’s Church, a feast for the eyes.

Toast To New Adventures: Visit France’s Champagne Capital ($14)

Reims is a city steeped in history, but its claim to fame is being France’s champagne capital.

We’ll toast to that!

Boasting phenomenal attractions ranging from historic to indulgent, you can visit such sites as the Gothic-style Reims Cathedral to the beautiful Abbey of Saint-Remi, both protected by UNESCO.

Of course, you can’t visit the ‘champagne capital’ without sipping some bubbly.

A Grand Tour Through Tours ($11)

Tours, France is a hidden gem in the Loire Valley and just a stone’s throw from Paris in terms of train travel.

The city is quaint, easily navigable, and underappreciated for authentic French cuisine, but the real draws are the world-class chateaux and wineries outside the city limits.

Explore more of Loire Valley and visit stunning castles like Chambord, Chenonceau, Villandry, and Amboise, each with its own unique style and backstory.

But first, you have to get to Tours. Doing so is easy aboard the direct SNCF Connect route from Paris Montparnasse station, reaching Tours in as little as 51 minutes.

Tickets are as low as $17 July 29th during the Olympics and as low as $11 September – November.
